If Wiki is right its a 1:1.159 ratio, so a .6 overnight means 695,400 households? That would be an amazing number given that the first 30 minutes of the broadcast was on ESPN2. It's an amazing number for a game on ESPN. Almost as good as 2010 MLS Cup I think.
They were saying earlier in this thread that the overnights, which includes the 0.6 figure reported, likely includes the Eng-Ita overrun into the initial MLS timeslot. They'll publish more accurate, and likely lower, numbers later.
From an earlier post in this thread.. From that it looks like the SEA-POR game got at least a mil viewers, no? But I don't understand the rating points and its relation to viewers completely. Maybe the final number will fall a little below that. It should be a solid number, nonetheless.
With all due respect to other teams and their fans.... I'm soooo glad this was Portland; on a sunny summer day with Seattle visiting. Really couldn't have gone much better than that. As for the switch to and from ESPN2: I don't think it was a detriment and was maybe even a positive. Made for a quicker turnaround to a game already in full swing. Less chance for viewers to jump ship before at least seeing it.
It's not linear. One rating/viewership does not always linearly track a different rating/viewership. Hopefully it will be 800k or higher.
Last year Portland at Seattle drew 467k viewers on ESPN Seattle at Portland drew 328k viewers on ESPN2
This. Viewership is generally lower during the day. A 2.4 in the afternoon is normally around 2.4 million viewers. At night (during prime time), a 2.4 can be as high as 5 million viewers. Given the time slot, I'd say a .6 translates to about 0.8 to 0.9 million viewers, and the earlier Euro quarterfinal is probably about 2.5 million viewers.
Let me try and summarize Rating = % of households who tune into the program Viewership = total number of viewers actually watching a program If you watch as a household, that is not variable. One person or seven people in the household could be watching it does not matter, the household gets logged. However, the number of people who watch a show is highly variable with in the household. Because of that variable, it is an inexact science trying to predict number of viewers based on a household rating.
This. During the day, most Neilson households with their TV on only have around one viewer. At night, there are normally 1.5 to 2 viewers per household. People get home from work/school, and there are more people in each family watching the TV.
I like the general feel of both the Timbers-Sounders and 'Quakes-Galaxy ESPN commercials, but they end way too quickly. The narrator attempts two throw each teams full name and the start time / channel into the last three or four seconds of the ad. Just going with the nicknames would make it seem less rushed.
ITALY VS. ENGLAND THRILLER ATTRACTS 2.1 MILLION VIEWERS ON TSN. http://www.tsn.ca/soccer/story/?id=399231 Pretty impressive number, no doubt helped by the large number of Canadians of italian and english heritage. Here are all 4 qtr finals tv ratings on TSN. Italy vs. England: 2.058 million viewers Spain vs. France: 1.13 million viewers Germany vs. Greece: 917,000 viewers Portugal vs. Czech Republic: 652,000 viewers
His first game on ESPN was not a league game. When LA played Chelsea on ESPN with Becks making his brief debut for LA, they drew a 1.0 and 947k households. When LA played DC United on ESPN2, with Becks making his MLS TV debut, they drew a .45 and 422k households.
So do we know the # with out the Penalty kicks part on ESPN yet? Is that the 0.6 number because if it is that is pretty good.
Seeing the huge ratings increases for international soccer has me feeling really good. So good that I will hazard a prediction that MLS will also see huge percentage ratings increases. I'm just not so sure when. 5 years?
Maybe, but I could also see where a 2-0 score flashing up immediately on switch wouldn't help keep people interested.
When watching the NBA, I have noticed that in game, the announcers mention upcoming telecasts on other stations (TNT mentions upcoming ESPN games and vice versa). I don't remember this happening for MLS games though on ESPN/NBC.
We typically get the numbers on Tuesday, so hopefully bot the ESPN, and NBC viewership numbers will come in today and we can update the season stats.
