Whether those numbers are flat or not, I am encouraged that MLS can break 200k on a non ESPN channel somewhere - let alone on a channel that not all of the country has access to. Those NBCSN numbers have been depressing. I'm wondering if building a (more) sizable Spanish language audience is a lower hanging fruit than we may have realized. One of the big reasons I'm in favor of the Miami expansion are the possible synergies the team and league can get going with Univision in the back yard. I'm betting it will really boost MLS's profile and exposure on the network.
All the numbers are a bit depressing to be honest Unimas reaches 65 million households, for those that don't know.
Why depressing, MLS has the same problem on the TV ratings as the chivas usa in attandence but people Bash chivas but both have the same problem
About 20 years or so ago, baseball tried this experiment. It was called The Baseball Network. On the one hand, it obviously didn't work because baseball doesn't do that anymore. On the other hand, the television ratings game today isn't comparable to what it was back then.
The incomparable John Ourand with some new playoff numbers: - 296K for LA/RSL on ESPN - 233k for SEA/PDX on NBCSN - 158k for SEA/COL on NBCSN - 154k for HOU/MTL on NBCSN https://twitter.com/Ourand_SBJ/status/398111390235234304 https://twitter.com/Ourand_SBJ/status/398112560144076800
the NBCSN numbers are relatively nice, particularly since I think the Seattle/Colorado game was blacked out locally.
since this is basically the omnibus MLS on TV thread, Sporting KC is switching local broadcasters for next year. KC people tell me this won't make much difference (on the surface at least) http://www.kshb.com/generic/entertainment/38_the_spot_kmci/SportingKC_38thespot
Not only that but even if we had 2013 ESPND numbers we still would not be able to tell if there was an increase or decrease since we do not have any 2012 numbers. Maybe we could just say they increased 21%
Shawn Francis' twitter:SKC '14 TV deal interesting. Been hearing there may be no local #MLS b'casts in '15 to bolster value of natl. b'casts & MLS Live sales.
Then. Something ain't right, unless we see a lot of 1 year deals. Plus LA and NY (both teams) would not be very happy about this. So if LA and NY don't like it, I am thinking it won't happen.
Did anyone mention to him LA has already signed a 10 year local deal? This does not make sense for a few reasons, but I fear we are going to hear a lot of strange ideas since MLS ratings by them self are not going to drive the contract.
Here is the comparison to last years similar playoff games Game 1: 201k (CHI vs HOU) Wed 9:00pm 10/31/2012 ESPN2 Game 2: 142k (LA vs VAN) Thu 10:30pm 11/1/2012 NBCSN Game 3: 137k (SEA vs RSL) Fri Nov 2 10:00 NBCSN Game 4: 158k (DC vs NY) Sat Nov 3 7:56 NBCSN Overall this years numbers look a little better. This is a nice sign!
OK we might as well start the MLS Playoff Summary sheet for posterity sake. Looks like we are missing two games. NEvsKC on NBCSN (we should get that at SOB at end of week), and the NY HOU game on NBC (we need some help with this one) ================================================= 2013 MLS Playoff TV Ratings NBCSN Game 1: 158k (SEA vs COL) Wed 10:30pm 10/30/2013 Game 2: 154k (HOU vs MTL) Thu 8:30pm 10/31/2013 Game 3: ? On ESPN Numbers: The last 4 Sundays, ESPN's Sunday night telecast has increased in viewership incrementaly. I'm rounding the numbers, but it gives us a good idea. 196K 225K 246K and now, almost 300K I'm pretty much sure that WatchESPN is a factor, and also adding ESPND. For the playoff game RSLvLA, 50K unique stream on WatchESPN and 50k+ viewers on ESPND are reasonable numbers.
I expect a good decent number for the Thursday Night game on NBCSN, and ESPN2 might see around 350K if we are lucky. PORvRSL around 250K (NBCSN) RSLvLA around 300K-350K (ESPN2)
You're projecting a number better than we got this weekend on a weeknight against one of the most anticipated college football games of the year and a NFL game? People in this thread keep setting themselves up for disappointment...
Not to mention the Timbers match will overlap the Oregon-Stanford (which has huge local interest, obviously) game significantly.
Also some of these games were shown on local channels And the ESPN on ESPND if we could add those numbers If would be more accurate.
