Originally I was against it but after taking the survey I think we should change our logo. It's really special that we have an original logo, but I will support this team regardless of how our logo looks. I doubt the colors are changing. What are we going to switch to, red? Our stadium is already yellow. It's all about the attitude that accompanies change, and I think we're due for a mentality boost.
What Columbus is right now? Here is one idea for our crest then. The crest shows a CREW of nurses in Victoria's Secret Lingerie, in a Ohio Health Hospital, giving patients Cardinal Health drugs which were developed by a joint OSU and Batelle venture. In the background a Nationwide insurance agent is filling out a report from the accident one of the patients had in his Honda car. The agent is holding a check issued by Chase Bank. Or a CREW of drunk people wearing OSU gear on a crisp autumn Saturday. Could that all be done in black and yellow?
Though done with hyperbolic aplomb, I think you got it essentially correct. Columbus isn't (and hasn't really ever been) an industrial, blue collar town. I don't think the crest ever really fit with the city. All of those companies you mention above are either Columbus-based or have a significant presence here. With the exception of Honda, none of them are anywhere near industrial. If any of those companies were considering making a significant investment in the team (ownership or stadium naming) I could see them wanting some changes in branding taht would better fit with their company. I am not sure what that would look like, but you can never tell when the marketing talking heads get busy. I wouldn't cry if the crest changed - as long as it didn't suck (again marketing talking heads can do stupid stuff). I would cry a bit if the name changed. I would be really upset if the colors changed. I basically said as much in my survey response. Though I did say that the three words I most currently associate with the Crew right now are: 1) Massive (in the ironic sense - read Sirk's column); 2) Mediocre; 3) Cheap. I don;t think I am going to get picked for any focus group either.
Couple the logo with the Crew's "hardest working" theme for years and years which reeks of class warfare, of which I had enough with the election. What- blue collar workers work harder than white collar ones? I took the survey and told them I could care less if the hardhat logo changed but would fight tooth and nail if they changed the name or colors.
Exactly. This is a white collar town. Nowhere in your description above did you mention a construction worker, or steel mill worker, auto industry worker, or anyone else who wears a hardhat. Your examples are of people who have college degrees. Swellster beat me to it.
It seems that every utility worker or road "Crew" member around here wears those same helmets. Is it not part of the Columbus experience to expect perpetual roadwork? I am a little disappointed that I've never seen a Crew logo sticker on any of their helmets though. Maybe we could trade the logo to the Portland Timbers for something? If you dislike our crest what difference would it make?
OSHA-approved Crew hard hats. Yellow with a Crew logo on either side and a "BE MASSIVE" either across the forehead or the back. It needs to happen.
You forgot that the accident was caused by the driver eating a Wendy's burger in one hand and a White Castle slider in the other.
and how many of these have stepped up and invested in a major league way into this major league soccer team?
That is whole point of all this speculation about the survey. What if they are now and have a rebranding contingency? This is all pure speculation and the survey is probably just some intern's marketing class project.
I bet you people around the world know more about Columbus because of those three construction workers than they do for any other reason.
Well, yeah--except for the fact that *last* year's survey brought changes in regard to the questions asked--such as the elimination of the Crewzers (and possibly Crew Ambassadors).
I apologize if you weren't serious, but surely Jack Nicklaus, OSU, and Ohio's status as the center of the political universe every 4 years are a lot more well known abroad than the Crew.
Not exactly. I was in Cairo many years ago (well over 20 years ago, as it was before I met Mrs. KG) with a group. We were staying in the finest quarter star hotel in downtown Cairo. My roomie went down to get us some coffee and came back all excited. He'd run into a sheik at the coffee bar in robes etc. and struck up a conversation. He was just about to complement the guy on his excellent English when the sheik said "You know, I went to Ohio State. How are the Buckeyes doing this year?" As most of you know, I'm not exactly a tOSU booster. But the facts are the facts. I'd also note that folks in Europe know the Jackets too. I'm sitting in the "bar" of a Gasthof last year in a teeny town up in the northern Black Forest in the middle of nowhere (the only reason I was there was because my great-something grandfather was from that town), watching Schalke play in the CL (or EL, I forget which) with the father of the owner and a couple of guys who were on a bike hike. The one guy sees my Crew polo and asks about where I'm from--I told him Columbus, to which the reply was "ahhh Reeek Nash". We then had a pretty good talk about the NHL during halftime. This was all in German, mind you. Oh, and they *all* know about Jesse Owens in Germany. Much more than Jack.
Yet, they no longer use the inflatables and they've got the interns ('scuze me...Crew Action Team) passing out the game day fliers and whatever else. All they could have said was "We need our interns to do more on game day." In order to maintain relevance to the thread, I sense there's more to this than you're not telling, but what the heck is a sheik doing in a quarter-star hotel?
BUZZ. sorry wrong answer. the question was specifically the Crew vs OSU vs Jack Nicklaus. Only joking, I get your point, I forget that OSU as a educational institution would probably have a lot of alum around the world.
True story from Brazil. Two people were in line waiting. One of them was wearing an OSU shirt. Someone else (originally from Cleveland) saw the logo, started a conversation and told them to get in the much shorter line for seniors. So yeah, OSU does have alums and others all over the world.
