Most of you remember the Dynamo building a pretty solid rivalry with Pachuca. I even heard some posters on here confirm at least some level of respect for them as competitors that sometimes amounted to rooting for them in the Mexican league. Just wanted to pass along that Miguel Calero, who ya'll remember as their goalkeeper and captain during those years, isn't doing so good right now and has been declared brain dead. There are numerous stories online saying Calero is either dead, near death or brain dead. Very sad. There are conflicting stories, however, just as recent (literally minutes ago) saying he is improving. But ESPN is one saying the hospital has called for a priest. He has a brain hemorrhage apparently. Like I sad, terribly sad.
Tragic, really. He was a great goalkeeper and a wonderful competitor. I remember those games well between Pachuca and the Dynamo. They were exciting and just plain great games to watch and cheer for. And yes, I did appreciate Pachuca as a team because not only were the games between us exciting soccer but the players on both teams had tremendous respect for each other. You rarely see that. Well at least you know that Ngwenya's PK didn't cause any head injury that manifested itself later on. He was distinctive with that doo-rag he wore. Man, those games are starting to feel like they happened a long time ago.
Best of luck to him and hope he recovers! I will always remember those games with respect. He was the most memorable among their great team.
I am probably the only resident life-long Pachuca fan here. I remember experiencing some of their 2nd division teams, I remember the heart-break of being relegated in 1997 by an Hugo Sanchez goal, our rise to the first division in 1999 then winning our first title in 1999 against Cruz Azul, and of course the death of Pablo Hernan Gomez in 2001 in a tragic automobile accident. This team taught me to love soccer, and Calero brought me many moments of pure joy. He's the reason why the goalkeeper position is my favorite one in footie. He shaved his head because of a promise he made with a young cancer patient, and he never again let his hair grow out. Those games against the Dynamo split my heart in two. Pachuca retired the number 1 jersey for a few years in his honor after he retired. His famous quote was, "he was born a Colombian but considered himself more Mexican due to the love Pachuca showed him." I would write more but I'm not going to lie I'm ********ing heartbroken....
i remember towards the end of the series of games we had with Pachuca (2008 IIRC), he came over near the Dynamo bench at Robertson and exchanged a great handshake, bro-hug thing and kind words with Dom Kinnear. then he jogged straight to the Dynamo fans that were behind his goal to taunt them. LOL! there's a guy that was not only a great goal keeper and sportsman, but also knew that its part theatre and in this play he was the heel.
I remember in the final SuperLiga the crowd had been yelling puto after every goal kick, so in one of them he decided to fake kick it. The crowd yelled puto thinking that he was going for the goal kick, and he had completely tricked all of Robertson. He just smiled, laughed, and did the real one, but this time nobody yelled it. Haha. That was a classic moment in soccer.
un portero especial I agree with Rey, I love the theatre thing he would do. Like a true wrestling heel. But man he could play. Very intimidating guy. My prayers are with family. He was a great rival. Don't know if this is true- but it was confirmed by a few different guys in concessions at the Rob-they took up the bottle caps from the bottles they sold for a while-citing that Calero had stated that he would get pelted by them.
before telling my wife what has happened, i asked her if she remembered the keeper from pachuca that we faced during those games. she responded with "you mean the only one on their team with class? yeah, i remember him" says all you need to know about the guy after his death, he should be carried out on a shield ps maybe now, Costas will come out and bloviate about outlawing cerebral thrombosis
I hated us having to go up against this guy. He was one of those like Matt Reis who always found a way to keep our shots out of the net no matter how much we tried. Much respect for the guy. Very sad.
It was odd reading the reports last night, some were aging he had died, some that he was near death, but some that they were hoping he would improve, all reported with hours of each other. Pachuca was saying he was recovering. Wow, this is truly sad. Like others, I remember those games well and I admired him as a competitor. It seemed like a goal against him was special because you could see that he took each goal against him as almost a personal insult. I admired that intensity and dedication to the job and his club.
Wow! I couldn't believe the headlines until I read it was that Calero... This guy was so formidable - a giant of the game - he looked indestructible... Best wishes Miguel. Sad, sad day.
