Got to see the TB game on Sat. Sitting in what was designed to be the cheap seats in right field, I had a perfect view down the midfield stripe and out into the Gulf of Mexico. Not exactly Old Trafford, but perfectly enjoyable in its own right. Oh, and the refs did a very nice job. Wonderfully professional stuff.
Wednesday, May 16 Puerto Rico vs Atlanta - William ANDERSON (5Y, 1R) Saturday, May 19 San Antonio vs Edmonton - Leszek STALMACH (1Y, 0R) Carolina vs Puerto Rico - Robert SIBIGA (2Y, 0R) Atlanta vs Tampa Bay - Marcos DEOLIVERA (3Y, 0R) Fort Lauderdale vs Minnesota - Armando VILLARREAL (5Y, 0R)
Wow another friend of mine from South Texas. Had a very calm and restrained style when I knew him. Would love to see footage of this game.
I think he missed a PK in the first half. I know no one likes to call them, also I'm not sure the camera is WAY far away but it did look like a penalty. EDIT: After the goal the ref calls a free kick near the top of the box. The defender comes up and stands in front of the ball, and the offensive player tries to push him off and then kicked the ball into him. Now the offensive players are complaining about how they can't take the kick and the defensive players are complaining that they took the kick so they no longer get a kick. This is the kinda thing I don't get...why are you playing this game if it's just to sit around and tattle and whine about stuff. Shut up and play.
How to handle that: http://www.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2012-05-26-clb-v-chi/highlights?videoID=187178
Another take down in the box box by the keeper...at 140 abouts in Part 1. Am I crazy or does that look like a certain penalty?
Eh I don't agree 100%. The player with the ball is literally just kicking it into the player, he has no target in mind. You can manage this with words first in this case, also not where the ball is on the field. In high school it's more black and white though. Mostly I would like players if they actually want to play the ball quickly don't play it straight forward...look for a pass to the side away from that player. Than if he goes for it and stops the pass he's getting his caution...not while he's just standing and you kick it into him, just looks like you're both babies.
I wish more referees would pounce on this sort of delay tactic as Chapman did. If a player is standing behind a free kick possibly looking to take the kick quickly and an opponent runs in front with the obvious intent of preventing any sort of quick free kick, a yellow card ought to be produced. Far too often does this sort of action go unpunished, especially in the professional leagues.
Sorry I've been posting so much but I am awestruck by this game. This is my last post if anyone cares to read it that's great. This is the NASL, 2nd Division right behind MLS I guess if you ignore the reserve league. It's absolutely incredible to watch. The level of play is awful, it doesn't look like some of these players could even come close to the MLS. The officials are given no respect whatsoever, and he's constantly getting whined at from these entitled babies who couldn't hack it in a good league but for some reason believe they're gods gift to the game. I hope this game wasn't the norm cause I turned it off, it was just horrendous, I'd have more fun watching a u-10 game.
No I agree it should be stamped out, but the video you produced I think deserves to be managed instead. Gotta see the whole picture, the ball is in the defensive end...there's no player he's looking to for a quick counter. It's silly and should be stopped but if you can manage a situation that isn't going to really effect the game, you absolutely should. edit. Last post I swear
Manage, schmanage. You can't "manage" the thousands of players watching the game who will see this guy get away with delaying the restart of play. To tolerate this kind of crap is to encourage it.
Sunday, May 27 Edmonton vs San Antonio - Sheena DICKSON (7Y, 0R) Of note, the fourth official on this game was David Gantar. He lives in Edmonton, so I guess he was on hand and they needed someone to fill in.
Players really don't like him. I don't know what it is but I haven't seen a player ever happy with him and just chatting, it's always yelling and contentious. I have no idea if that's David or the fact that MLS players are awful people.
I'd attribute that to the fact that his experience in MLS is highly limited. Having met him, I can tell you he's a very charismatic, likeable guy, much like Ricardo Salazar. It took Salazar several years to develop the good rapport he has with the players.
Lots of high level refs are very charismatic. Yeah Ricardo is like that, and he talks to the players constantly, he seems to get way more respect. Ya know Kevin Stott gets a lot of respect too and he's very quiet and keeps to himself, on the field though he's very direct. He explains exactly what happened and exactly what he's doing about it. I haven't seen him try to massage his message or talk to a player at length often, just simple direct answers. Sometimes charisma doesn't translate or it just doesn't work, and I can see it not working for Gantar in the games I've watched of his. I think I remember him giving a 2nd yellow card to a Toronto player last year (my memory ain't great) and it going all sorts of wrong which could've been handled better if he had explained his decision better.
Gantar's decision-making needs improvement. The second caution to Tony Tchani last year for jumping into the crowd in celebration of a goal was technically correct. And the players need to know better. But Gantar has made some poor decisions in his few games in MLS. His style on the field comes across as very green. With a little more experience I think he could be a very well-respected, well-liked referee. I don't think we'll see him again until at least July, but I'm excited to watch Gantar develop.
I got to see Kevin Terry Jr. at the Strikers v Rowdies game yesterday. Overall I liked his style. Ran very smart and did a lot of things well. There were situations which he did not handle well though. In the 2nd half, with the Rowdies winning 1-0, AR1 calls a PK in favor of the Strikers and Terry initially did not know whether it was inside the PA or not even though it was a clear yard or two in. The hesitation caused him some trouble. When the PK was taken, the kicker started his run-up, and once Terry noticed that, he whistled. While he did not break the LOTG, the keeper was not ready, and after the Strikers tied up the game, the keeper ran almost to midfield in clear dissent. No action was taken by Terry. Right after the goal, the Strikers got a throw in right by the Rowdies corner arc, and Terry decided then to go to inside the 6 and talk to the keeper about what he just did. The Strikers took a quick throw in, and took a quick shot (almost like an olympic goal) over the distracted Rowdies keeper. Then, after the 3rd Strikers goal, the Strikers players went to taunt the Rowdies visiting crowd. At first they didn't go overboard, but at one point, one of the Strikers players actually went into the stands and had to be restrained by security. No caution was given. Did anyone else get to catch the match online? I would like to discuss these situations with someone who might have seen it
Saturday, June 2 Carolina vs Puerto Rico - Niko BRATSIS (6Y, 1R) Fort Lauderdale vs Tampa Bay - Kevin TERRY JR. (3Y, 0R) San Antonio vs Minnesota - Jorge HERNANDEZ (1Y, 0R) Sunday, June 3 Edmonton vs Atlanta - Drew FISCHER (3Y, 1R)
Bit of a strange red from Drew Fischer. Can't imagine it's for DOGSO and the SFP argument is weak. Not sure what he was going for here, but this looks like it should be a caution. At 1:46:30 in the part 1 video. http://nasl.com/index.php?id=488&getGameID=178
maybe he saw the cleat hit the knee- and thought it was sfp- it seemed in between a yellow and red. tough call to make.
