Am I the only person who doesn't see the purpose of any high school sports rankings?

State rankings are pointless because states have playoff systems to decide champions. National rankings are pointless because is there any journalist in the country who's seen even a quarter of the top 25 teams?

So, it's not just high school rankings you feel are pointless but pretty much the entire ranking system?

    Essentially.

Rankings are pointless if you don't see anywhere close to all the teams. How can you judge teams you don't see?

They are pointless in any system that has a playoff. Who cares who's #1 the third week into the season?

And what is the point of national rankings for HS teams? To win a mythical national championship? 11 of the top 12 teams in this ranking are undefeated. #6 has a perfect record but is ranked below #4 who has failed to win a third of their games. What is the purpose of such rankings?

It's dumb. And it encourages teams to run up the score against weaker teams.

The ranking system is fine for D-I college football, since it's incorporated into the BCS and bowl thing (and since they refuse to have a playoff like every other NCAA division and sport). But rankings in every other sport only serve the TV marketing people. And maybe the recruiters.

How in God's name can anyone rank high school soccer teams on a NATIONAL level? What points of comparison are used? Common opponents? Won loss records?

I'm sorry, but (for example) with all due respect to the Evansville, Indiana area, how many good teams can Evansville High have played to be ranked #3 NATIONALLY? Its not like Evansville is some hotbed of soccer with an abundance of great teams in the metro area.

This stuff is all rubbish and simply goes to feed the American obsession with rankings.

Agreed. It's simply a barometer and mainly used for bragging rights and to spark some discussion.

The team in question is Evansville Reitz Memorial High School - currently ranked #1 nationally. This year, they did travel to Illinois where I'm assuming several regional voters had a chance to view them personally. You can find a copy of their schedule on their website. Note: Indiana has very strict travel limitations that handcuff Indiana programs and the opponents they can legally play. This rule applies to all sports.

Evansville itself has above average talent in several programs. Typically there are three programs that are very well reprsented, Memorial, Castle and Harrison. However, several programs from the Indianapolis area are always legit. This year, Memorial played most of them and went unscathed. To further bolster their ranking (not saying it's legit, just more food for voters), they have an Adidas ESP player in Mitch Day.

Again, agreed. But does is it hurting the landscape of American soccer? Like I said, it's simply a barometer and can make for some decent fun.

A bit on Memorial: Prior to 1994 (when Indiana sanctioned soccer), Memorial was one of several premier teams in the region and had won a total of 10 state titles. After a long dry spell of decent (but not earth-shattering) talent, this program is back on track and won the state title this past weekend. Their coach has long been considered one of the best in the region and will continue to put out a strong stable of players. Most any program in the country would love to work with the talent that Memorial has.

And... all this coming from a rival coach. I remain a fan of the coach and the program and will always respect what they're able to yield.

Congrats. I used to play Club for Bill... a long time ago! He's a great guy; I'm glad to see him get the sanction monkey off his back.

    Any college plans for you?

North Kingstown with a 1-0 win over arch rivals South Kingstown to win the Div I state Championship in RI. NK ends the season at 18-0-2. Should probably move up a notch or two in the Rankings

Does anybody know anything about Blacksburg in Virginia? We played them last year and got beat pretty bad. 12 to 0 the first game and then once we played them and saw what they could go and got to see some film it was 6 to 0 the next game. They won AA State Championship and I heard they were ranked pretty high up there.
