starts today with first leg vs Ellsborg of Sweden at home. Return leg is next thursday.

Ballardini should put out an attacking lineup going for goals today...

great start, up 2-0 at HT..Kolarov, Zarate have the goals.
Cribari out of the doghouse to start in defense, Cruz up front for Rocchi who I guess is being rested for the league opener..

great win. with 4 games in 10 days Ballardini said after this win he is rotating the squad a bit and thats why foggia and rocchi didnt play. I bet you'll see those 2 and diakite for cribari in the lineup sunday.

opening match in group play today vs Salzburg at home, 3 pts is a must.

Ballardini is again rotating the team a bit, Bizarri in goal...Megni out of the woods back in midfield, Radu in for Kolarov..

Shaky defense rears its ugly head.

Just wow, my two favorite club teams manage to lose to "Red Bull" teams in the same year. -_____-

    I ********ing hate Red Bull.

    lotito doesnt get it:

    http://www.football-italia.net/sep18k.html

those were comical errors by CBs that we've know for a long time are not good enough.

Diakite has some potential for sure, he was good vs Juve. Cribari, Siviglia, these aren't quality defenders and losses like this and vs Juve will continue to happen.

I wish to never be reminded of this game again. I swear every Lazio game i can write paragraphs on and this particular game i would just lose it. Foggia Diakite were the best players on the field. I can count more Lazio defensive error goals commited than the opposing team tactically scoring. Its Lazio who do it to themselves and Salzburg were the ones lucky to get the presents that day.

A great game and the whole team played well. This is the Lazio I was waiting for the whole season, we really were on our game and the travelling fans really helped out Lazio as we picked up 3 precious away points. Foggia is too damn good and his presence on the pitch when he was subbed on was a huge boost in offensive quality and set up 2 of the goals.

Villareal look so weak when we compare this away game to Villareal home game to Sofia. Villareal won it late at home while Lazio smashed Sofia. Lazio should have won Salzburg with ease and Salzburg won Villareal 2-0. This group is getting a little tricky to qualify out of the group stages.

I was at this game, totally shocking. The team played a flat 1st half (credit to Salzburg playing a good road half), were dominant in the opening 30 minutes of the 2nd (could have scored 4 goals in 10 minutes) and were incredibly unlucky to give up those two goals. I must say the crowd really abandoned the team after the 1st Salzburg goal and really led to an anxious final 10 minutes which eventually ended in nightmarish fashion. The fans were singing at the top of their lungs until the goal which than led to the fans being over anxious every time a player touched the ball.

Foggia was the MOM regardless of the score, his presence totally tirned the game on its head and with a bit more ambition for goal he could be dominant on a consistant basis.

The defense is weak especially down the middle, Cribari error is inexcusable, Diakite is solid but he doesn't play the ball too well out of defense and usually resorts to desperation clearances.

Nice to see the squad rebounded with a nice 4-0 drubbing on the road, 4pts from Villareal, should see us through.

must win today at home vs villareal. Foggia from the start in this one, Bizarri will be in goal...lets see if our defense can avoid the comical blunders.

This ref is absolutely financially involved with Villareal. He is a complete and utter disgrace, and I sympathize with any Lazio fan right now. You lads got hustled by a crooked referee.

the refs helped us in firenze a few wks back, it happens...

1-1 with less than 10 to go. Zarate has the goal, Matuzalem 2 YCs so down a man keeping the draw is decent now.

Huge win, the stream cut out in the last 5 mins but Lazio were attacking well with 10 men towards the end of the game. Zarate was a threat every time he had the ball, Radu, Lichsteiner and Kolarov played well Cribari was ok. Baronio battled well, Foggia kept possesion, one of the few Lazio Mids that can do that, he's a must start every game. Lazio needed that, now a draw in Villareal should put us in great position, and if Salzburg win their next match they might be able to clinch before we play them.

thats right, we goto villareal in nov before salzburg. Foggia always makes a difference, no one understands why he doesn't start week in and week out.

to me the most amazing thing of the season is Baronio's progression, its like he's finally becoming the player he was tipped to be 10 yrs ago...he gets a 6.5 today from goal.com:

wow i got home to watch the final half hour and it was very entertaining. First off what a piece of sh!t that ref was. I must have witnessed atleast 3 very incorrect calls in that half hour I seen, he should not even ref for a childrens game.

anyways we knicked out beating La Liga's worse team 2-1 and it really got me worried. Tomasso Rocchi came to the rescue but he has to stop shooting those shots where his body is not square to the net nor is he looking at the net. They cost us a few golden opportunities so far this year. Nevertheless, Capitano has come through when relied upon.

