Vergara in the end could get his way, but the fact the media department released this tweet afterwards suggests he rethought his position.

Chivas will now support Mexican players no matter what national team they play for. Do we not know that there are Mexicans all over the world?

Vergara was yapping his mouth on some phone interview, said you could still play for Chivas even if you played on a different national team (not naturalizados, but pochos, etc.). Chivas later tweeted (no press release, no "official clarification") that you can't play for Chivas if playing for another national team.

I think it does matter. Because it's a big part of the team's identity, and because it will keep coming up. I think it is time for Chivas to reshape its image. These are not the early 1900s. Times have changed. What it meant to be Mexican then does not mean the same thing now. We are arguing about this in English!

yeah and you are in the US not Mexico. Chivas is a mexican team with a heritage. This would be a sell out. They are praised for being the top feeder team to the Mex NT.

Being Mexican means playing for the Mexican team, not any other.

If Chivas cant hang with its Mexican only image, then change entirely to take on argies and all nationalities.

In addition, I think we can be Chivas fans and Mexican National Team fans separately. Other than having a strong academy to develop good players, I don't think Chivas' main goal should be to be the base of the Mexican National Team. Chivas' main goal should be to be a force in the world of soccer, supporting Mexican talent, even if that Mexican talent is a pocho with no real shot at making the Mexican national team so he opts to play for the soccer team of the nation where he grew up in. I think we (people that post on "bigsoccer") should understand this more than anyone. I can see people in Mexico not seeing this favorably, but I don't understand why people on this forum are so close minded. I mean, most of our kids will most likely not speak Spanish properly. What does that say about what it means to be Mexican? I think this issue brings out a lot of questions about our identity.

Plus, we know how important the Mexican supporters are that live in the US, both for the Mexican National Team AND for Chivas.

A few things, its not Chivas Job to supply the Mexican NT with players. Thats the FMF's job to find players that suit their needs and goals. If the FMF wants Chivas to be the main supplier then they need to pony up more cash then they are currently doing. They should also then intercede to make sure Chivas gets their number 1 transfer target every off season since they will be raping the squad with their callups anyways.

Secondly, I thought Cryuff had told Vergara to stay away from the spotlight. The immediate twatter denial is interesting. This could be another one of those marketing campaigns where you leak something then see how people react to it...

If signing Hercules Gomez, Gringo Castillo/Orozco or Torres is what Team Cryuff scouts came up with I'm a little disappointed since Beane just hyped all the work they did to lay a strong scouting foundation. Those players aren't exactly unearthed gems.

I agree with El Burro regarding the identity issue. I can't reconcile and find it a contradiction that it would be ok for Nery to play for Chivas, who we know identifies as Uruguayan and was going to play for them and even mulled playing for Greece, but not ok for Jesus Padilla to play for the baby nads and Chivas.

Yes, I live int he US, but that does not make me less Mexican than you. I support Chivas AND the Mex NT, and always will, despite the fact that I was born in Los Angeles. If I had a kid, and he played soccer well enough to play for the US, but Mexico does not want him on the team, I would not think of him as being any less Mexican because he decides to play for for the US.

Bringing in someone from another country, with no prior ties to the people only to play soccer for the team is not the same as bringing in someone like Hercules Gomez, Gringo Castillo, or Gringo Torres, who are of Mexican descent AND play in the Mexican league. Being Mexican is not just someone that is born in Mexico AND plays for the Mexican National Team. Being Mexican is much broader and complex than that.

disclaimer: I don't want Gomez, Castillo or Torres anywhere near the team, I just mention their names to make a point.

you are actually NOT mexican if you are born in the US. You are american, or for pride's sake, you can call yourself Mexican-American.

Go to Mexico and they will call you a gringo, just like they do herc, torres, etc.

Sure your piece of legal paperwork may say mexican, but thats a technicality.

Its all about the heritage of Chivas being a Mexican only club. Grooming Mexican players in Mexico by Mexicans. If herc grew up in LV, he was coached and taught by NADS, not Mexicans. He grew up in a US environment, not Mexican.

I never said Chivas is obligated to provide anyone to the NT, but that is something that they take pride in. #s of players called up that come from Chivas. Chivas, la base de la seleccion, etc.

If they go through with this, it will be a disgrace.

If you think mercs like gille on the NT is a disgrace, Chivas is all that is left holy. lol.

Can I call myself Mexican AND American? Please?

I go to Mexico and they call me Mexican, because I speak Spanish fluently and because I grew up in Guanajuato.

    I know who I am.

You are not familiar with how many expats from Mexico are working as coaches in the US.

Let me help you out, if the player is big fast and strong but has zero touch or only plays in one speed (headless chicken). Read Jozy Altidore. He was coached by a Nad and you would be right.

Even in Mexico you trainers aren't all Mexican. There is dutch, Argentine, Brazillian and Uruguayans and countless other nationalities. There is even Salvies there.

Chivas holy under Vergara? Didn't he used to rent out the players to rich people so that they can attend their parties? Didn't he shut the door on Ramon, the last remaining idol on our team?

    Chivas, how holy art thou.

I don't think it's holy. It's an institution, run by men, and I want it to better. And I think it can be A LOT better.
