Very interesting article on Bresc in the Sydney Morning Herald, by Michael Lynch.

EVER since he was a youngster learning his trade at Carlton in the old National Soccer League, Mark Bresciano had one desire - to play for a big club in Italy's elite Serie A. The attacking midfielder has achieved his aim, but the sleaze, corruption, match-fixing and violence seemingly endemic in Italian football is destroying that dream - so much so that he is contemplating leaving Italy...........

but the standard of players and attention is much higher in the epl you must admit. it is the biggest soccer competition in the world (apart from champions league, world cup).

    Confirmed

Socceroos midfielder Mark Bresciano has sealed a move from Serie A side Palermo to English Premier League club Manchester City.

Bresciano, 27, becomes the ninth signing of new City coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's reign at the club with the transfer, reportedly worth $A7.2 million.

"I needed this move to freshen me up," Bresciano told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"I needed a new challenge and I wanted to get the excitement factor back into my game."

Bresciano, who penned a four-year deal with the club, joins a host of Socceroos stars in the Premier League including Mark Viduka (Newcastle), Tim Cahill (Everton), Harry Kewell (Liverpool), Brett Emerton (Blackburn), Lucas Neill (West Ham) and Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough)

Bresciano spent eight seasons in Italy playing for Empoli, Parma and Palermo and said the chance to play under Eriksson, a former coach of Serie A side Lazio, was a huge incentive.

"He's a big reason I've decided to switch to a new competition - he was very keen to make it happen," Bresciano said.

I think it will be interesting to see how he fits into the team.

Petrov & Elano are perharps as good or better wing options, Which leaves him as the CM/AM (AM we have Stephen Ireland/Geovanni) but we are really lacking in CM, with the great options of ... Dieter Haaman & Ousmane Dabo.

whats this!! apparently may not be moving now! thats devestating for both him and man city if he doesnt.

MARK Bresciano's $10 million move to Manchester City has been put on hold after his Italian club blocked the switch.
Serie A side Palermo have insisted they see all the money from the transfer this month, but City were reportedly hoping to pay up in September instead.............

I agree, Spain would definately be better. I really wish to see the flow more the other way, to be honest. Though it's great to have around a dozen players or so in Premier League teams, I'd love to see atleast half that in leagues like Serie A and La Liga. And even guys who are struggling to get games in Premier League teams, like Fulham's Ahmad Elrich, making the move to French Ligue 1 or Germany's Bundesliga.

BTW Spain is widely considered the Best League in Europe guys. Italy still considered a close 2nd and England 3rd, despite England's gains and financial clout, though England does gain on Italy, especially with all the scandals Italy has had and subsequent sale of top line players, like Shevshenko.

Agreed. It's the standard of play which counts. And there's enough exposure for a player, if he's playing in any of the Big 5 leagues. NT coaches get tapes etc... An educated and experienced coach knows the quality of the leagues.

Yeah, it's improved and probably gains on Italy's Serie A, especially in light of what I mentioned above. There's no doubting the EPL's growing financial clout. It's a leader in that area. But in regards to playing standard it still lags behind, especially to Spain.

Spain is still clearly #1. The performances of their teams in Europe and the fact they still draw and produce most of the world's top players shows at World Cups etc... There are natural cultural advantages they have, which means they'll likely be #1 for quite a while yet. England has adapted and changed, becoming more European over time, though I doubt England can be adaptable enough in such a way, it can draw the legions of South Americans Spain does. England also largely does not have the appealing weather, Spain does.

And because of England's leading the football world in financial growth, the other big leagues, Serie A and especially la Liga, see what's required and lift their marketing game. Clubs like Barca and Madrid profits continue to grow big time, reinforcing their status as two of the World's biggest clubs/Football Brands, alongside the likes of Man U. And other strong clubs in la Liga like Valencia and Sevilla are no slouches and I'm sure are increasing their profit margins too, especially to compete with Barca and Real.

Oh what a shame :p . Man City would certainly be a great move, in a good time in his career. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind seeing him spending a couple seasons in the EPL. Just at this time of his career, approaching his late 20s, so his prime, It would be awesome if he could go to Spain. Even a move up to the likes of Juve or Roma would be great for him, getting high level Champions League games and playing in teams challenging for the Serie A title.

