Still don't see the advantage in allowing what will essentially be unlimited away support. 38000 to 500 is a 76:1 ratio. It will only go down by opening up the stadium capacity. Why give up any advantage, why allow a louder away section. The favor won't be returned.

Well, I'm guessing someone showed up wearing Sounders gear, but they also got a lot of complaints from Timbers fans about the numbers of Sounders fans that were outside the away section, so I'd imagine they were more strict this year than last.

I think it is sad that they were kicking Sounders fans out of line.

If someone makes the effort to go get tickets at the box office, let them get tickets.

I like the away section for Supporters. But for your average fan, let them get tickets through the normal means and no need to discriminate based on what team they support.

The Sounders do not discriminate like this.

Apparently Timbers fans go insane at the sign of sight of rave green and can't be trusted to behave appropriately if a few Sounders fans are interspersed in their midst.

The entire season is sold out. There are 6k+ on the waiting list for season tickets. I think this was simply an attempt to get tickets in the hands of Portland fans. It has nothing to do with worrying about the two groups intermixing.

If the stadium was not sold out for the season, I'd bet the behavior would have been different.

I hope you sellout the Cascadia games. That would be awesome for the MLS, and killer to be a part of.

Regardless, it's a pretty douchey thing to do, but hey, what do we expect from an organization run by Paulson?

Yeah, pretty douchey move, especially as Portland continues to try and paint Seattle as the ones that are limiting traveling support. I guess thats what we get for having the better stadium though. Maybe we should invest in increasing the size of Portland's tiny field.

Whatever. Douchey is to refer to Portland as Portscum on your official web page when encouraging your fan base to drive down and buy as many tickets as possible. I'd expect this from fan ran sites, but the official page? That's weak if you ask me.

As for limiting travelling supporters, you have a much larger allocation of seats in Portland, as a percentage of total seats.

You are aware that was in the "Fan blogs" section, right?

As for the diminutive size of your stadium. We should set the number of away fans to the maximum allowed by the smallest stadium. So that's, what, 1k right now? :)

What you're refering to WAS a a FAN post that a FAN put on the FAN BLOG portion of the website. Its not like the Team sanctioned a post calling for it.

I do agree the usage of "Portscum" is douchy, but not for any reason other then I think its a terrible attempt at an insult... :p

Yes, you are right. I did not notice it was in the Fan Blogs, as I followed a link to the SoundersFc site, from somewhere else.

On the second point, I think that is what they did. Giving much more than 500, in a stadium of our size would be painful.

In relation to the second point, I LOVE the size of our stadium. Perhaps I am biased (Well, not perhaps...I am), but I enjoy the intimate feel I get from a Timbers game. I have been to Century Link, and can appreciate the grand scale of it all (Seattle....Sounders sounds big time for example), but prefer what we have. I am sure you will say the opposite, and prefer CenturyLink. Good thing we both live where we do, eh? :)

This is conveniently at the top of the screen:

You are aware that the SGs want to get 5% of each stadium's capacity set aside for away fans? 20,323 * .05 = 1016.

Your Portland fans and TA members are so quick to rush to judgment without even knowing what the ******** you are talking about. You guys put out these talking points about how it was Seattle who limited the away sections to 500 yet it is Portland who is actively trying to prevent any more away fans from attending via normal single ticket sales. Even at their walk up box office.

That says to me that Portland is afraid and will do what it can to prevent Sounders fans from coming down. It makes me think they were just as much a part of limiting the away contingents to 500 if not more so than the other teams.

That is an interesting interpretation. I am not sure anyone is afraid, but if that's what you gather from it, more power to you.

"Talking Points" aside, bring on the games!!!

Then what is the reason? I don't see any other reason than the PTFC afraid of having green dots around the stadium. Afraid that their 19,000 fans can't overcome 1,000 in rave green.

The FO is trying to put tickets in the hands of local Portland fans that would not otherwise have the opp to go to a game. Plain and simple. (Perhaps not fair to the folks that drove down, but that is the reason)

If they can fill 66k with Seattle Fans, I think they should. My guess is they will end up needing a little help from Vancouver and Portland to fill seats. I hope I am wrong. A sell out by Seattle, for an MLS regular season game would be huge.

Qwest/Clink was filled last year for an MLS match against San Jose. It doesn't take Portland or Vancouver for that to happen. Granted, the tickets were sold in packages that included Man U, NYRB and San Jose, but it happened none the less. They also didn't sell anywhere near 60,000 of those packages. They just sold cheap ass tickets at $10. I hope they charge more than $10, however. That cheapens the experience and creates a group of people who do not see the game as being any more valuable than $10. There are GREAT seats in the upper deck. You can see the play develop and thoroughly enjoy the match.

Sounder fans, just pay $50 and get on their season ticket waiting list for next season. They offer the presale to their waiting list as well as ticket holders. It's refundable and gets you a shot at tickets. If your name comes up........ buy them! They resell at 3 to 4 times face value. I have paid for my season ticket via resale and the Sounder games are free. Plus I still made enough to buy next year!

I only referred to Portland and Vancouver because these are the MLS games you announced as opening up for the full 66k...

That San Jose game was a great send off for Keller. I'd forgotten about that. I remember thinking that was cool to see so many turn out for the game. Keller is a legend. I didn't know the game was included as a pack for the international friendlies. Smart move by the FO.

I really, really, really wish people would stop making such a big deal about random away fans outside of the "away section."

This isn't Europe and it never will be. Away fans are scattered throughout the stadium at every sporting event in this country during every game. We are civilized human beings who don't need to be caged in and restricted to certain areas.
    1 people repped this.

Something surprising about that-- it was a 3 game pack of upper deck seats for $99-- NYRB, Man U, and SJ... but only 46k showed up for NYRB... so really only 10k people bought the 3 game back. The other 18k bought standalone tickets for SJ.

When you consider that is 18 THOUSAND people who bought tickets to a regular season MLS game, above and beyond the 36k regular attendees and 10k Henry/Marquez/Man U glory-hunters... that is pretty phenomenal.

Anyway, I thought JW opened up another 3k seats this year... (I remember during the renovation financing talks, the number was always supposed to be 22k capacity), but I guess none of those are being used to expand away support. Too bad. At least we know which FO is to blame now.

while that is true and heck one sees that here and there in Germany at various Bundesliga matches, that is not the point for me as I wish away supporters at all sporting events were grouped together even if they had to be provided with more seats. It makes it more like a college event where the two support bases can try to out sing, cheer, whatever amongst each other.

If a Portland vs Seattle game has a chance of reaching a 60,000 attendance then it will need massive marketing...
