I could have sworn we had a thread on this here...must have been over on the LARS boards.

Anyway, nice preseason tune up. Guess this means they've sorted out the Champs Cup match for the end of Feb as well.

Thought we'd also discussed this one as the rumor has been around for a couple months now.

OK - so we are playing a warm up tournament. I would like an honest show of hands as to how many of us have ever heard of any of the other teams in this tournament other than SJ? This is not quite the FIFA CLub Championship or the Toyota Cup.

Oh come on now....who hasn't heard of the European powerhouse that is Torpedo Moscow?

Now, if we were playing Locamotiv that would be something else again.

Ipswich knocked Torpedo out of the UEFA Cup last year. Yeah, I've heard of them....almost when to Moscow for the away leg. ;)

Well, here's a breakdown of the opposition. The Norwegian teams we'll be playing finished 3rd and 6th in the Norwegian league, not far behind Rosenborg Trondheim who has always (besides perhaps this year) been a big hit in the Champions League. San Jose will get to play them.

Torpedo Moskau finished fourth in the Russian league, which doesn't sound that bad either.

These teams will be at pretty much the same starting point as our guys considering their northern latitudes require their seasons to more coincide with ours.

I for one am quite excited to see how we do, even though I know preseason is about trying everyone out and not necessarily going for the win.

The team who always finishes better than Naaarwich. Must be something to do with Delia Smiths cooking as the budgie scum always manage to fall apart midseason....pass that on to your friend. ;)

Torpedo Moscow is a strong team...as mentioned earlier, they finished 4th in the Russian Premier League, and acquitted themselves very well vs. the top 3 (drawing 2:2 & losing 0:1 vs. Lokomotiv Moscow, splitting the season series with CSKA Moscow & Spartak Moscow). Loko, as you know, is currently in the 2nd group stage of the Champions League (the draw vs. Real Madrid in Spain was one of teh better results for a Russian side in Euro competition), and CSKA are the defending Russian Cup champs -- actually, CSKA & Loko tied for the points total at the end of the season last year, with Loko winning in a "golden game" tiebreaker 1:0. So Torpedo is no creampuff.

Torpedo is expected once again to challenge for a UEFA Cup slot, especially since last year's experience left a bitter taste; they got a little over-confident vs. Ipswich.

This will be the 2nd training session for Torpedo (many Russian clubs train in Spain) and as the Russian season will start in mid-March, this will be the final-lead up to the start of the RPL season.

Thanks very much for this insight. Unfortunately we get very little access to Russian league matches on our television, and even less to the Norwegian clubs. Consequently, this is really an unkown level of competition.

I think Viking was the team that knocked Chelsea out of the UEFA Cup.

    Re: Re: La Manga

I really did come to this thread for a reason...

I read on the Wizards boards that their matches in SA will be televised. Are these matches going to be on any local stations? KCAL? KCOP? Fox Sports West? Surely if the Wizards can get their matches on TV Los Angeles should....

    Re: Re: Re: La Manga

No LAG press release has addressed this, and I would be surprised if the games were available. We have never seen any of the pre-season games on TV before. I did a search of the DirecTV upcoming schedule and nothing shows and Oscar Tse has not listed anything. Best bet: no TV.

    Umm, almost true.

As I recall One of the Galaxy's preseason games in Argentina a few years ago was shown live on Fox World Espanol(?) - or another obscure Hispanic staion carried by Adelphia cable.

    Someone help me out here....
