Looking at the table LA now has 99 playoff goals heading into the Western Conference finals. Next highest teams are DC and Chicago both with 60, though DC is still alive this year.
L.A. now have 102 playoff goals after the 3-0 win over Seattle on 11/11. D.C. now take sole possession of 2nd place at 61 goals, with the lone goal scored in the 1-3 loss to Houston on the same day.
Oh yes, good catch, forgot about the goal D.C. scored against N.Y. on 11/8. The all-time table will be updated again, upon the completion of 2012 playoffs.
This thread is really good, but I wish there was some sort of AAQ ranking for teams based on things like average standing at end of regular season combined with playoff run, combined with other factors while taking into account the amount of seasons the team has been in the league, and the percentage of teams that make the playoffs with each year weighted differently based on how easy it is to get in (ex: 1998 wouldn't be weighted as heavily on making the playoffs because of ease vs. 2010-2012) or something like that. Anyway thanks for the table and good work!
Just some potentially interesting observations to share: 1. If L.A. were to win MLS Cup 2012, they will be the first championship team to do so despite having lost 2 games in regulation during the playoff campaign. Prior to 2012, the most losses suffered by a championship team was just once, even during the '96-02 era, where a team can technically lose 2 games in playoffs (once each in the 3-game series for conference semi and conference final) and still win the cup. 2. If L.A. were to lose the final, they will join Chicago Fire of 2000 as the only other finalist with the most number of losses (3) in a playoff campaign. 3. It's worth noting that each of Houston's 2 previous MLS Cup winning campaign ('06, '07) has included a regulation loss (in conference semi final), this scenario will be repeated if they win the cup in 2012, as the only team to achieve it 3 times. Curiously, the S.J. team in '01 & '03 also won the cup with 1 regulation loss in each season. 4. In 2012, L.A. and Houston have jointly set a new record for playing the most number of regular season + playoffs games in a season (40 = 34 in reg. season + 6 in playoffs). The previous record was 39, set by K.C. and Chicago in 2000 (32 in regular season + 7 in playoffs). 5. Through 2012 conference final, other than the 2 finalists, the rest of the playoff teams all had the same goal difference of -1, coincidentally: # Team P W D L GS GA "Pts" GD 1 Houston 5 3 1 1 8 4 10 +4 2 L.A. 5 3 0 2 9 5 9 +4 - - - - - - - - - - 3 Seattle 4 2 1 1 3 4 7 -1 4 D.C. 4 1 2 1 4 5 5 -1 - - - - - - - - - - 5 S.J. 2 1 0 1 2 3 3 -1 6 K.C. 2 1 0 1 1 2 3 -1 7 N.Y. 2 1 0 1 1 2 3 -1 8 RSL 2 1 0 1 0 1 3 -1 - - - - - - - - - - 9 Chicago 1 0 0 1 1 2 0 -1 10 Vancouver 1 0 0 1 1 2 0 -1 6. Seattle would have the scant consolation of finishing 3rd in MLS Playoffs 2012, ahead of D.C.
It's official: L.A. are the first MLS Cup winners with 2 losses in regulation during a playoff campaign. Houston now have equal number of "points" as Colorado, despite playing 10 season less. 4. Congrats to Vancouver for the 1st playoffs appearance, hopefully the 1st point / win will come soon. 5. Better luck to Montreal, Portland and Toronto next season...
It's playoff time!! And time for a re-look at this... As Portland and Montreal made the playoffs in 2013, TFC are left alone as the only team not to have qualified for playoffs EVER. Now we know, why TFC were so desperate to beat off Montreal in the final game of 2013, for some good/bad company,
Yes, L.A. will remain on top by all-time points through 2013 playoffs, given that: 1. The closest challengers, D.C. and Chicago, are out of the playoffs this season. 2. The maximum # of games possible are 5 (hence 15 points up for grabs) for the #1 to #3 seeds in each conference. 3. The maximum # of games possible are 6 (hence 18 points up for grabs) for the #4 to #5 seeds in each conference. 4. Base on the teams that have qualified for playoffs, none of them will be able to amass enough points to catch L.A. It's not even close...
I think some of stats are wrong, They have Vancouver 0 (GF) 1 (GA), they lost 1-2 to Los Angeles last year. And I think they gave wins to teams that should be a tie, game going into PK's count as a tie not a win (I think that's what was done).
The other team hot on the heels of D.C. & L.A. would be Houston, at 0.609... (which is still improving as they amass more wins/ties in their 2013 playoffs run) By the way, just some Playoffs Trivia to share with: Longest Winning Run: 13 (incl. SO Wins) by D.C. in 1996-98. (for @Knave ) D.C. also holds the record of 6-straight playoff wins in Regulation Time (1996-97). Longest Unbeaten Run: 13 by D.C. (1996-98) as above. The next best run should be 10, by L.A. in 2005-10. (for @Hachiko ) Longest Losing Run: 8 by Tampa Bay in 1996-00. Longest Winless Run: 9 by Colorado in 1997-02. (for @JasonMa ) Longest Run Playing the Same Team: 7 Games, Dallas vs Colorado in 2002-06. Largest Playoffs Upset: #1 Seed N.Y. eliminated by #9 Seed Houston in 2013. Previous Records: #1 Seed S.J. eliminated by #8 Seed L.A. in 2005 & 2012, #1 Seed CLB. eliminated by #8 Seed RSL. in 2009.