I am very happy with the 3 points and I hope we can progress very deep in this tournament. As Pasquale Foggia had said, Lazio is a team built more for tournaments.

tough one today at villareal, who seems to finally have come to life.
probable formations, seems Balla is finally ready to give Eliseu a chance and youth team standout Perpetuini another start.

VILLAREAL (4-4-2): Diego Lopez; Angel, Gonzalo, Marcano, Capdevila; Cani, Bruno, Eguren, Pires; Rossi, Nilmar.
    All. Ernesto Valverde

LAZIO (4-2-3-1): Bizzarri; Lichtsteiner, Cribari, Siviglia, Radu; Perpetuini, Baronio;Foggia, Mauri, Eliseu; Zarate.
    All. Davide Ballardini

My stream was a little choppy so thought it was 1-0 Villareal with Foggia lining up the PK, he smashed it off the bar and now I see the blurred stream wrote 3-0! This team is in shambles right now, and the line up was poor. Villareal have been leaking goals, we went with a defensive line up eventhough Villareal are missing Marcos Senna their best defensive mid, force guys like Pires and Capedevilla to play defense, their too skilled on the wings to consistantly come out our weak defense.

This is predictable after going down 1-0 & a man within the first 5 min, in a difficult stadium to play in, one that has taken many big Euro sides as casualties.

well the 4th minute baronio red card didnt help....I dont mind the lineup so much as I mind the roster is so thin...its funny how Lotito and Ballardini keep compaling about having to play every 3 days and the roster cant handle it when its their own mess...

This german ref was amoungst the scum of professional referees. Baronio didn't even touch Nilmar and he gets a red card. The ref didn't even see what hapend how can he call it? That german ref knows that the german league may take one of Italy's european entries so he did all he could do dictate the game for Spains Villareal. That f###ing bastard. The game should have been much closer than what it was. When Zarate and Kolarov came on when it was 10v10 Lazio were the superior and that is how the game should have been with 11 a side. The ref must have been confused to playing a poker game, he was just generously handing out cards to Lazio. Even a 3-2 loss would see Lazio in second in away goals.

Yeah, you'd think Lotito would have learned from crashing out of the Champions League a few years ago....:(

Our hope to salvage an otherwise dismal season. Slzburg were incredibly fortunate the first time around and not getting any points in that game has really made qualifying a mess. A win may turn the season around somewhat, Salzburg aren't an attacking force and were fortunate to beat a poor Levski squad 1-0 off a throw in in the 93rd and they were even fortunate in the reverse fixture against Levski winning 1-0 in Sofia. Really this team is very beatable and having attended the previous meeting between these teams, Lazio are the better team and if they play like they did in the early portions of the 2nd half of that game they should claim all 3 points.

It's a must win because I have no doubts that Villareal will rip Salzburg on matchday 6, tbh Levski have a better chance of knocking off Villareal.

    Lineups:
S.S. Lazio (5-1-3-1?) 4-5-1 with Kolarov on the wing?
    86 Fernando Muslera
    2 Stephan Lichtsteiner
    5 Stefano Mauri
    7 Eliseu
    10 Mauro Zárate
    11 Aleksandar Kolarov

    9 Tommaso Rocchi
    18 Stephen Makinwa
    23 Mourad Meghni
    42 Federico Sevieri
    52 Alessio Luciani
    Coach
    Davide Ballardini

    FC Salzburg
    1 Eddie Gustafsson
    5 Rabiou Afolabi

Correction Lazio's lineup looks like this: (3-4-1-2)

    Diakhite-Cribari-Radu
    Lichsteiner-Brocchi-Foggia-Kolarov
    Mauri
    Zarate-Eliseau

Interesting lineup, this could be a hihg scoring affair.