BTW Spain's La Liga is still the unconquered league for us Aussies. Not to say we've necessarily conquered Serie A, though a couple more Aussies in there and one could say as much. And John Aloisi has been the Trailblazer as he's been throughout his career. But he may be leaving the league. If he leaves the league or not though, I'd love to see him with some company in the La Liga. Too bad Lucas Neill couldn't make a move to Barca, instead of West Ham :p .

Palermo eyeing Man City striker Vassell

Palermo are eyeing Manchester City striker Darius Vassell.
The England international is expected to be made available by City boss Sven Goran Eriksson as he continues his squad overhaul this summer. Tgcom says Palermo are keen to discuss Vassell's situation, which could lead to a breakthrough over stalled negotiations for Mark Bresciano, who has seen a move to City break down this week.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find many people outside Italy who think Serie A is stronger than the Premier League right now. AT WORST the Premier League is 2nd behind La Liga, and even that is highly debatable.

England has 4 of the top 8 ranked teams in Europe, compared to 2 each from Spain and Italy, and with all of the money pouring into the league, more and more top players are joining English teams. English clubs also have 6 Champions League semi final appearances in the last 3 years, compared to 3 from Italy and 2 from Spain and there were also more players from the Premier League at the last World Cup than any other league in the world.

As for the South American issue, money talks. This summer alone has seen 4 Brazilian internationals move to England (Anderson, Alex, Elano and Lucas), with another set to join them if Alves completes his move to Chelsea. We also saw key Argentinian internationals arriving last summer, with Tevez and Mascherano joining West Ham, before moving on to Man Utd and Liverpool respectively. Also, many of the top prospects in South America are being snapped up by English teams (Anderson is a Brazilian international at 19, Denilson was included in a recent Brazil squad at 19, Lucas is in the next Brazil squad at 20 and before that was captain of the Brazilian u20 team, Insua is was an important player for Argentina at the u20 World Cup and has already played in the league for Liverpool at 18 etc).

The financial gap between the Premier League and everyone else is only going to get wider. Barcelona and Madrid will maintain their position as European super powers, but the rest of La Liga will be left lagging behind financially. At this point, teams like Manchester City and West Ham are able to outspend all but the top 2 clubs in Spain, and Sevilla, who came 3rd last season and won 2 trophies, are about to lose their best player to Chelsea.

Lucas Neill had the chance to go to Liverpool, who have a greater European pedigree than Barcelona, but West Ham are paying him ridiculously high wages that no other club in Europe would have been prepared to match (another reason why English teams will continue to attract top players, the wagers are higher than in any other country).

    Bresciano scores on Palermo return

Aussie midfielder Mark Bresciano was back in action for Palermo yesterday.
Bresciano's move to Manchester City collapsed last week and in his first appearance since returning from England, he scored in Palermo's 3-2 friendly victory over little Italo San Marco

I wish his future could be settled soon. Alot of people say he is better off in Serie A, but as far as i'm concerned, if he's not happy, he's obviously not better off there. Manchester City are a team that's going places & i for one, would like to see him be a part of it.

I wonder if West Ham will try to swoop for him under Sven's nose? They've been widely tipped to make an offer for him recently.

I saw a 5 minute interview on Marco Bresciano last night on The World Game.

He seems very unsettled in Italy, very keen to get out and doesn't have the heart to play there anymore.
What also surprised me was his seeming lack of interest in travelling so much to Asia for the WC Qualifiers and he didn't seem like the only one to feel that way. Little wonder we did that poorly in the Asian Cup 2007.

Disappointed to hear that as we have a real chance to get throught to WC now with qualifiers against weaker opposition than before but we could struggle if some of the Socceroos feel this way.

No wonder he wants out, with all the problems the sport has there, and not to mention teams seldom play to win. Its clearly the 3rd best league behind La Liga and EPL. Dont know how many Serie A games you watch, but ive seen enough to know its not nearly near the standard of the EPL.

Yet most years the Champions League winner comes from Italy.

Italy has the strongest club teams in World Football.
