Ban the players, put them in jail. Punishing the clubs does nothing. It makes the clubs look corrupt when in fact, it was individual players. You also end up punishing players that had nothing to do with the illegal actions. Atalanta had 6 points deducted for the action of one player. He did not play and the club had a good season. Without the penalty, maybe they are fighting for a spot in Europe.

Do you think these players really care about their clubs? This is an act of selfishness. They could care less of the consequences to their club. Otherwise, they would not act as they did.

Come on, man. Don't be naive. You mean to tell me that these clubs don't know what their players are getting into? You mean to tell me that no one at Atalanta knew what Doni was doing, or the executives at Bari had no idea about what was happening? It's lies and bullshit. Everybody makes a score. The ultimate goal is to make as much money as possible while not getting caught. The executives know what's going on. The players know what's going on. If ordinary people can watch games and see that something's not right with what they're watching, then the people who run the damn game and the people who have been playing the game for decades are turning a blind eye, or are simply saying, "I don't want to know what you're doing. Just don't get me involved."

In all sports, there's a locker room code. What happens in there, what's really discussed in there, stays in there. Look at Major League Baseball. A shit ton of people were on steroids, and if you weren't on it, then you knew a teammate who did it. These are your closest allies. You spend more time with them than you do your own family. You don't break the code. If anyone asks if you know anything about steroids, you tell them you know nothing and that you don't know of anyone taking them in your clubhouse. It's a code of secrecy, and it's no different than in any other locker room. You have people who are out there saying, "I was asked to fix a match, but I said no." So, you knew of someone who was going to fix a match, but you didn't bother to tell anyone? You didn't bother to call the cops? You didn't bother going to the owners? You knew something wrong was about to happen, but you just turned a blind eye? That's how sports are. You're either in on it, or you're too stupid to see it happening. One player cannot fix a match. It takes an entire team to do it. No one is in this alone, so if you're punishing one player, then you're not cleaning up the problem. You punish the clubs, and you punish them harshly, and they'll start to get the message.

If the club is in on it, yes punish the club. But prove it. If it is a player, a group of players, then punish them. If you have a problem with gangs in you neighborhood, do you punish the entire neighborhood? Punish those involved, not everyone. This does nothing to improve the game or its image. If Napoli, Lazio or Udinese did nothing wrong, then they should not be punished. Only those players involved.

So what you're saying is that if Napoli, Lazio, and Udinese players fixed games for bettors, then those clubs deserve to still play in Champions League and Europa League because the clubs didn't do anything wrong, only the players who are employed by the clubs? Might as well not do anything at all, and just keep going as is.

Yes. Suspend Cavani, Di Natale and (I can't even come up with a Lazio player's name). Ban them from the game if necessary. If the evidence shows that these were independent acts of players, then they should be punished. If it shows involvement of the clubs, then the clubs are punished as well. These players who take these bribes don't give a damn of their team or teammates. So why extend the punishment beyond the individuals involved? It will not deter their actions.

But how is that fair to the teams who had players who played by the rules and did things the right way? You have two teams, one who did things the right way the whole time, and you have one team who has been found to fix matches. You're going to reward the team who had players who broke the rules, and you're going to omit the team who did things the right way?

And that is where we have our difference in philosophy. Was it the team who fixed the results? Or was it a player or some? In some of these cases, was it the end result or the goals? Was the betting line on who won one lost or drew? Or was it 3-1 vs. 2-1? I say punish the individuals. If the other players on that team were playing by the rules but some stray cats were cheating, why punish all?

So should clubs sequester their players? Make them live lives like monks (which might not be a bad idea now that I think about it). Strict liability is idiotic but then again, we are discussing the Italian justice system.

The fixs have moved on from match odds which were becoming a joke. Odds on the draw or either win were in many cases 1.4 pre off. Many of these games in question had correct score and the Asian lines fixed. Asian line is a handicap betting on how many a team will win by, (so they get a - start) or betting on the underdog to survive the line (they get a + start)

Football is corrupt as hell. look at Fifa and all the strange dealings they have. Its needs to start at the top. Major bans for players, officals etc, long european bans for clubs and demotions down to Serie D is my suggestion. Italy needs to make a tough stance on this, no shitty appeals and reinstatements

All this news about match-fixing in Italy is just mind-boggling. You would think people would not give a second thought about getting involved in this kind of activity after what Juventus went through a few years ago. Then again, I work in the court system, so I know multiple offenders are either stupid or they think they can actually get away with things if they just do things a little bit differently than they did when they were previously caught. Of course, drug and alcohol abuse tend to cancel everything out anyway . If the Italian sporting community is really serious about cleaning up the game and making it so unattractive for owners, investors, players, referees, and fans to get involved in such shady activity, they need to hand out harsh sentences. Ban those involved for at least two years and relegate teams to Serie B and Serie C depending on the severity and quantity of the offenses. If there are enough "clean" teams in Serie B, promote them to the top flight to fill out the 20-team roster. If there aren't enough for that, let Serie A go with 16 or 18 teams if necessary.

I agree with Falc that you should not punish everyone for the bad actions of a few, but this investigation seems to be fairly widespread throughout the peninsula and involves many teams (some more than others). Thanks to Kqql for updating this board with what's going on. I love watching Serie A games. Italy is one of my ancestral homes. It's very sad to hear about what's happening there. I feel bad for the great fans who love and support their teams and the upright players who honor the jerseys they wear.

As everyone knows, I am 100% pro-Juve on Farsopoli, but if Conte comes out dirty, they should bury him. Not that I think a set-up intended to fling mud is impossible; indeed, it is probable, almost predictable. But Juve should be zero-tolerance if anything sticks.

In all this, the thing that disappoints me most is the idea of ultras fixing their own team to lose.
Ultras throwing flares, demanding that players take off the shirt... that is the right sentiment taken too far. Ultras throwing their own team's matches is the utter negation of what it means to be a fan. I'd like to believe that is a small subgroup of criminal ultras, and the other genuine ultras should beat the living shit out of them.

I wouldn't be shocked if Conte was involved. I wouldn't be shocked if anyone, anywhere was involved. There's no name out there that would surprise me. The game on the peninsula is as corrupted as it is in Asia.

As for punishment for Conte, if the prosecutors office has sufficient evidence, then Conte will have to coach the prison football team from a jail cell. I don't care if he's a Juventino who brought us the Scudetto. Anyone who fixes matches deserves to be thrown in jail for a long duration. It's time to take a stand and end this nonsense.

We can look at the positive in all this and think that historically Italy tends to do well at International tournaments when there is a scandal going.

People are aware that what's being reported today was already reported, in early April. There's nothing new to the accusations of one man here, especially when a number of his teammates say that he's lying. And one newspaper describes as a drowning man grasping for anything to hold on to.

scirea6 wrote a nice little rebuttal with some facts that have been left out here. Check it out here
