Do not see how anyone can expect us to win.

In this Yahoo Sports article, Arsene Wenger says if he were Germany coach, he wouldn't sleep well before facing the Aussies in their first match at the World Cup.

    I don't blame him.

However, I have no clue on how Joachim Löw is handling it.

It would be good for the Aussies if Löw is like many Germany fans and thinks they have nothing to worry about.

    I agree there.

However, I also cannot see how some act like Australia winning this match just simply cannot happen.

We know it MOST LIKELY won't happen, but there's always a chance........

I would rate the chances of a resulkt roughly as

    German win 60%
    Draw 30%
    Australian win 10%

I'd agree with that - maybe up to 40% Chance of a draw if Pims gets the bus parked properly, with 50% chance of a German win.

IMO if this was last WC then I would put it as

    Germany Win 60%
    Draw 10%
    Australia Win 30%

Sir Guus gave us a better chance of a win, but not as much "safety" for the draw.

I doubt Pim will be setting us up to play defensively during the world cup finals. I believe that we played more defensively during qualification due to necessity. It is a tough ask to try and get a team to perform during qualification when you only have one, maybe two, training sessions before a game. Now that the tournament is here I think that we will see a whole different ball game.

I think we will see pretty much the same system that we used under Guus in 06. The only difference is that I don't think Pim has the balls to toss the dice and throw caution to the wind in the same way that Guus did in the last WC. His squad selection doesn't seem to indicate that at least.

Australia press them out of the game, dominate possession, score 3 goals and Germany nick two on the counter...;)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Germany but Australia win this one 3 - 2. :D

Guus had us playing stuff like this:

    ------------Schwarz
    Emerton--Moore---Neill---Chippers
    Culina-------Grella------Wilkshire
    ---------Bresciano----
    -------Viduka-----Kewell

    and this:

------He Who Shall Not Be Named
    ------Neill---Moore--Chipperfield
    --Emerton-----Grella-------Sterjovski
    ----Culina-----Cahill------Kewell
    --------------Viduka

Worlds away from Pim's locked in 4-2-3-1.

While it's true his methods are not that different from Verbeek's and Verbeek will aim to play a more expansive game than in the qualifiers we don't have anything like the squad to play like Guus' Roos, even if Pim was that way inclined.

Firstly, Hiddink had a centre forward who could hold up, lay off and finish - Verbeek has a beanpole who can head the odd one in. This means our gameplan in the opening phases is a lot more kinetic and one dimensional, as Kennedy can't recieve possession from deep the way Viduka could and so rather than score from stretching defenses with forward interplay we're now set up to pick up 2nd balls from crosses and dead ball situations.

Secondly Hiddink had a variety of attacking options like Aloisi, Cahill, Bresciano and the beanpole who he could throw on when plan A wasn't working. Pim's plan B, where we sit deeper and break with pace rests on younger, unproven players and after that there aren't any more rabbits in the hat.

Please.. can we try to be realistic (talking about your style of play)? Your team can't play attacking football against big teams, that is the reason why you will play probably as defensive as Poland did with Germany 4 years ago hoping with a break or two get a goal out 2-3 chances. Unless Germany scores first and early turning it into an all out attacking behemoth, I do not expect Australia to attack this match much if it at all.

You might be surprised there. We normally play pretty high up and will aim to compress the field and break up your play. Our plan A is to dominate posession and put in crosses to the tall, Christlike forehead of Joshua Kennedy.

So, your plan is to steal midfield possession from guys who clearly had the possession in the CL final? Good luck :D

I'm not going to be surprised at all. I expected the same vs Poland 4 years ago and the same is happening again with Australia. If they were to play very far up the pitch, this match will end in a disaster for your team. I'm certain your coach is not naive.

The cockiness of some germans is really disgusting. I hope the australia fans know that the major part of germans, who aren´t just casual football fans, think that it´s going to be a hard match against Australia. I rate them very high.
    (I am german).

I can see this being 0-0 or 1-0 with a late goal to either team. Australia has to play defensive and put Kewell on with 20 minutes to go and hopefully snag a goal on the counter or from a set piece. The wingers from Germany can be exploited as can the centre backs, unfortunately Kennedy's strength is also Mertesacker's strength which helps Germany. I am hoping Rukavytsya starts but I can't see it happening.
