Just got a new Crew fan survey from the organization. They were asking about the Crew brand and there were a number of questions about what you associate the Crew with and what you associate Columbus with and where they intersect. There were also a number of questions about the logo, which makes me think they may be considering some kind of re-branding. There were not many questions about the name--but were questions about what it means, as a fan, to be "Massive".
It's an "in-joke" started by a fan of the team at a time when the team was playing like crap that the FO took and adopted for their own use. Nothing more.
Massive Columbus FC 1996. Black and gold hoops on the kits. The crest won't be more than a yellow "96" on a shield with two yellow flames on either side symbolizing Lamar and Kirk. (Think Dortmund meets Liverpool.)
Aren't you forgetting a third for Fitz? I'm going to put in my survey with a specific caveat that if a re-branding is in store that the re-branding would NOT include the word MASSIVE. What could it be if we did? FC-Bus Sporting Cowlumbus Redneck United Bleh! I'm not a huge fan of the crest, but my faith in the traditions of our brain trust make the thought of any changes to it scare the shit out of me.
I don't have any strong feelings either way about the crest. I don't mind if they kept it but I wouldn't revolt if they changed it. It may say something that I don't really care after being a fan since 96. I really want to keep the black and gold colors becuase people actaully know who the team is in the bright yellow kits.
I enjoyed filling out that survey. I came up with 9 reasons why the organization is not currently massive. Probably should have aimed for 25.

Meh, whatever. My connection is with the team not the logo on the jersey. Even if they keep the name Columbus Crew I'm fine with that. No need to get all butt hurt about a logo
Agreed and there is no way that they go thru with a color change. It was cost a ton to remove all the yellow around the stadium.
I largely agree. I don't really care about the crest so much. I'd rather they not change the name, and I like the tradition we've got going of the yellow unis (whether or not they still consider their colors "black" and "gold").
Name - We have to keep the Crew name. If they wan to be called the Ohio Crew, maybe. If we become a bunch of sailors on Christopher Columbus's crew and known as the Explorers, not so much. But will be annoyed if we chase the world with the FC, SC, United, Racing (Racing Crew we could have sculling too), City, blah, blah, blah crap. Crest - Could us a freshening. I think the crest gets hard to replicate the look as it get smaller. You lose the detail that is needed. Scarves especially look very odd. Colors - Black, and Gold (cough yellow) have to be maintained. They are the most distinctive in the MLS (except mabye Seattle). If they want to go to a light gray blue as a third color, I might be okay with it.
