So what are the chances of a press conference by the Kansas City Police Department or the Chiefs themselves causing ESPN to break away from the game today? 40, maybe 45%?
No way they would do this, not even ESPN. It will, however, be in the ticker non-stop while the game is on but that's ok. Man, I'm excited. This thread is like a ghost town though, sigh.
Also, Alexi calling L.A. a "superclub" is just laughable. Not because they aren't good or the best franchise in MLS history, but because calling any team in a parity league a superclub is just stupid.
I think the press conference would go on ESPN2 (depending on what's on) or ESPNews, with a recap at half time.
Okay, so I haven't had my traditional Serie A-fternoon nap yet. I'm banking on this coffee to keep me awake.
Was this guy even a big deal, sports-wise? The Kansas City paper didn't even have his name spelled correctly most of the day. (Not saying the murder-suicide doesn't matter, etc.)
So calling D.C. a superclub is also laughable in spite of the obscene amount of hardware they've heisted in their 18 years of existence?
I don't think this one is an example of self-unawareness. Half the time when I've heard him drop the "superclub" tag, he'll preface it by saying, "I know, I know..." before going on to defend it. In other words, he's aware how it comes off.
Yes. Isn't that clear? A "superclub" is a club like Manchester United, who have worldwide recognition, can outspend pretty much any club and are favored to finish in the top 2 in the league every single year by consensus. If people can't see the different between clubs like Juventus, Real Madrid, Barca, Man U, Chelsea, Bayern Munich...and then, L.A. Galaxy or D.C. United, then I don't know what to say. There is a clear difference between the latter and the clubs I've listed...and it has to do with salary cap. You simply can't outspend and have superiority at every position, and that's the difference.
Well, we can agree to disagree in this case. LA and DC set the standard in terms of winning titles that matter in this league and beyond, hence they would be the superclubs of this league.
Well, the role of the carnival barker is to entice people in with bombast -- not win a case in front of the Supreme Court!
It's not obscene. It's just awesome. The only thing that's obscene is the absence of new trophies in the trophy case that Erik Imler built! (Really, Erik Imler built it.)
You can't be serious. So even though D.C. has won the league championship only once in the last 13 years they are considered a "Superclub?" Come on now.. This is a parity league, and the success of teams comes and goes in waves. That's the whole point of the salary cap, and why there have been 8 different champions of this league in 16 years. Sometimes you get a nice group of players together for a few years (See D.C. 1996-1999, Houston 2006-2008, L.A. 2009-2012), and other times you are rebuilding during "off" years.
