I think the answer is obviously YES. My mate wrote a wee piece on why he must be started aside from the fact that he is the most talented striker on the team. http://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/v4wz8/must_roy_hodgson_start_rooney_against_ukraine/ So, do you all think he MUST start, or can Roy get away with bringing him on later in the match seeing as how we got a positive result vs. Ukraine?
If Roy doesn't start Rooney and the unthinkable (but for the brit media!) Happens. His name will be forever smeared in shit!!!!
I assumed the only reason for this thread would be someone was going to make an agrgument AGAINST Rooney starting.
I belong to a few other message boards and there are arguments against him starting. Not against him playing, just against him starting. The argument is that after a quality win, use him to come off the bench and keep the team intact... I don't personally buy it, however, but the argument is out there.
I'd say yes simply because we haven't used a consistent line up yet. Play him in place of Carroll I would.
Bit of a wasted squad pick if we don't actually utilise Rooney. The manager would not picked a player who was out for two games unless he was worth waiting for in the latter stages. He will start if fit.
As ive said before a stronger manager with a stubborn approach ie german italian would leave rooney out on a matter of principle
what's the principle? he's our best player. it would be akin to Portugal dropping Ronaldo. he should play.
I hadn't realised that Rooney hadn't scored a goal in an international tournament since 2004. Before this tournament started I thought missing the first two games would help him. He seemed to have some sort of nervous breakdown at the 2010 World Cup - so sitting out the two games would help him get his shit together without any more pressure than a spectator.
personally i wouldn't start him tonight, i would play the same team as we did vs france and if young is not playing well sub him for rooney
I guess it turned out okay, eh? I was kinda leaning towards starting him, but I understood the argument for leaving the starting XI intact.
[As someone who actually saw the match from the stands/press box; I suppose that putting Rooney in the starting XI was a bit of a "Catch-22" situation for Hodgson IMHO...]
[I missed this during the whole boards "re-boot" affair. I was in London for a handful of days after the tournament: I was there as a de facto editorial consultant...]
