In another thread, a group of BS posters discovered that Landon Donovan actually has 49 assists with the USMNT (rather than the 48 attributed to him by US Soccer). To see the full documentation of this, and how we discovered it, you can check out this thread: https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/goto/post?id=25905588#post-25905588 Below is a video showing all 49 assists. The table below lists all 49 assists as well as the date, opponent, score at the time of the assist, final score, venue, and competition. Also, if you have the ability to bring this to the attention of US Soccer, please do so. I'd love to see someone official either tell us where our mistake is, or update their official statistics.
Isn't his assist against Norway in dispute? Isn't that the game that Norway insists was a "B" friendly and the USMNT insists was an "A" friendly? Something like that anyway.......................
That might be it, as I think the January (non-FIFA date) game one week earlier which featured Adu entering late vs Canada was also a game that had its status ("A" or "B") come into question. http://www.ussoccer.com/Teams/US-Men/Lineups/2006-Lineups.aspx
The total number of assists for 2006 in this video and in the USSF press guide match one another. The discrepancy seems to be in 2004. From another thread:
I want to bump this thread again. With Donovan likely to get (at least) one assist in the next week, can someone who has contact with USSF (maybe Jeff Bradley) and find out why all of the assists in the video above do not count as official.
What the hell, this isn't the 1930s. They (USSoccer? FIFA? ESPN/NBC?) need to get this sorted ASAP, before Donovan reaches 50G/50A and makes history...
I understand that. Watch the video, follow all the links, and see if you can figure out which of the 49 assists in the video is not being counted by USSF. So far no one I've talked to has been able to figure this out.
Why must you constantly be such a curmudgeon? Ghosting is asking a legit question, seems to have no ulterior motives at all: it appears that LD does indeed have an assist that is not being counted and he's just asking if anyone has any ideas why not? Sheesh, dude. Give it a rest sometime, huh?
It's worth noting that sometimes USSF can be inconsistent on the assist count. Against Brazil in 2012, Thiago Silva deflects Fabian Johnson's cross to Herculez Gomez, but Fabian is still given the assist. http://www.ussoccer.com/news/mens-national-team/2012/05/us-mnt-falls-to-brazil-at-fedexfield.aspx Meanwhile, Brek Shea is not given an assist for his cross which was put away by Bedoya last night. http://www.ussoccer.com/news/mens-national-team/2013/07/usa-routs-guatemala-in-san-diego.aspx
I never understood ignoring people. I like the free market of ideas. It is a good place to be in. I dont need people to just confirm my ideas or feel comfortable. I think that makes people weak. It good to be tested. You have a question and it seems evident that one of the ones in that video does not count in USSF eyes. Simple enough. I will never ignore anyone on here. It is antithetical to free speech and discourse and to the free market of ideas.
Yeah... but if you look at the official match reports from the posts above, you'll see that every assist in the video is listed as an assist in the match report. The discrepancy is in 2004, (USSF says 5 assists and I have six) and the links to all six match reports are in this post: https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/...-has-49-assists-not-48.1974840/#post-26605968
Then what is the conclusion from this information? The best explanation is that one of these assists was taken away at some point.
What is the earliest printed reference anyone can find of Donovan's official assist total? Couple thoughts: * It would be pretty odd if the Poland friendly didn't count as an 'A' match. Almost 40,000 people were at that game. http://web.archive.org/web/20040712011603/http://www.ussoccer.com/ * That one was a straightforward corner-kick-to-head, no conceivable dispute whether it was an assist.
I guess the other possibility is that the assist to Cobi Jones in the Panama match was somehow ruled to NOT be an assist after the fact. In the video (#14) it's hard to tell exactly what happened on that ball, but it looks like Donovan missed the ball with his right foot and then hit it with his left to Jones.
If we trust the stats in this link, then the uncredited assist is narrowed down to the Jamaica/Panama/ElSalvador qualifiers. I suspect that Ghosting is right about it being the Panama one, although it'd certainly be nice to get official confirmation of that. Speaking of confusion over assists, I don't understand why Shea didn't get one for Bedoya's goal against Guatemala.
