NBC also sows EPL on their Spanish outlets, even Mun2TV, not sure how big the house hold penetration is for that, but Telemundo probably does very well since they are I believe more available than UNIMAS.

Audiences for the 20 matches on ESPN/ESPN2 in 2013 — mostly on Sunday evenings — dropped 29 percent, from an average of 311,000 in 2012 to 220,000 this season. The decline comes one season after ESPN had its best MLS numbers since the league’s inception in 1996. The ratings drop-off was not as bad at NBCSN, thanks in part to hefty promotion from the network’s first season with the English Premier League, but audiences were still relatively small. Across 37 MLS games, NBCSN averaged 112,000 viewers this season, an 8 percent decrease from 2012. After the Premier League debuted on NBCSN in August, the network averaged 132,000 viewers for its MLS broadcasts. “The Premier League has proven to be a tremendous promotional platform for MLS,” said Jon Miller, president of programming for NBCSN. “Without question, MLS has received more promotion from our Premier League coverage than any sports property on NBC Sports Network.” Now that MLS has established strong attendance in most markets and has become successful enough to establish a goal of expanding to 24 teams by 2020, NBC and ESPN believe the time is right for the league to seek solutions to improve its national TV ratings. “In a very cluttered sports broadcasting landscape, sometimes it’s difficult to break through,” said Scott Guglielmino, senior vice president of programming at ESPN. “We have to find the right scheduling mix of what works for MLS from both an attendance and national TV perspective.” One possibility is flex scheduling, as NBC has with the NFL for its “Sunday Night Football” broadcasts beginning in the 11th week of the season. “We have strongly urged MLS to consider a flex-scheduling concept,” Miller said. “With good reason, MLS’s focus has been on attendance and getting local television deals. I think they know now that national television should be a priority. Hopefully, the league will work with the club owners to make something like flex scheduling a reality.” Guglielmino also was in favor of flex scheduling. “As with any sport, stories develop as you get closer to the playoffs,” Guglielmino said. “As a national broadcaster, you want to provide the fans with the most important games and best stories.” MLS traditionally has set its full national broadcast schedule at the start of the season, and those games slated for national broadcast are generally unchanged as the year progresses. MLS President Mark Abbott was unavailable at press time to discuss his reaction to the networks’ ideas. The league’s deals with NBC and ESPN expire after the 2014 season. Both Miller and Guglielmino said their networks want to extend their partnerships with the league.

*Snip for brevity* I get the impression from people I know that at the times MLS broadcasts on Saturdays, viewer fatigue has set in...I mean, you start with BPL, Serie A, etc. It goes all day long...and then at night you have MLS, where Saturday nights are typically when more people get out and about. Saturday night broadcasts are a recipe for failure in my view. MLS would be doing itself a huge favor if it could arrange to broadcast most of its games between 1-5 PM EST (while piggybacking on the BPL broadcasts). Leave a (flex) Saturday night game that you can create a lot buzz about from earlier in the day.
MLS showed small signs of life on Friday night this year on NBCSN, maybe due to a similar reason you are suggesting. I would not be shocked to see those 7 Friday night games expanded to closer to 15 games next season, if NBCSN has the room on a Friday night.
We weren't getting the weekly numbers, but I believe that SOCCER NIGHT IN AMERICA that Fox Soccer had on Fridays its last year saw some growth.
I agree that national tv shouldnt be on saturday, i think they would be doing them selfs the favor by moving it to friday nights, and leaving saturday to when they have all inner conference games. with sunday 9pm national tv game on espn I also think 1-5 aclock games is a huge failure, the players never seem up for the games, and the atmosphere is never as good. also the best of those saturday night games being the free stream of the week would be a good idea.
The Sunday night slot in the fall is a tough slot. Just too much competition to ever make a blip imo.
I actually wonder if that's why ESPN puts them there. They view MLS as a lost cause, that timeslot is a lost cause, match made in heaven.
I really hope that isn't the case. There is a significant soccer fan base out there, and the main issue is getting them to watch MLS.
I don't know if it is a case of a lost cause or just simply bottom of the barrel, which MLS basically is on the main ESPN this year. No other big sport is crazy enough to take that slot on so the niche leagues get those death spots. The only way out of the death slot is to get better ratings on a consistent basis. The ratings growth problem is going to make the attendance growth problem look like a 1 foot open net tap in.
http://sonofthebronx.blogspot.com/2013/11/espn-espn2-espnu-and-espnews-ratings.html Kind of depressing, but I think that is the 3rd week in a row that MLS finishes in last place. How many times did this occur last season? I'm pretty sure it was none. Also the ESPN FC late Sunday seems to be struggling (2nd to last place on ESPN2). Can't quite figure out any pattern with the weekday showings. Sometimes the number is okay (over 120K), and sometimes it is terrible. I notice the numbers are higher following a day or weekend with big matches (UCL or EPL). Sunday night is definitely gonna be a killer for MLS. There is just way too much competition at that time slot. If Sunday Night Football wasn't enough competition, now TWD is getting even higher ratings than SNF. Basically going against two TV juggernauts at the same time. Just those two programs pull in almost 40 million viewers every Sunday night.
MLS on ESPN is dead. They've now lost the Premier League which was a great promotion opportunity for MLS. They've lost a big chunk of USMNT which was another. They also have no Champions League anymore either. The amount of games have been only near 20 per year which alternate between ESPN and ESPN2 around a lot of different bad time slots and large gaps in between broadcasts. Other networks like NBC and FOX have been bringing their soccer portfolios into more households not to mention a niche soccer network like BeIN. 10 years ago ESPN was instinctively a network I thought of when I thought about soccer. Now unless it's a World Cup year ESPN is a complete after thought. When I set my soccer DVR recordings for the week these days I usually don't even remember to check the ESPN schedule
How did they lose the USMNT when they are still in the current contract and the new deal has not been negotitated yet for the next contract? Are you aware of something we don't know regarding negotitations?
I think he's talking about how BeIn took most of the away qualifiers while Fox has the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
I remember a time when every single USMNT qualifier was on ESPN. This past cycle I've had to watch several on PPV or BeIN. I think BeIN did Costa Rica in September, Honduras in April, Jamaica in June. The decider in first round against Guatemala was on PPV. I'm pretty sure there were more I can't remember right now
Every time I think ESPN is moving forward on soccer they back down. A couple of years ago they flirted with some La Liga games and now that's over. Their Saturday morning EPL era was short lived. Like I've said the USMNT games are getting more scarce. MLS is consistently scarce. This year they've flirted with some MFL games ... I expect them to back down from that as well. They also have Euro qualifiers in their portfolio but never show the games on the regular networks ...
Well you remember wrong, away matches for the NT have always been on PPV, close circuit or not available outside internet streams. Maybe you could watch them on Spanish TV. BeIn sports actually stepped up this year and I think for the first time all away matches were on "regular cable" TV.
