I think the owners do have an interest in friendlies and have realized that scheduling is an issue in selling tickets. The NASL doesn't play a lot of weekday games and they want the opportunity to host those friendlies on prime weekend dates as well. I agree that most teams will take a breather and rest players for a couple weeks, while playing one exhibition, maybe two tops. I could see little mini tournaments possibly by some of the more ambitious clubs. Think the Charleston tournament, but in midseason. Invite two or three clubs to play a round robin. There is also a possibility that Open Cup matches could fall during their season break as well.
