Could another reason why FCE got the first week bye be that the weather in Edmonton is the most likely to be "less than optimal". It may also explain why it then gets three away games in a row to start the season.
Makes perfect sense to me. As does this: "But it would have been nice to see NASL announce the whole schedule, with the fall games including the Cosmos and Islanders, as a show of confidence for the fans and the teams. Only announcing the spring session still gives the air that the Islanders and Cosmos are in limbo." I thought the same thing.
Don't forget that the 750k standard is for 75% of the teams, so smaller locations can be picked. Boise doesn't make it quite yet but their growth pace should put them over the hump in the next decade. Throw in places like Colorado Springs, Ogden and Provo as smaller options that should grow into the 750k population level and are in the Mountain Time Zone.
Yeah, this isn't even an impression being given - it's pretty much precisely what was said when they first announced no Islanders for Spring.
NASL's New York Cosmos are planning on building new 25,000 seat stadium on Long Island : http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more-sports/cosmos-plan-400m-soccer-stadium-article-1.1240633
What does this mean for the MLS' proposed stadium at Flushing Meadows? The idea of two new 25 000 seat soccer stadiums 20 minutes from each other seems a little much. I know both are privately-funded, but don't both proposals mean the loss of public park space? Will Long Island residents be content with two? If only one were to go forward, which would it be? I always thought that the MLS stadium would house the Cosmos upon completion, with them making the jump to Div. 1. Seems I was wrong. Any insight people have would be great...
It means sweet FA, because this stadium for the Cosmos has a 0% chance of ever being more than a blueprint and some pretty pictures. It won't get approved, and it won't get built. If they had $400M to spend on this, they'd probably be in MLS already. This was a cheap PR stunt. Nothing more.
Ok, and I just read in the MLS forum that it may just be a ploy to put pressure on MLS for the Cosmos to be the NY2 team... It will be really interesting to see how this plays out.
can we get a Do Over on this whole Cosmos thing and drop them from the NASL entirely? It was kind of cool at first, even knowing they'd only be around until they either became the 2nd MLS team in NYC or folding after someone else did. But they have become a much bigger pain in the ass than its worth to the NASL, IMHO of course. Only IMHO.

I believe that the money behind the Flushing Meadows stadium, and the MLS NYC2 is the New York Mets, in which case, the Cosmos are dead. Well, maybe not. Perhaps they can survive in Hempstead as a D1 club. There's 1.3M people in Nassau County alone, so there ought to be enough folks to support both an NYC2 and the PseudoCosmos. Of course the BogusCosmos may get next to zero press coverage, and thus, may be ignored and consigned to oblivion. But based on population and disposable income levels, you'd think that there should be enough fans to support both teams. On the other hand, this is the USA. We support winners and pay no attention to also rans, like the runners up of the MLS Cup, or minor league teams. So yeah, the NeoCosmos are going to die. Besides, they are run by incompetent dweebs. - Mark
The Mets are actually opposed to the Flushing Meadows stadium and have suggested that Citi Field would be perfect to host a MLS team. That they own, of course. Nothing to disagree with here. Particularly the last part.
Do you have any basis for these statements or are they just your preconceived notions based on jack squat? Are you implying that MLS cup winners get attention? On what planet does that happen? It also sounds like you're implying that MLS is not "minor league." Haha to that one. And if mere incompetence is enough to kill NeoCosmos then surely MLS would be long dead and buried. If our bumbling top flight league can survive for nearly a generation then perhaps the clowns at NeoCosmos might too.
OK, so if the Mets are not behind the NYC2 plans, then who is? It's not MLS by themselves, there is other serious money involved. Do we know who that is? I had heard (or possibly conflated) that it was the Mets. I could be more excited about the PseudoCosmos of they actually had grown out of the previous Cosmos, or at least had several former Cosmos FO personnel involved, or a bunch of former players, or hell, even the kids of the former owners. Something more tangible than Pele. He was a great player, but he'll lend his name to anything that might make him a buck. They can't manage to field a team for the spring season? Can't get a ticket seller organized? But they are going to build a $400M stadium? Yeah, sure. - Mark
There are supposedly four groups interested in being NYCFC. One of them is the Cosmos and another involves Chuck Blazer to some level. I'm not sure who the other two are, but the Mets were in the running up until Wilpon got sucked into the Maddoff mess, so perhaps they are one of others? Regardless, MLS is the one spearheading the stadium and have said that is one of the reasons why they want the $100 million expansion fee for NYCFC.
