I have this in the news thread but thought it deserved it's own. What does this mean for klopas and the future of the fire? http://dailyherald.com/story/?id=412361&src=154
Curious timing. It's not yet known how Jeffries' hiring will affect the status of Klopas or coach Carlos de los Cobos. Isn't player personnel the primary part of Frank's job? Since a president was just hired and Jeffries is brought into this position, I think it might be bye, bye Frank. He may very well be a scapegoat as I think many decisions were forced on him. Clearly Martinez and Umanzor were Carlos picks. Ljungberg was all Hauptmann and from what I have heard, Castillo was above Frank as well. Oh well. You got to fire someone, right? Too bad its a great guy and R of F member. Now, before we put the broom away, there is one more carefully coiffed individual to sweep out.
Maybe Klopas or Jeffries is going to be CDLC's replacement next year. #1 Klopas remains TD and Jeffries takes over coaching the team. #2 Jeffries is going to become the new TD and Klopas takes over coaching the team. #3 Klopas is FIRED, Jeffries is new TD and they give CDLC one more year. #4 CDLC and Klopas both get FIRED.
Jefferies is going to be below Klopas on the pecking order. He'll fly around and scout players before Klopas makes the final call. If Jefferies were around last year he would have scouted Umanzor and Martinez before the Fire signed them. At least, that's how I understand things.
Why Jeffries? Can't see him as a replacement for CDLC. He does have history with the Fire, but had a rather unsuccessful time as head coach of the Burn
Agreed. I doubt the hire has much consideration of transitioning Jeffries to head coach, but maybe there is some liking to the thought he's work out as an interim coach if CDLC left prematurely to go back to El Salvador NT. I would also hope CDLC gets more time with the Fire for anyone thinking he should be gone in the offseason. It takes time. Too many managers are being scapegoated before they have the chance for success.
I had the pleasure of seeing Mike and meeting his wife last week and while he was upbeat about the possibilities of helping the club on some level, things hadn't been confirmed as of 8 days ago. That said, I think it's important to note how big this club has become below the first team. The PDL, the Academy and the Juniors; player recruiting, training, retention and for a few, signing; the possibility of returning a reserve division to MLS; and the competition for talent have made the operation of a proper MLS club very complicated. Say what you will about Mike's stint in Dallas, he's one of the good guys. He's local and he understands how the league works with regards to personnel. As of now he's an available soccer guy who would be valuable in a lot of capacities for the FIRE.
This is the BEST FIRE news I've heard all week-end. Those of you with the negative criticisms of Jeffries have no idea how good he is. This is the smartest move this club has made all season. Will they let Jeffries do his job? If so, then I'm excited as hell for next season, if not then it won't matter. FYI, Jeffries is so highly thought of in soccer circles that HE scouted teams for Bob Bradley before last summer's World Cup. I think that definitely proves he's the man for the job. Mike, welcome back!!!!! Fonsos
Considering how blatantly unprepared we were at the start of every one of those games, I'm not sure that counts as a ringing endorsement. Still, we need to do SOMETHING to stop the free fall.
Mike Jeffries has a good eye for talent and a sharp tactical mind, so I think he'll do well in a Director of Player Personnel role. He's just not a very good leader of men, which is why his head coaching tenure in Dallas did not end well.
Did you play under him or know something the rest of us don't know? I guess the same applies to Stevie Nicol in New England. Luv the blanket statements without any support to back up the comment. Fonsos
This is what was told to me by the man who hired him in 2001 and fired him in 2003. I'll go with his assessment.
Someone with international experience or who was at least familiar with our group opponents. I mean, you can't argue that we started each game with the wrong players and tactics seeing as we promptly gave up the lead in the first two games, kept Algeria in the game until the dying moments and completely screwed the pooch against Ghana. When you're relying on sheer player grit and miraculous comebacks for results, that does not speak well of your scouting and game prep now, does it?
1. Sorry for my smart ass remarks earlier. Seriously, it was spill over from a foul mood at the time. Ok, now my continued 2 cents -- LOL You bring up almost a good point but neglect the fact that scouts provide the information. Execution is solely on the players. I'll use the example of Ricardo Clark's Stupidity on another level in the Ghana match to illustrate my point. No scouting report in the world can prevent that type of stupidity. Fonsos
He did. I'm not sure how many were used to help scout. There are quite a few scouts used by Bob and prior to him Bruce used a few as well. You have to if you're gonna do it right. Fonsos
Nun, un!!! It's in West Africa Ghana West Africa -- Actually, everytime I meet a Ghananian and they say I'm from Ghana West Africa, the first thing that comes to mind is "...there's one in East Africa.." Being a smart ass knows has no boundaries Fonsos
Thanks for the insight. Edit: Btw, perhaps Jeffries will help with the reserve league team next season?
