Highlights

An expansion team could arrive in Portland as early as next year, Garber said, but he was quick to note that such a time frame seems "very, very unlikely."

The 13-club MLS is experiencing a growth spurt after struggling for 11 years to make the world's most popular sport appealing to those in the United States.

Several MLS teams have turned profitable in the past few years. This season, for the first time in league history, every MLS game will be televised. And the January signing of British megastar midfielder David Beckham by the Los Angeles Galaxy has further piqued interest in the league. The season opens April 7.

MLS started with 10 teams in 1996, added two more two years later and contracted back to 10 after the 2001 season before expanding again to 12 in 2004. Toronto FC is the league's newest franchise, starting play this season.

The league is expected to add three more clubs by 2010. Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, the Bay area and Seattle had all been discussed about as possible expansion sites.
