http://www.womensprosoccer.com/Home/ny/news/press_releases/100719-stainton-promotion.aspx “We respect Pauliina a great deal and appreciate the effort she put forth for our organization,” Sky Blue FC General Manager Gerry Marrone stated. “Her hard work and passion for the team and the game were never in question. Sometimes, a situation simply does not work out. That is part of the learning process involved when it comes to professional sports. ....."
I said it already in the other topic, but glad that she is gone although I don't know Rick Stainton's abilities. Somebody else maybe knows more about him and about his training/ coach skills? I really really hope they get on fire now!
as someone here to gawk and gander, I really wonder how having a GK coach be your head coach can help you in the attack. I mean this hypothetically and not as a criticism of Stainton. I suppose they could be good at pointing out GKs weaknesses, but i'd look more for an offensive minded coach personally. ... Or Rampone.
Interview with Marrone on NJ.com “The system that (Pauliina) wanted to play didn’t necessarily align itself with the talent she had,” Marrone said. http://www.nj.com/soccer-news/index.ssf/2010/07/sky_blue_fires_its_coach_--_ag.html
My honest gut feeling is that it will work out a lot more than people think. I like the position we're in because a lot of people right now are going to be like "They're transitioning. No need to worry about them." This upcoming Philly game is where a statement is really going to be made. There's enough talent up top at a level to where the ladies don't really have to be taught offense, they just have to work together, play up to each other and get the job done. They couldn't do that before because it wasn't really allowed. I can't believe no one is talking about how good we looked in the second half of yesterday's match. The offense is there it just has to connectt.
Figures. Sports editor email - just in case anyone wants to suggest that they begin covering Sky Blue more regularly: dvanesselstyn@starledger.com >Drew Van Esselstyn commenting on the article also helps because it shows reader interest.
He has experience in a variety of coaching/mgmt positions at lower levels, including head coach. There are also quite a few good head coaches that have backgounds as keepers. One Bruce Arena comes to mind. Reading between the lines, it seems that Stainton is the players choice, which works for me
He does a weekly colume for The Ledger- mostly Red Bulls, MLS, MNT, Int'l mens. My impression is that every story on line is the same as the print edition The last story on line on SB is from Aug. '09 And it not just me: From nightrefs comment at NJ.com "Marrone has a tough job with a small staff, and I think he really cares about this team. The important thing is that the team functions well as an operation. There have been a lot of serious injuries, ups and downs and very little *PRESS COVERAGE* (ahem, nj.com) to let the public know what the team does right, week in and out. If reporters like this one would do their job and at least report on home games, it would be appreciated."
I am having a little trouble with this comment. When SB hired Paulinna at the end of last Sep., they knew and presumable were comfortable with her system/philosophy/whatever you want to call it. At the same time they had resigned/had under contract 13 players of which 10 (including two GKs) are left, including such starters as O’Reilly, Rampone, White, Averbach, Rosana, Kai. After she came on, the players signed include Koster, Kalmari, Landstrom/Panico, Lloyd, Taylor (drafted), and Fletcher and Trotter. So, a lot of the regular starters (a majority?) were given to her without concern about fitting into her system. And now Gerry is concern about going the right direction? Pick a coach and let the players follow? Unfortunately, the WPS does not have the luxury of time. And I write this as a (2) season ticket holder.
kinda agree..but the problem she has done is change the ststem week in and week out and that owuld fristrate any player i think. I know at times you change depending on who your playing but it has seem constant for 5 or 6 weeks...
FYI, if there's ever a problem with trolling/attacks, etc., the best thing to do is hit the exclamation point button on the offending post. This will alert the mods immediately. Thanks.
are you saying that it's the management's fault bc they knew what they were getting into with Pauliina, or that it was a bad coaching fit to begin with?
and now it will become interesting as Rick has no experience at any meaningful level. this team and league need credibility. can you imagine chelsea hiring 2nd division goalkeepers coach to manage the team? it will be interesting.
I would say yes to both. I have to assume management tried to learn about her, got references, interviewed her, etc., and thus knew what they were getting, and should then have realized it would be a bad fit with the core of the team.
http://www.nj.com/sports/njsports/index.ssf/2009/09/sky_blue_fc_name_pauliina_miet.html "I think we made an inspired choice. This defines what we’re trying to be and want to become.’’ - Gerry Marrone one constant thread in this is marrone. he can't afford to make another bad appointment. if he does, he should resign.
He was promoted to GM in May of 09. Ian doesn't fall under him. Lindsey was an easy choice being the AC, but she just up out of the blue quit. Christie stepped up but had a lot on her plate so quietly stepped down after the championship win. Pauliina's the second person to get fired from the job.
Of course, it does depend on how responsibilities for hiring/firing/selling sponsorships/etc divide up btwn Marrone & Hofstetter. If Marrone's been successful in the off-field part of the GM duties (ie raising good amounts of sponsorship income, hiring good ticket sales staff & increasing ticket sales, and the other business venture side of the equation) then firing him is likely not a move ownership would make--and rightly so. They won the championship last season (ie success) and if they're building their income base, that's also success/improvement. In pro sports coaches get hired/fired fairly frequently. Both Marrone & Hofstetter could be credited by some for making a move to "fix things" quickly while the team is still in 3rd. Speaking of ownership, do we really know who owns the team? And doesn't the SBFC organization include more than the WPS team? And why haven't I bothered to learn this info sooner?
If I understand right from what I was told about this a while ago, Tom (the president of SB) is what I would call the managing partner. There is also a Philip Murphy (currently US ambassador to Germany) and at least one other person with a stake.
