This is currently on the front page of the Tampa Bay Rowdies (http://www.tbrowdies.com/). The fallout from NuRock purchasing NuRock has brought up St. Louis Soccer United is involved with the Team Owners Association. In the above picture is logo I think appeared on some websites a while ago with the name St. Louis United SC. Interesting to see that image appear again.

Was anyone else struck by how classy our crest looks compared to all the other ones?

um, what is this, your first week on the internet?

um, actually, i didn't make any jokes. just pointed out the many fallacies of your argument.

actually, no, i was simply pointing out that that was one of the negative results of the name you were suggesting. try to keep up.

sorry, i must've forgotten, what trophy does the league give out for "most original name," again?

Gee, i wonder if St. Louis fits any of those criteria....

hmmm....perhaps a metropolitan area, divided by a major river, that is on a state border, each side with stigmas about the other....UNITED to support a team?

like, say, the three biggest youth clubs, operating separately for decades, coming together to form the potential club's youth academy?

By that definition, shouldn't EVERY team be called "United"

Apparently reading comprehension is a struggle for you. Nowhere did I say that. I did say, however, that I would prefer not to make it so easy for them.

    And you'd be wrong.

Less common, but still previously used. So, it's still not "original." Being more rare is not the same thing as being unique.

    well, because they suck.

i didn't "think of" united either. just like you didn't "think of" these names. you took them from other teams. copying is not the same as thinking. i'm sure you learned that in school.

Wow um.... chill out, maybe? No need to attack every single half sentence of someone's post. Not like we're actually going to get a team anytime soon, or that we would have a choice in the naming of said team if it came.

take it that's sarcasm and irreverence (plus a double bluff). nice, but at least I gave it a go and stuck my head above the trench, even if it did result in a cartoon man humping donkey.

you have to gimme some credit for drawing some cool lookin backround shapes out of the original badge but? the arch mixed with the crest mixed with the crown and the way that these can fit in with a fleur de lis? you could probably have just had a giant fleur, if it wasn't for the fact that Montreal have that and they've stolen you're place in the league (sorry to bring that up again)

in the line up of badges, st louis soccer united does look classy but it looks more like a social club or a company than a sports team. needs simplifying. for example, the whitecaps badge stands out - the only real problem is the stupid font and slightly awkward design of the ball.

if a list was being made up for voting the one's that I think sound Ok would include:

    Knights
    United
    Converge
    Academical
    Archers
    Bohemians
    Soccer Club
    Athletic
    ASC

but with the caveats that Knights sounds more like a USL type name and United may not be cleared by MLS for use because of the brand clash with DC United.

the one's that would be easier to sell would be Archers, SC and Athletic (assuming no legal complications).

but I think Converge is quite interesting and bold as a singular noun rather than a group or adjective.

Why would there be a legal complication with that name (outside of Philly anyway)?

BTW, if the name the team "converge", I'm never going to a game.

Yes, that was sarcasm to be sure. But you definitely deserve credit for a worthy effort!

Since the King Louis crest first appeared, I think most of us have focused on a royalty-themed team name. But I wouldn't be surprised if the final version was a Lewis and Clark theme such as Explorers.

Huh; I had never thought about that before. Good point. I guess I wouldn't be surprised, but I would be disappointed if the went the something about the 1804 expedition.

i was referring to all of the suggestions - I definitely think that MLS would block a second team called united in the league for instance.... even if it is more appropriate to st.louis than DC.

also, would people in the women's league hierarchy perhaps have a problem with a name that encroached on their 'brand identity' for Athletica?

I take it from your interest in Philly's flirtation with the name, that you like the idea of Athletic?

I was thinking, the women's team have said that the 'a' at the end of their name indicates feminine qualities. So if you were choosing a male counterpoint, what would that be perhaps?? .... The St Louis Athletes [Soccer Club]?
    (doesn't sound too bad eh?)

MLS already said we cannot use it.

Cooper owns Athletica - he can name his team Athletic if he wants.

    [/quote]

Athletic has already been discussed to great lengths and most like it.

    It matches the sister team
It goes well with the history of the "Missouri Athletic Club" here in STL that gives away the Herman Trophy to the top college soccer players.

Philly's use of Athletic is a problem only because the Oakland A's still own the trade mark to Philadelphia Athletics.

I'd say be St. Louis Athletic, and have an arch incorporated into the crest/kit and just call them the Archers in parlance

Archers sounds like a team of 10 year olds - I probably played against a half-dozen "Archers" in grade school. It is over-the-top clichéd IMHO.

I couldnt agree more. I personally like the idea of the nickname of the team to come from the fans not an animal or action noun n(clash, burn). From what ive heard about St. Louis its a city that has a deep soccer history. The SC is simple and will always be a good name.

Also I know some MLS teams still have names with "s" on the end(earthquakes, wizards, etc.) but those types of names do seem like USL names. Also i think MLS teams have been realizing that more soccer type naming works better with the fans. most recent names have been traditional to soccer -SSFC, TFC, FCD, Union, dynamo and 4 out of 5 of them seem to be headed for success because the name sounds much more professional.

Also the notion that the average american might go to a game if the name is the knights(something traditionally american) is wrong. It is very obvious that America has the most crowded landscape of any other country and being that MLS is new compared to most other sports if MLS doesnt offer a unique experience there will be no reason for the average joe to attend MLS games over the minor league baseball games hes been going to for years. Also I dont think MLS should worry about the average joe. America does have a very large soccer fanbase I think that MLS needs to tap into that more so than the average american that couldnt give a darn about soccer. The American soccer fanbase is very knowledgeable and they have been exposed to very good soccer through euro leagues and the champions league. What these fans want from MLS is good quality of play and they also want that same experience that european soccer offers, part of that is the name, which may be the most important thing because it is the first impression a person gets about a team.

Sorry about my rant, also i dont totally hate Gateway SC either, and I am probably more of a fan of MLS than anything right now so i just want to see the league and its teams be successful.

I'd be okay with St. Louis Archers as the official name of the club. But like ChicagoFC said, if it was just the casual name that attaches itself the team, I'd probably be a bigger fan of that. Whether the real name was StL United, SC, or Athletic, I really like Archers as the informal name. It feels too iconic of the city to pass up.

How about Louis IX for the official name of a men's side? It would pay homage to both St. Louis the man and St. Louis the city, plus it would go great with the present logo. I really think it would be a great name, short, sweet, looks good and very fitting. King Louis IX would work too, but Louis IX sounds cooler IMO.

There is a team in the Netherlands named Willem II, after their king. Tilburg, the name of the city, is present on the badge but not part of the official name. I really think it would work for St. Louis as well.

Wow, I'm surprised we haven't revived this thread yet (though admittedly we have kinda beaten the subject over and over again....) So what are people's thoughts now that it seems a team if imminent?

St. Louis Athletic(s) / Athletic St. Louis
St. Louis AC / AC St. Louis {{STLAC? o_O}} (and any AC/SC/FC varient)
    Louis XI
    St. Louis Archers
    St. Louis United
    (something to do with Lewis@Clark)
    St. Louis Knights / Crusaders
    more?
