The problem with all this is the "deserve" part that you, admittedly, put in quotes. Personally I don't think the past predicts the future. People in Miami actually love the sport. The only question is whether they can get those people to pay attention.
They are playing the press conference highlights on the local country station now. After, growing up in Atlanta I am truly excited to be living in a market that will have an MLS team. Finally, justification for never picking a favorite MLS team to follow and call "my team"!
Orlando's entrance and Miami's return (and hopefully Tampa Bay's eventual return) into MLS solve the league's dilemna, as John Madden once said (referring to all U.S. pro sports leagues), of covering the nation's "four corners". -G
The Marlins are a joke and the Panthers are basically the Washington Generals - their only purpose is to give all the northerners who live in Broward and West Palm a chance to see their favorite team play live. Though the new ownership seems to be committed to turning them around they are basically invisible down in Miami save for maybe a billboard and the odd sighting of a Panthers license plate.
Round of applause (very scattered) for The Spice Girls mention by Becks complimenting his successful wife and family.
Univision's Fernando Fiore asking if Sir Alex Furgeson will come out of retirement to coach Team MLS Beckham, and then pimping Miami and its deserving supporters. "Southern Legion" supporters (that's a thing?) invited to the stage.
Quieter. (Not quiet.) The supporters should recognize the guys on the stage have the important message to get out today. Although, Beckham acknowledged the chanting/cheering was welcomed (and a good sign).
Likely they wisely don't want to put any unnecessary pressure on themselves or the city/county to get a stadium completed on some specific timeline, at this point.
Kudos to Beckham. In spite of the constant media teasing that his group excels at, he makes it seem all about the city. Came off as humble and charming. Not heavy handed at all.
So no time table of start date or nothing concrete about a stadium plan/financing.....what was the purpose of this announcement again?
Beckham exercised his option and went public with the negotiations and the fact that they are not looking for public subsidies for the stadium. This puts pressure on the Miami government to get its part done, because team Beckham is basically handing them a silver platter that they just need to find room for. This is the push to get over the final hurdles. I am sure we will hear more details in the next 60-90 days.
"Finding the room" is a public subsidy, especially the assembly of a parcel of land, infrastructure improvements, purchase costs and any relocation costs of current tenants or owners.
Certainly. But I'm also pretty sure she made a fair number of "mistakes" during the press conference hosting duties, and not that it really matters. Beckham suavely covered/corrected on that huge blunder by the host by noting that the supporters' noise was welcomed (at some level).
