yeah I mentioned college football already as a likely source as to why this game probably won't get this high. Game time is 3:30pm eastern on NBC.
OK, this is a quick update to the summary *fixed the ESPN average mistake that RfrancisR caught *Added in more historical data that Howard the Drake found *Added in a "sources" section, at least until the links die ======================================================= 2012 Season Home teams listed first NBC Sports Network Game 1: 82k (Dal vs NY). So exactly 30 minutes before the Seattle-located University of Washington kicks off against Portland State at CLink Field in Seattle. I'm guessing that's going to draw a number of eyeballs from the Seattle and Portland markets. Oregon kicks off against Tennessee Tech 30 minutes before kickoff of the MLS game as well, which will also draw eyeballs. (Wazzu plays the night before and Oregon St. has a bye)
Tennessee Tech? 72-0 in favor of the fashion models. Game will be decided by the time Timbers-Sounders want to kick off. And Portland State hasn't had a following since UO and OSU started to actually win some games and were televised locally.
If it draw eyeballs from the Portland market, they will be Husky eyeballs (of which there are more than a few). Nobody here gives a rats-ass about PSU pointyball.
I remember watching Pittsburgh State against Portland State playoff games at Civic Stadium... The scoreboard would get confusing when limited to 3 letters.
Oh, just another note about that NBCSN rating: It was the seventh highest program on NBCSN last week. Tour De France related programming took spots one through six.
I think you are repeating yourself https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/threads/mls-tv-ratings.1914571/page-71#post-26062450
He's right about the part, though, where those numbers aren't really comparable with the other 3 leagues.
The recent NBCSN LA vs Portland game was 259k and not 256k. Two independent sources have now verified the number. I will change in my next update
Wednesday's Top 10 had four MLS highlights including Henry's goal at #1. SC also did highlights for the Sounders-Chelsea game (I understand it's an EPL friendly on their network, but it's worth nothing it's also a loss).
Its helpful. As time goes on the league will grow more and more of a fanbase with money to spend. as that happens and more merch, attention, sports dollar ect is put to futbol. Well...its inevitable that more coverage will come with it. it just takes time. when the league hits 30-40 years old you will see some serious returns on the investment over the past years.
Its truly unfortunate MLS fans have to experience the games thru the words of Galaxy filth Kyle & Galexi. Its like getting news from the Voice Of America. The Bull$h!t meter goes off the hook.
The next TV rights cycle is going to change a few things...ESPN knows that they have to commit more dollars and resources towards MLS to avoid losing being MLS's Tier 1 platform... 2014-2022 is like the 3rd phase for MLS (new TV contracts, almost all teams playing in their own stadium, 20 teams)... During this phase, we should see the ratings rise dramatically (sequentially).e It would be stupid for ESPN to walk out of a property that is on the verge of further growth and increase TV ratings. It gives them a property that could fill the weak summer slots with a young demographic. Fundamentally, the league looks good. ESPN has to focus on creating stars (Storylines, More Sportscenter, more marketing). The key might be an half-hour Soccer/Football show on a daily basis on ESPN2 (sometimes on ESPN) to highlight the domestic and international Football. They might have to re-introduce ABC for some games. To suffice, NBC/Comcast is going to make an aggressive bid to keep MLS and even become the Tier 1 platform. Viewers are persuaded by stories and coverage. With more consistent coverage, it gives the viewers the impression that it is no longer a minor league, but a major upcoming young league. You need compelling stories and stars to get the casual viewers attention.
