He's the Manager i.e. the guy in charge of all the administrative work of the national team. It's a little linguistic glitch that we have made a habit of using in this country :)

We are yet to appoint the head coach, that will be announced next week.

Nope. A month has passed since FAM announced a date. Not holding our breath, but we wouldn't mind attaining the services of Velizar Popov, who led New Radiant in an incredible season this year and is currently out of work.

Can someone please help me with the definition of an official match?

Here is the issue. Yosuf Kargar, coach of Afghanistan, and another official, were banned for 4 matches by AFC after the Challenge Cup Qualifiers in Laos. The verdict requires the ban for 4 "official matches" according to article 38.2.a. which says "AFC competitions for representative teams shall be carried over to the representative team’s subsequent official match."

The AFC Diciplinary Code defines an "Official match" like this "a match organised under the auspices of a football organisation for all of the teams or clubs in its sphere of operation; the score has an effect on the rights of participation in other competitions unless the regulations in question stipulate otherwise."

The question is whether SAFF Championship matches can be counted as official matches or the officials should spend the 4 match ban during the challenge cup?

Yeah it was somewhat risky for the Philippines to sign such an inexperienced coach, but he does have an excellent resume as a player both as a pro in the Bundesliga and with the US national team and so far he seems to be saying the right things, demonstrating the proper work ethic, and a commitment to do well in the Challenge Cup. I hope this move doesn't backfire especially with the tournament just a few months away, but he seems to have a plan in place at this early stage. Personally I would have preferred a proven commodity like Avramovic, but I am willing to give Dooley a chance to show what he can do. After all I have always liked the way he played as a defender, when he was with the US national team.

One thing for sure, being the highest profile American coach of a national team currently, he is getting plenty of press coverage internationally, more than other coaches would have had which is a positive since it helps raise the profile of the sport in the Philippines domestically. He has his own busy thread in the Yanks Abroad bigsoccer forum as a result.

cool I'm sure Thomas will dooley deliver... um like literally :p Seriously though, what's his experience - 1 season with SC Saarbucken more than a decade ago? Great player for the US but I agree he doesn't have much coaching experience... then again, didn't Phillipines recently have that English guy who didn't have much managerial experience either so we'll see how this works out.

Yeah, maybe financial considerations might have something to do with why they keep on hiring inexperienced coaches. He did have a short stint as assistant coach with Klinsman on the US national team team though.

They only gave him a short one year contract to see if he can cut it, although by then if they don't win the AFC Challenge Cup and lose the opportunity to play in the Asian Cup next year, there would be plenty of second guessing to throw around about this choice.

BTW, talking about catchy titles, I like what the US fans choose in the Yanks abroad thread, 'Thrilla in Manila : Dooley in the Philippines'. ;)

HANOI (13 March 2014) –Hoang Van Phuc has made it known of his decision to quit as the coach of the Vietnam national side. He made his decision to leave the country’s top job when he met with Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) general secretary Ngo Le Bang recently.
This is the second time that Van Phuc had informed the VFF of his decision to call it quits. The first was at the end of last year after Vietnam failed to make the cut for the semi-finals of the SEA Games.

HANOI (9 May 2014)– Takeshi Okada, who led Japan to the FIFA World Cup in 1998 and also in 2010, is leading the shortlist to be the new coach of Vietnam

The former defender for Furukawa Electric and also the Japan national side in the 80s, was introduced by the Japan FA (JFA) after the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) for recommendations.

Okada will take over the position left vacant by Hoang Van Phuc who resigned earlier this year.
