I don't know the No Justice, No Peace slogan yellers, but I'm willing to take your word for it. That said, the 20% figure is no exaggeration for the size of the loony right, given the popularity of Palin, Newt, Trump, Rush, etc. But however we define the loony left, that surely must be a smaller figure. There is no lefty Palin, no lefty Newt, no lefty Trump, no lefty Rush. There is nobody lefty loopy who has any measure of popularity.
I tend to agree with JohnR - the loony left is very, very rare. The loony right is in the cubicle next to me looking at birther websites on his lunch break. There was an article in the NY Times Magazine about the Occupy Oakland movement as the only real anti-capitalist (objectively, not by the Republican definition) group operating. And they're led by an obscure rapper (Boots Riley of the Coup. Check him out, he's awesome) and obviously not accomplishing much. They meet in small coffee shops and bookstores and plan meager protests like trying to disrupt a single foreclosure auction. By contrast, the Tea Party recently filled the American Airlines center with willing brainwashees being trained by well known politicians and right wing operatives. Both groups are the same distance from the center, but one side of the seesaw is definitely heavier than the other.
We're now moving away from who is the stupidest to who is the most extreme (perhaps the same thing but not necessarily), but yes this is no contest whatsoever. Maybe 5% of Americans are so far to the left as to raise eyebrows in the rest of the developed world. That is, if you removed them from the U.S. and put them in Japan, Canada, Germany, wherever, they would appear to be strongly to the left in their new countries. But it's at least 20% for the right, maybe even higher than that.
15 million on the "loony" left? That seems a bit high to me. If that were the case, wouldn't the Occupy actions be getting a much bigger turnout?
Believing something, and then taking time out of your day to act on it (and for Occupy, this can be significant) are two different things completely.
Agreed with MasterShake on that, but the bigger item is no lefty Rush. There's no market for loony lefties talking to themselves & listening to themselves. Unless you call bigsoccer.com that market, and those of us on these threads loony lefties. So great, there are 23 loony lefties in the U.S.
You forgot Paul the Polish dude! Don't forget (the) Poland (contingent). #beforeITNtherewereother"IndependentCentrists" #wasitIan???
I object to the assertion that Fox News and MSNBC are analogs of one another. Just because they both have an ideological bias doesn't mean they have the same management structure, editorial rule set, and delivery method.
Re-reading her post, you're totally right. I was reading pale comparison as a comment on their viewership. Sorry, barbara!
That's sort of what I meant by "pale imitation." It's not nearly as idealogically pure or shameless as Fox. Edit: I see this was covered.
I'd just like to live in a world where the "far left" in the US was 20%. That'd move the Overton window to a pretty good place.
But Dave, you do live in that world. The President is a socialist, aggressively supported by the far left core of the Democratic party.
Another day, another reminder from Mitt Romney that he's lived a very different life from you and me: Romney tells supporters how dad got free McDonald's for life (h/t to Wonkette)

I personally have my doubts about the intelligence of people who someone wait until the last minute to decide who would be a better candidate. Although admittedly, I'm highly partisan.
