The creative eye suggests it's probably the facade of their home stadium (colored in with their colors), which they are proud of. Think deeply
I was watching the Colo -RSL game yesterday and was wondering why do they have both supporter clubs so close to each other ? they were literally 20 feet apart. By the way that RSL flag was huge props to them.
I asked the same question last night. I'm not saying it's a bad thing but do any other MLS stadiums have the away fans sit a stone throw away from the home supporters section? Someone told me PPL Park have the away supporters sit close to the SOB but I've never caught it on the television. Perhaps the camera's view doesn't catch it. Anyone want to take this one?
Keep an eye on both groups at the same time. RSL flag was big but printed. After last night the rivalry feels reborn (can't have a rivalry if one side is winning all the games).
At PPL Park the away supporters are situated a section or two (for NY and DCU supporters as they are larger groups) from the River End. There is also a gap between the River End and the corner seats at that end of the stadium. Typically the FO closes off one section of the concourse to be used only by the away support for the large contingents of NY and DC fans. It's not ideal, but there have been no major incidents as of yet. It's safe to say that large groups of traveling fans were not taken into consideration when the stadium was designed.
This is to give you a better idea of the size. The banner was approximately 220 feet long and about 30 feet high. The white letters are about 13 feet tall, and were all made freehand with no projectors or stencils. It took 4 days to make. Definitely the biggest single thing our tifo crew has made. Isn't that the same overhead they've been using the last couple of years at their home games?
That pie-shapped section in the corner at Dick's is honestly the best place to put visiting supporters. Other parts of the stadium have been tried, but that is the best place to contain visiting supporters. The RMC game is really the only instance where you have to worry about problems. They had extra barricades and a lot more security and police than for a more typical game.
With all the time I spent on their construction thread I feel embarrassed for not noticing this. Yeah, pretty sure its the one that circles around at halftime / into the start of the second half. Here's a pregame shot of it from RSL's Twitter page. And I'm under the impression that having both home and away supporters in the same end/corner allows for all PG-13 content to remain in one corner while families can sit at the opposite end (Yet such a strategy fails to account for the fact that players tend to curse on a regular basis. But outside of Colin Clarke's incident such an issue hasn't really been addressed. Why doesn't The Soccer Don go after them? Huh?) ...sorry about that. Basically the point is that kids don't need Supporters Groups to learn new words.
Putting one supporters group next to the other is a terrible idea for obvious reasons. One of those reasons is that you are taking the hardcore supporters from each club and putting them next to each other. This is a major red flag in terms of a riot starting. While some supporters might have a stand against violence, they can be completely different when under the influence of alcohol. Also, players swearing can just be a natural reaction, and not something they choose to do. What is so painful to children about hearing a player drop the "F-Bomb" when an opposing player trips him up after a sliding tackle? Are you that scared about curse words turning your child into a psychopath?
Thoma has it exactly right. It is based on the mesh and pipe support design on the sides of the stadium. We had to distort the proportions a bit to fit the supporter section but that's what it is based on. Here is a view of the east side of the stadium before they put on the mesh which makes the triangular design more apparent. The Texian Army used to have an orange-black-white checkerboard overhead that we used after goals. It would not fit in the new stadium and was getting in really bad shape. So we decided to sew up a new one and the triangles of the stadium exterior seemed to make sense. It was much harder working with triangles but I think it came out pretty well.
