Tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10am EST live stream of the press conference with the mayor, Garber and Beckham. Www.mlssoccer.com
That pretty much legitimize all the talk of a Wednesday MLS22 announcement of the past few days doesn't it? The announcement will be aired live tomorrow at 10AM by WTVJ the local Miami NBC affiliate.
Photo courtesy of the Miami Herald: Soccer star David Beckham arrives for an event at the Arsht Center in Miami tonight. Beckham says in an interview before tonight's invitation only event, "There's going to be a few bumps along the way, but we're going to make the team in Miami not just the best team in America, we're going to take the team global." More of the story to come.
"I really believe MLS will be back in Miami." http://www.mlssoccer.com/video/2013/09/20/ray-hudsons-miami-fusion-mls-insider-episode-11
It made the news on New Zealand radio today - Beckham gets an MLS team to start play in Miami in 2016 or 2017.
It's also global news, they were talking about this announcement on the BBC today also for obvious reasons.
Fake drama is a key piece in any PR machine. MLS/Miami/Beckham will rightly milk as much attention as they possibly can out of this.
Not apples to apples? That's apples to lunar regolith! Oakland/SF bridge requires a clearance of 200ft for a major commercial waterway and needs to be guaranteed to withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake. The pedestrian pathway is over 2 miles long and also required the demolition of other spans to be completed. It's a component for one of the biggest infrastructure projects in North American history! In contrast, looking at nautical surveys shows the waters of the Dodge island cut to be 8-30ft deep and the highway has a clearance of 60ft for low volume, small scale traffic. In fact a draw bridge currently exists that is only 20ft up. Also note that we are talking about a structure 600-1400ft long, depending on the path. Assuming there isn't any hidden obstacles i'm not aware of, and assuming they can't use any existing infrastructure, we are talking in the low millions at most. Florida has tens of thousands of such bridges, it's really not a big deal. And even if they are adding to the existing highway, it's a pretty straightforward job. It's cost is negligible in the context of the multi $billion+ development work going on in the area.
A round of applause breaks out at the mention of Don Garber's name? Certainly must have been an invitation-only event.
