And make a martyr out of him? No thanks.

Edit: Sigh. When will I learn?

We could repeal the religion part of the 1st amendment, tax churches and tell Islam to bugger off

Bridges? You need two banks to build a bridge. I think the poor Imam is building a pier.

It's foolish, but I admire idealists. Well, some idealists anyway.

As someone who has fought tooth and nail to overturn a zoning decision imposed by a city, I know for a fact that they don't have the right to build anything at all if the city doesn't want them to.

    But I wish they did.

Christ. CNN picked it up and put a similarly dumbshit headline on it. To wit:
It seems the media is only too happy to spur this shit on.

In the Anderson Cooper video you linked, most of the panel downplays the poll, saying the same thing you did. Zakaria was the only one to emphasize a racial dynamic. The white dudes didn't agree with him.

I admit I didn't watch the video. The choice of headline was shit, though.

NASCAR? I like the road course races okay, but not much more. Mullet? Technically, my hair doesn't really do that...

Serious question for the older people here.

Was the 60s anything like this? Y'know..racial tensions super high and too few people speaking up for what is not just morally right, but legally so?

Good lord...they have every right to build whatever they want (zoning laws permitting) on their own property. Maybe it's my youth, but what exactly is the argument here? It seemed to have started as being "insensitive" somehow to being...what? A focal point of racial fear/hatred? I'm not even sure anymore.

The argument is that Islam is a religion of terror, thus making this, a victory terror mosque. Because a small group of radicals committed a crime in the name of a immensely larger group, all members of that group are now guilty. Perhaps you should read up on your Soviet law.

You probably haven't read the whole thread, but two or three posters have mentioned the fact that this is exactly the type of thing that Dr. King was responding to in his Letter. So you can probably conclude "yes", unless you're one of those who for some reason fits into the category described by Real Corona above.

That there are people who have to "speak up" in favor of the mosque/center being built --not on the opponents' timetable but on that of the worshippers, not on the location approved by the fearful and/or hateful but on that approved by the worshippers without concern for the wishes of the fearful and/or hateful-- suggests strongly that much work remains to be done, even in this so-called enlightened era.

Why should we treat Beck like he allegedly treated a young girl in 1990?

I cannot give Nixonland a high enough recommendation to you. It's a pretty long read, but it goes quickly because it's well written. Trust me, you'll understand Palin and the Mosque of Death and other things a hell of alot better after having read that book. As a prof used to say, history doesn't repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme alot.

To be fair to smiley, he does not recommend that we first rape Glenn Beck.

I have taken superdave's recommendation, and I can endorse his claims. It's a damn good book. The strategies being used by the right in 2010 have deep roots.

One of the great things about Nixonland, btw, is that it doesn't left liberalism and/or the left off the hook, either.

What religion isn't terrifying? :D in this case no pork, no alcohol, covered women, and countless other harams. this doesn't even include the need to pray 5 times a day.

    scary stuff
