Whether that is just a one year thing or something long-term remains unknown. 2014 is in doubt too. So how does this involve men's soccer? Any full-fledged/multisport division 1 conference that does not play football must sponsor men's basketball and two other men's team sports - soccer, baseball, volleyball, water polo, hockey, lacrosse, etc. At least seven members must have men's basketball and six play the other sports (20.02.5.2 sections a-c). I take this to mean full-members, though affiliates are acceptable. The fact that Commissioner Hurd mentions men's soccer in the media session tells me there is a legitimate chance the WAC will have to sponsor it in order to be viable. Baseball is already sponsored and no other team sport makes sense. The first thing is to ensure survival as an Olympic conference. As of right now - after the school year only Denver, New Mexico State, Idaho and Seattle will remain as full members. Boise is set to come back next year but is doing a dance to enter the Big West instead. Of those 4/5 members listed, only Idaho and New Mexico State play football (Boise FB will be in the Big East). So unless the WAC can get a minimum of six football playing schools to join they will lose their FBS status.
Sac State is a WAC affiliate member in baseball with soccer in the Big West for three years. Cal State Bakersfield (who the WAC is supposedly targeting as a full member) is a baseball affiliate with soccer to join the Pac-12. Denver is a full WAC member who plays soccer in the MPSF, no baseball. Seattle is a full WAC member who plays soccer in the MPSF. Grand Canyon University (a Division 2 school who the WAC could be targeting) plays soccer and baseball. Utah Valley (another WAC potential invitee) plays baseball in the Great West Conference. No soccer but no football, either. Unless Idaho, New Mexico State and Boise find a way to start men's soccer on their own I don't think the WAC can sponsor it without destroying/absorbing the MPSF.
