Now something more traditional like THAT is what I like. Well done!

Here's a much more simpler look. This one is quickly becoming my personal favorite. The skull and cross hammers gives the "Crew" a whole new and different direction.

lol Not bad, aside from being a near-direct copy of the LA Galaxy logo. ;)

I dunno about just the skull - dunno if it really fits into the Crew "theme".

Agreed on all points. The only slight exception is the Crew "theme". If you consider the Crew theme to be what RW made our playoff chances into, it's dead on balls accurate.

I guess it depends on how we want the logo to be perceived.

Do we want something hip and modern? Do we want something unique? Do we want something regal-esque that harkens to something like the EPL logos?

Personally, I'd go the route of class and traditional like an EPL logo (Man City, Cardiff City, Norwich, etc).

When I look at that, that's the kind of thing I think of when I think of a traditional crest.

Mr. Tan has no place in this conversation.

What is with the skulls? When did we become hard working pirates?
While I can program computers I am absolute crap with any picture program. I have always liked the Flag Lady's Crew Nation Flag. http://www.flagladyusa.com/columbus-crew-nation-burgee.html#.Usq48fRDt8E
What about soccer ball surrounded by a black C which is surrounded by a yellow C?
It might look too much like Colorado C in the flag.

I am just pissed he never made good on his promise of taking photos dressed up as a Crew Pirate with his foot on a chest holding the SS, MLS Cup trophy and the Eastern Conference trophy. He said that if we won MLS cup, he would do it. It would have been epic beyond belief.

    Design discussion/exercise...

I've been to Columbus a few times but I'm not a native. I've read Wikipedia entries about the history of Columbus. Given that Precourt is going to keep the name "Crew" and not change colors, I wonder what there is about Columbus and the area that is something that can be represented in a new crest/badge/logo that goes away from the "hard working, blue collar" mantra in the current one, if that's what is desired by PSV.
    • Even though named after Christopher Columbus and the Santa Maria replica being there, I and probably many outside of there don't necessarily think of that when they think of Columbus, Ohio nor associate it with the Crew.
    • State Capitol, but there are 49 other state capitols.
    • Civil War - name taken by NHL team
    • Buckeye - let's not go there :)
    • Downtown skyline - not notable outside Cbus (although nice)
    • German influence, but so does Cincinnati and lots of other places
    • no soccer balls in logo
Most of the other MLS logos/names have something most people think of that represents their area -- Colorado (mountains), Houston (Dynamo/energy), LA (Galaxy/"stars"), Dallas (steers/cattle), Seattle (Space Needle), Portland (axe, timber industry), Vancouver (stylized whitecap mountains), Chicago (fire dept. emblem), and so on.

To me at this time, any new badge with the name and colors intact -- without any reference to hardhats or workers -- would almost have to be something relatively generic, a la Bayern Munich, BVB or actually quite a few Bundesliga-style crests.

I'm not saying it has to have meaning outside Columbus, but considering PSV is not from there I don't see it being something like what I've seen so far. But I love seeing the concepts. :)

I think the emphasis on this not being a blue collar town is missed by anyone who has never been to the south side or the west side, and seen all of the manufacturing and transportation in this town. What makes Cbus what it is is not any one thing, but the dichotomy of the different groups here. We have a large glbt population, a vibrant arts scene, and also a large population of people from a more rural upbringing who work in those manufacturing type of jobs, as well as a large immigrant population from multiple sources. While not exactly a cultural melting pot like NYC, we certainly have a hard time defining Columbus as just any one thing, and that makes things even more difficult to encapsulate. Can we have a construction sign as our badge? ;-)

Youre right eboe, if the crest doesn't feature a mustached hipster drinking a craft beer, I'm out.

The crest should also feature a person complaining about their taxes or something. Maybe a picture of a voter voting down the first couple stadium initiatives. Or a picture of whoever that guy is who is trying to kill the Blue Jackets and the entire Arena District so he can pay 0.002% less taxes.

The guy trying to kill the annual payments to Nationwide Arena is Jonathan Beard. He's a writer (and I think editor) with the Columbus Free Press. He's a lefty and opposed to corporate welfare. He doesn't want his taxes cut he wants public money spent differently on things like low income housing. So don't confuse him with a Tea Party type who wants lower tax rates.
