I hate to say it, but if he gives the red he is the story after the game. We've already said he might be the lowest "ranked" ref in the tournament. Once he becomes the center of attention after the game, it probably eliminates any chance of a knockout stage appointment.

the poster LAW5 is always reminding us to referee the game the way the players expect it to be called. And on this level, the deliberate handling in the center of the field is a yellow. If it had been red, it would have been met with indignation and revolt. Yellow was the right call.

We have now gone 12 games without a major referee controversy. is this a record? And can we chalk it up to these officials being the best int he world at their craft and we are not having to deal with crews from lesser soccer countries (much like we get at the WC?)?

I'm not gonna nit pick your math, nor will I question whether the first 2YC of the tourney counts as a major controversy, but I was having the same thought.

I have had the marvellous (and for me, unique) opportunity to see about 80% of the play live so far. It stuns me how professional ALL the participants have been. Great stuff.

While I think this was a DOGSO, I can see where the CR did not.
But if he believed it was a DOGSO, and didn't call it for the reasons you suggest, I hope he never refs another game.
