It seems like the big Seattle/Portland match will have football lines. So aggravating that every time we get a good match up on TV, it is always being screwed up by something (star players getting injured, football lines, 0-0 game, going up against exceptionally strong tv competition, etc.). It just seems like MLS is always so unlucky.

The fact that you compare football lines to the rest of those things, and assume that 0-0 = screwed up, is just annoying.

The SKC vs NER match tonight has horrid NFL lines on the field. The soccer lines are virtually invisible.

Starting to wonder? That was main concern brought up with the new EPL deal.

The problem isn't local die hards. The problem is pulling in neutrals. Right now neutrals have plenty of and increasing access to the top leagues. But it's not just neutrals. Even MLS die hards here admit to not watching MLS matches not featuring their own team. If MLS diehards alone started watching more of the neutral matchups ratings would go up. If MLS diehards won't watch neutral matches in decent numbers, why would anyone expect non-MLS diehards to watch?

i'll say one reason why it's hard to get the neutrals to watch on tv...
    the lack of mainstream coverage.
to repeat what i was saying earlier, most mls customers aren't 'fans' like you find for the major sports. lots of people at the last nyrb game didn't know about the ss. it's not their fault. they're good soccer customers. but whereas anyone can tell you whether the yankees are on a winning or a losing streak, and that the ny giants started 0-6, that kind of familiarity with mls is rare. why? largely because for the other sports all you need is to catch a sport report while driving your car, or a glance at the headline in a newspaper. for mls you have to go look.
which is why moving to a different schedule won't make much difference. either you're mainstream, or you aren't. that's the key.

    Really well said.

This is a reason I think having a consistent television "home" for the league is important. NBCSN is small enough with the need for content, that I think they could make MLS mainstream on that particular network. NBCSN.....your home for all that is soccer. Something like that.

    Isn't that gol tv?

Plus all that is soccer would need La liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Liga MX, Champions league on top of what NBC already has.

I don't know that they'd literally have to carry all the league games. But yeah, highlight shows for all the top leagues would be a must wiht an anglo-american focus.

I don't know that I'd call goltv mainstream. Quite the opposite.

ESPN FC has been doing a consistently good job of covering USA and MLS soccer. I personally believe that the growth of interest in the MNT is going to start paying off with increased viewership MLS down the road. When the down the road actually occurs, who knows?

According to the article, it's actually in comparison to the 2011 season, which is "the last time the league was featured on the Univision-owned network formerly known as Telefutura."

    Here is some historical data

    1) 2012 Spanish language was on Galavision and averaged ~57k
    2) 2011 games were split between Telefutura and Galavision with the following break down

    Galavision: 18 games: 72k
    Telefutura: 12 games 233K rating

I have no idea where the 21% growth is coming from.

Sadly, it changes nothing imo. The ratings are basically flat from the 2011 games on Telefutura according to our historical numbers.

Unimas ratings almost as high as ESPN? Could this explain the drop in ESPN ratings?

What is the correlation? I don't think the ESPN and Unimas games overlap.

And the Unimas numbers are not that much different from the Telefutura numbers of 2011.

I don't know but perhaps the person who wrote the article averaged the 12 telefutura games with the 18 Galavision games and this came out to be 21% lower than this years Unimas ratings. Idk, just trying to make some sense of it.

    Something is amiss.

I believe the 229k number, as that seems just about right, but I don't know how the 21% number was calculated.
