Quotes from Barcelona sporting directer Andoni Zubizarreta:

"Del Bosque's list has left us speechless. This must be the first time in history that players on holiday are called.
They didn't train, there's the heat, humidity, altitude. It's impossible they can play more than 15 minutes.
Spain director Hierro called us an hour before and I couldn't say a word. The decision surprises and hurts us.
The decision has been made, it's extremely negative, but now we should see how we deal with it ahead of the Supercopa."

Sportyou quoting an unknown source (perhaps a Federation official?):

"Spain is the world champion so this can't be just a fun trip. Mexico celebrates its 200th birthday and we should respect that."

This will be only the second occasion Spain has played a friendly in Mexico.

It never crossed anyones mind that Spain would actually win it all in WC2010 when they agreed to the match?? The Spanish Super Copa needs to become a thing of the past, the timing is always lousy, no one goes to the matches because everyone in on vacation and it's 2 more matches that players have to play in a already too long season when you factor in the Liga, Copa, CL or Europa League and NT call ups!

FIFA is to blame also for selecting 11 August as a Scheduled Game day for NT's so soon after the WC.

Viva Espanha y La Furia Roja!!

Hey brothers! long time no see.
What a great 2 years, huu? We are the kings of Europe and the world.
I am loving this so much :D

My question is. Does Fifa force federations to play these friendlies?
I respect Mexico and all but I have to agree with Zubizarreta here, this is just too much on our players.

    Peace

They don't force teams to play friendlies but scheduled the international match date(s) and if the Federations want to they can scheduled matches on that date, which require teams to release players for these friendlies if selected by the NT coach. This would have been a non-issue if Spain had lost in the KO stage but with the WC win and the 30 day vacation that players have plus the super copa in Spain and a whole bunch of other things, asian Barca tour, American Madrid tour the perfect storm was brewing and has arrived.

Spain more then likely would have opted out of this match if it was against another team, but to respect Mexico's bicentennial celebration and the fact they are WC champs the cost of breaking off the match would have cost the Federation a pretty penny and embarrassment.

You can see the starting line-up and all changes here: LINK

I have to say I forgot about this game :D I missed the first half, but seeing as more of our actual first team played in the 2nd half I imagine I caught the better half of Spain. Which is reflected in the comeback to 1-1 and Silva missing a golden chance to win the game in the final minutes. I don't know why the ref didn't play on the 4th minute he called and stopped it at 48, I felt another goal was close with Mexico still trying to win the game in the end and spaces opening up for Spain.

1-1 is a score both sides can take their benefits from I imagine, now let the season start already.

Mexico deserved to win. And there was no reason to play 4 minutes. Hell, there was no reason to add more than 1 or 2. Also, game was pretty boring.
