the title pretty much says it all... i got the email about an hour ago.

MLS HQ and RBNY have teamed up to provide free bus transportation and a match ticket for any DCU fans wanting to attend the return leg on wednesday.

mods, if this doesnt deserve its own thread, please merge it.

For United fans, I'm guessing this is pretty close to as perfect as could be hoped for, given the series scheduling changes (which were rightly not welcomed by quiet a few United fans) in the aftermath of such a major weather event.

United fans get a weekend home playoff date and free access/transportation (if they have the time) to go see the away leg.

Absolutely stunning gesture of appreciation. Dammit! It's hard to dislike the pink cows now. Oh, wait...no it's not. :) Seriously though, big props to the league and NYRB. Way to step up!

I was really on the fence about the decision. I think this seals it. Good play by MLS!

Regardless of the transportation issues (or limits on the number of buses that MLS and RB may be funding for the 11/7 trip from DC to Harrison and back), I do wonder if RB would consider letting anyone with a ticket stub from the 11/3 match at RFK into RBA at no cost for the 11/7 return leg.

It's certainly not an ideal solution to this mess, and the bus doesn't do me much good with the closest (and last) boarding spot 45+ minutes south of me, and if we don't win the series I'm going to have a TERRIBLE Thursday, but, damn it, I'm going on the free ticket.

Anybody know when the bus would figure to get back to the area after the game? (I work north of town, so I'd probably drive to White Marsh and join the bus there.)

This is more of a gesture than a concession, but it's a nice gesture, at that. *golf clap*

Man, I don't like how Red Bull tastes, but now I feel obligated to buy at least a few cans, between this move and the Space Jump.

Here's to hoping that the potential nor'easter set to arrive on Tuesday doesn't mess things up further. S**tty luck all the way around.

Also, here's to hoping that RBA can fill their stadium for the game, even it means additional tickets for DC fans. I don't care which team you're supporting--I just want to see a loud, passionate crowd witnessing a (hopefully) entertaining game of footy.

Well that is one way to fix the attendence issues at RBA.

Why didn't they just play overtime and PK's after game #1?

Then ignore the result unless the tie is drawn after game #2.

That precisely preserves the advantage DC was supposed to get.

This thread isn't about that but, to answer you question with a question, how would you handle suspensions from the OT (either 2Y or R)? Either way you handle it is hardly fair.

Agreed, but that earlier thread is closed and locked now.

Weather events have a way of creating unique/unfair conditions for MLS and its teams to overcome. There is no perfectly fair approach, but the league could have sought out some "less unfair" approach to this series, in terms of executing a tiebreaker at RFK.

Hypothetically they could have let the coaches have access to the full roster (of some 18 healthy players) for the 30-minute OT "mini-game" and just played that after leg one. And suspensions into or out of that mini-game do not carry over or apply beyond those 30 minutes. (Although that provisional exercise and potentially unneeded tiebreaker could end up being 30 minutes of unneeded wear and tear on the players ahead of the Conf Finals and just more time on the field for potential injuries.)

Or they hypothetically could have handled it by just removing/bypassing the OT portion and doing the PK tiebreaker (as a provisional) at RFK after leg one (no matter what the 90-minute score line was).

imo, DC should be lobbying MLS ahead of Wednesday to have a (potentially) tied 180-minute series go straight to PKs (without the 30-minute OT) at RBA.

Unfair to whom? It's a unique situation, but not unbalanced.

And one could say straight reds result in suspension for game #2 (because punishment for misconduct must be immediate), and anything else carries over into the next series as it would normally should one's team advance and the OT become necessary due to the results of the tie.
