The World Cup began earlier this month for the CONCACAF region as preliminary matches began across the region.

The match-ups for the region in the preliminary rounds are as follows:

    Bermuda v Cayman Islands
Belize v St. Kitts & Nevis
    Nicaragua v Netherlands Antilles
    Dominica v Barados
    El Salvador v Anguila
Turks and Caicos Islands v St. Lucia
    Aruba v Antigua and Barbuda
    Grenada v US Virgin Islands
    Montserrat v Suriname
    Bahamas v British Virgin Islands
    Puerto Rico v Dominican Republic

    Scores are here.

Former Houston Dynamo Ronald Cerritos is in 2nd for goals in the tournament with 3 goals, while his fellow Salvadorian Rudis Corrales leads with 5!

Of interest to US fans is the Dominica v Barbados match, since we play the winner for our first game. Our Mexican friends will want to keep an eye on the Belize v St. Kitts & Nevis match as their first opponent will come from there.

For those who don't understand how the qualification works, here is a great post that explains it all.

For the official PDF from FIFA, here that is.

By the way, kudos to El Salvador for opening a few eyebrows by defeating Anguila 12-0!!

Oh please, the Island of Anguilla has 12,000 inhabitants at most, and I assure you that soccer is not their top sport. maybe surfing or something.
I saw part of that game, and there should be like a mercy rule or something like that. the Salvadoreans looked like they didn't want to score anymore, but they just kept getting the ball.

Is there another region that is more lopsided from top to bottom then CONCACAF? Oceania maybe?

I think San Marino and Monaco would probably tell you that UEFA is pretty lopsided from top to bottom.

Maybe, but at least there is a nice middle class that moves up and down quite a bit. Canada is doing well. Honduras could be a good team. CR has been so-so. Jamaica eh....

Group B is probably going to be a killer, though, assuming everyone advances.

Fair point. I'd bet there are more games in CONCACAF between lopsided teams then there are in UEFA though. Every group has its minnows. But it just seems like US and Mexico are all but assured of victories against small Carribean islands.

Naranja is right though, there's usually a pretty good battle between T & T, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Honduras..Canada even.

Oceania maybe but only from middle to bottom. There is no top especially now that Australia has left.

Oceania is done with their first round, BTW. Fiji moved into Round 2 with a +24 goal difference after the four games of Round 1. Vanuatu qualified after going +20 in their four games and New Caledonia was the final team to advance with only a +5 while compiling a 3-0-1 record in the first round. Solomon Islands had a +20 goal difference but were knocked out of the competition.

Once again, Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu were rolling up double figure wins in qualifying. That's not Australia or New Zealand scoring at will, those are the 131st(Fiji), 122nd (Solomon Islands) ,and 139th (Vanuatu) ranked teams.

Anyway, the final round of Oceania qualifying is under way with New Zealand already out in front at the halfway mark with 9 points in three games and a +6 goal difference.

Depending on how lucky they are, Canada could be looking at their 1st World Cup. It's not impossible, just very very difficult. They got a tough group and if they get out of that group, it shouldn't be too hard to secure a 3rd or 4th spot to get a WC spot or playoff spot.

The Hex could be US, T&T, Mexico, Canada, CR, ES/Panama.

Not too hard to grab that 3rd/4th spot if they make it that far.

Don't forget the other UEFA doormats Liechtenstein and Andorra. But of course that makes only 3 or four bottowdwellers out of what 50+ UEFA national sides.

And for the record Monaco doesn't have a national team. Only the French club side

Monaco doesn't have a national team. But I'm sure Andorra and Malta would agree with San Marino :)

I guess Oceania is not as lopsided after Australia left to play in the Asian Confederation. New Zealand is the new "powerhouse" of Oceania, hehe.

Here is the PDF for it but to sum up:

Everyone plays in a group (cept for New Zealand) and the top 3 advance. Then the second round is those 4 teams, and the top 2 advance. The winner plays a playoff with the Asian 5th place team for a WC spot.

The first round of the Oceania qualification was at the 2007 South Pacific Games. The 10 teams were entered into two groups. The top two from each group advanced to playoffs. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams from the playoffs advanced to the 2nd round of Qualifying.

The 2nd round is those three teams and New Zealand. They play everyone else home-and-away. There is some discrepancy about whether the top two teams from that group will have a playoff or not. New Zealand seems to think that the top team will automatically advance to the playoff with the AFC team. FIFA has it with the playoff round.

The U.S., Mexico, and Canada national teams have friendlies in Europe on Wednesday, March 26 but many of the minnows of CONCACAF have 1st round qualifying matches on that day.

One is Dominica v. Barbados. The U.S. plays the winner of the series in June. The first leg between the two was 1-1.

Mexico will play the winner of Belize and St. Kitts & Nevis. Belize took the first leg 3-1.

Canada already has a 2nd round opponent in St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
