Hey I made this: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AttujdNBdATWdE0xaW8wc3NnZHYtT3U1LVc1cFhrUHc&output=html (from my blog) TP - Total Points (RP + SP) RP - Round Points (1 point for every round the school advanced in the end of the year tourny) SP - Seed Points ('x' points for their respective seed. [seed]/16*7 = SP; 16 seeds in all; If no seed then zero points) DIFF - Difference in RP/SP; this should be pretty close Out to the right is every school's performance from 2011-2003. The first column under the year indicates how many rounds they reached (7 - Champion; 6 - Runner-up...) and the second column is the pre-tournament rank. Since 2003 NCAA has seeded the top 16 teams with byes while the other 32 chump teams have to play the first round. The most a school could get in a year would be 14 points. 7 for the championship and 7 for being seeded #1 going into the tournament, which UNC did this last year.
Interesting ranking system. Thanks for doing it and starting a discussion. Personally, I don't think the seeding should matter. We all know how flawed the seeding is since it's based on the antiquated RPI. IMO, a more representative ranking system of teams would attempt to eliminate conference and regional biases. Garbage in, garbage out Your ranking punishes a team like UCSB that tends to get a worse seed than they deserve and then do well in the tourney. Btw, I think you may have shortchanged UCSB for 2007
... what the difference in seed vs round points gives you are the teams that maybe most overachieve in the NCAA Tournament. Not to say that Maryland and Wake underchieve with their negative numbers (that are rated so highly every year that it is impossible to finish as highly as they are rated every year). It does point out the UCSB as an NCAA overachiever, along with Dartmouth, Brown, ODU, and Creighton
Well the seeding was a little bit of a reward for doing well in the season, which is how they seed the teams. I was surprised at how close many of the teams were with the RP and SP though. The RPI isn't great but nor is it the final say in the seeding. Not quite sure how to eliminate conference and regional biases more than I did with this. I think the only bias here is that I have to give points for a team that won their conference tourney against slum opponents. And UCSB, from my understanding, made a bit of a Cinderella run in 2006 when they came into the tournament with a 12-7 record and got to the championship. Still, they seem to thrive in a post-season format over a regular season. I don't follow them but maybe someone from the area can give some more insight on them. Good eye. I had a "UC Santa Barbara" and a "UCSB" in there. Fixed. Very correct. Although I think most of those later schools are "overachieving" because they're winning their conference, getting them at least one point, when they're not really near getting seeded ever. So it gets a little skewed on that.
You are effectively counting the seeding twice, and thus the faulty RPI twice. Here's why... the seeding gives a team a huge advantage for the playoffs by providing a bye and home field advantage. That makes it much easier to win. Take UCSB. We are 11-1 at home in the playoffs. If the selection committee used a more accurate tool than the RPI, then UCSB could have made just as many College Cups as any ACC school over the last 9 years. I don't know what yours stats attempt to show, but I think it is weighted far too heavily on seeding (ie. RPI). To turn this on its head, maybe seeding should count against a school to negate the advantage
Well again the points for seeding is a reward for a strong regular season in the case of an early exit from the tournament. Correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that the seeding is done by committee, not RPI. I wasn't excited about judging an entire team's season performance off tournament play, where most games end in a one goal differential. Specifically, Wake Forest came into the 2007 tournament ranked number one in the nation and loss their only game in the tournament. Shouldn't they be rewarded for being number one in the nation? I think the reason UCSB comes in ranked so low is because of their conference. Since 2003 there have been only eight Big West appearances outside of UCSB. That's less than one Big West team a year in the tournament + UCSB. Compare that to the ACC, Big East, Big 10 when multiple teams are always present. So when they come in with a 3-5 loss season it doesn't look as favorable for them. This is the case for most of the overachieving teams; they come from weaker conferences so the RP is significantly higher than the SP.
Maybe that's because Big West teams are snubbed for at-large berths more often. Like Cal Poly and CSUN being snubbed in favor of UCLA in 2007 (after CSUN beat UCLA 3:0) or UC Irvine being left out in 2005 and 2006.
Standings calculated using the NACDA Director's Cup scoring system. http://www.nacda.com/directorscup/nacda-directorscup-scoring.html At the end of the academic year, they award winners in D-I, D-II, D-III, and NAIA; totaling points earned in all sports that year. Scoring Chart: http://nacda.cstv.com/photos/schools/nacda/sports/directorscup/auto_pdf/dcscoring.pdf Team or Individual Sport (which are scored via the "team" method [basketball, soccer, ...] and which are scored via the "individual" method [track and field, swimming, ...]): http://nacda.cstv.com/photos/schools/nacda/sports/directorscup/auto_pdf/bracketdef.pdf I used the "48-team bracket" scoring (did not re-sort the standings; used Subjectively's original ordering): Place Points 1 100 2 90 3-4 83 5-8 73 9-16 64 17-32 50 33-48 25 I've never really understood how they came up with these point systems. The points earned by each round seems rather random ("out of tourney" to 33rd is +25; 33rd to 17th is +25; 17th to 9th is +14; 9th to 5th is [only] +9; 5th to 3rd is +10; 3rd to 2nd is [again, only] +7; 2nd to 1st is +10). I did not add any points for seeding. 2011; 2010; 2009; 2008; 2007; 2006; 2005; 2004; 2003; (Total); School 64; 73; 73; 100; 64; 64; 100; 83; 83; (704); Maryland 50; 0; 83; 83; 100; 83; 64; 64; 50; (577); I would be remiss if I did not point out that 534 is higher than 530 and thus Virginia should be above Akron in this list... thanks mostly to the fact that Virginia won the NCAA final in 2009 at Akron's expense! Thanks again, Blair Gavin.
