19,777 in KC So far: 58,192 in MTL 21816 at ATT 19,777 in KC Average: 33,261 -- of course that's not going to hold.
As I said: that's not going to hold (Duhhhhhhhhhh) In Frisco: 12,203 Total: 111,988 Average: 27,997 And again, that will still fall off a bit.
That is more good news. Last years second game in Dallas drew 11,022. They continue to show solid progression. Both games this year individually were higher than the same two last year.
The weather has been crap all week in San Francisco. Rain everyday. Thunderstorms were forecast for today. I was gonna go to the game, but decided to wait and see how the weather turned out and decided against it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who took this approach. Really disappointing, since the game could have a exposed a lot of new people to MLS.
I don't know about expectations. But, it's about double the attendance of a full Buck Shaw Stadium. Management has said that they think its important to do games at Stanford and SF to connect to fans throughout the Bay Area. San Francisco, Palo Alto and San Jose are very provincial.
Looks to be about 10 people there. Its pretty embarrassing when your attendance is so poor you are forced to tarp off sections of the stadium in a SSS.
Yeah - I'll second that. I'd been planning to head over if the weather was passable, but on top of the unseasonable chill, near game time it started pouring - with hail no less - and my gf was having none of it. Anecdotal to be sure, but I mean, this is about as bad as sf weather EVER gets, so you really do have to account for it in the final analysis.
Yeah I think so, isn't the capacity set at 38,500 this season. I don't really get where the othe 205 people sit though so I could be wrong
For the most part, MLS has done expansion exactly right. Salt Lake, Toronto, Pac NW, Philly, and now Montreal looks like a winner as well. But Chivas has been nothing but a royal screwup since day one in every possible way. Bet Garber wishes he could take that one back.
MLS could have done better, but Chivas aren't a disaster yet. He got the expansion fee from them, so they had every right to join the league. And there is nothing indicating that they are a financial disaster either. I recall reading that AEG gave them a very favorable lease at the HDC, and that they make good sponsorship money, allowing them to operate with a lower attendance. Also, their entrance into the league got some attention from the Spanish speaking media, and possibly played a part in getting MLS back on Spanish channels. BTW I hate Chivas.
Chivas is a joke .... Rawlings should just by them and use their slot for an MLS Orlando team. and while not disastrous or anything i am surprised the RSL number wasn't higher ... home opener ... playing well ... back on possible championship form ... surprised to see a home opener that was below last year's average ... figured they be good for a near sellout for the first game.
Chivas is already down 9000 fans when compared to last years first two games. They could easily wipe out any gain we get from Houston this year.
I was thinking the same thing. That to me was much more surprising than the Chivas attendance. DC had almost as many playing in a dump and having 4 years of inept play. You have to wonder what would happen if RSL had to endure the same.
Chivas is an experiment that has failed. MLS needs to move the franchise. C'mon. Any team not named after a city is egregious. It just seems really bizarre to have called yourself "Chivas USA". Maybe "Chivas LA". "New England Revolution" and "Colorado Rapids" are bad enough but "Chivas USA"?
