MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact announced on Thursday that the club has reached an agreement with Italian forward Marco Di Vaio, who will become the club’s first Designated Player in Major League Soccer. He will officially join the club pending receipt of his international transfer certificate (ITC), when the MLS secondary transfer window opens on June 27. As per MLS and club policy, details of the deal were not disclosed.

The Italian forward will arrive in Montreal on Sunday with his family, and will be presented at a press conference on Monday, May 28. Di Vaio just recently completed his season in Serie A with Bologna. He will join the Impact on June 16, and will be available once the transfer window opens on June 27. The club will work to make him available for his first game that day versus Toronto FC.

    The club's first Designated Player
Di Vaio, 35, is one of the greatest goal scorers in the history of first division soccer in Italy, with 142 goals in 342 games played in Serie A, with Lazio, Bari, Salernitana, Parma, Juventus, Genoa and most recently Bologna, for the last four seasons.

Hope he scores a ton of goals. The service is there we just need someone who can bang them in/create a moment of brilliance than can win a game.

Congratulations on signing Di Vaio! I have watched him play since his days at Parma and Juve, he has always scored important goals, and works really hard.
Hope he does well for you in MLS, except when you play against Vancouver ;)

With this signing, I think Montreal has the oldest average player age. Hope it works.

It's going to be really nice watching DiVaio play with Wenger. The little he's played Wenger looks really good and now that he has a coach, Wenger is gonna make the U.S. national team one day... Now they have to find a mentor for Filipe at midfield (a Seedorf or other). With also Valentine at defense and looking solid, this team is starting to have a nice mix of youth and veterans.

Joe Cole still has a few years left in the EPL. He is either staying with Liverpool or is going to West Ham.

Not sure if this was posted elsewhere, but how can an Italian court they ban Di Vaio legally from playing in the MLS? I'm sure Montreal could easily sue FIFA or whomever because they can't legally in an international court prevent him from earning a living can they?

very happy for him, he looked like a different player yesterday, not giving up on play as he often did since coming to Montreal... he didn't steal that goal yesterday, he deserved it.

Di Vaio marks Nesta's Impact debut w/ long-awaited goal

MONTREAL – Alessandro Nesta’s timing on the soccer field is world-renowned. On Saturday, it became clear that that his timing in life is outstanding as well.
In his first game in MLS since joining the Montreal Impact, the legendary Italian center back was on the field to witness to his friend Marco Di Vaio’s first goal in the league, which had been a long time coming.

Even though there are maybe only 10 games left, that is still 30 points in the standings to be gained. The Impact are only 5 points from a playoff spot and 10 points from a place in the conference semifinals. If I were every other MLS club, especially in the east, I'd start looking over my shoulder. Auguri Di Vaio e Nesta!

They've played more games than anybody so points behind is a bit misleading. It's all about what they do on the road. They can't make it without some road wins. Let's see what's ahead..

At this point the teams just above us are CLB, DC and CHI .. PHI and NE are just below .. we play all these teams at least once.

    August

    Philly home.. need this
NE away .. a steal here would be important because then Impact have
    SJ home after short rest
DC home .. they can be very good, or very bad..

    September
CLB away .. not easy but we seem to match up well with them
CHI away .. 2nd away game in a row (need one win, either CLB or CHI)
KC home .. had luck with them

    October

HOU away ... wouldn't count on this one
    TOR away ... easy 3 .. :D
NE home .. not a bad way to end season

Anyway, I think if they got on a roll, it's very possible.. MLS is like that. String some wins together, and whoosh!. They are playing the teams they have to pass. But if they stay in a win one, lose one, draw one sort of pattern, ie, win at home, lose on the road, then forget it..
