Wrong! You obviously failed reading comprehension. I said, "La Liga will start next season atop the UEFA coefficients. The 5-year country coefficient at the beginning of next season will be:" 2007/2008 is dropped at the beginning of next season which is in July/August (3 months from now). So the 5-year country coefficient at the beginning of next season will be: la liga 70.311 epl 66.410 Glad to see someone who has reading comprehension skills.
Err Until the 2013 season is over, England is still ahead. What if England gets more points in 2013? Then your point is mute. That's like saying I have won the lottery as soon as my numbers come in.
And at the beginning of next season Osasuna will be tied with Real Madrid in La Liga table, both with 0 points. I mean, you are technically correct but what you are saying is pretty meaningless. It's the end of the season that counts.
Serie A used to be #1 in the 80s and 90s. La liga was #1 from the late 90s to the late 2000s. In the modern era, The EPL has ONLY been #1 for the past 4 years. http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/country/season=2007/index.html Overall, the league that has been #1 the most number of times is La liga with a total of 15 years. The epl follows with 14. After this season however, the epl will finally catch up.
It's not the same thing because at the beginning of the La Liga season all teams start out with 0 points. The 5-year UEFA coefficients are, well, based on five years. So every season, all leagues start out with data from the previous 4 years. So he's right.
1 - at the start of the thread it said la liga was now no1 in the rankings, it isnt. the premiership still is. 2- the prem was tied with spain for number of no1 slots. but, as we are guaranteed to end this year in no1 slot, it is now 16 to 15 to the prem. 3- next year hasnt started. we usually go clear of la liga by a few points at the start of the european season, so by november there should only be 1 points difference between the two. hopefully the premiership sides do better next year and we can keep our no1 slot, but that is not exactly certain.
to be honest, i think the time for dominating the rankings may be coming to a close. germany might stagnate, spain might collapse, the english might continue to defend like idiots, one could be dominant or all could fail, but the chances are that the three will converge more or less and it will be a toing and froing for first to third over the next 10 years. i dont see italy, portugal, france, russia or anyone else getting much of a look in for the top 3 slots.
Despite a 52% increase in TV revenue in the next 4 years, Germany won't reach second place anytime soon. There are few clubs who can keep onto their stars. Mönchengladbach has allready lost 3 important players and even Dortmund with 2 consecutive titles lost Sahin last year and probably Kagawa in this season. And both teams are pretty low seeded, too.
they are definitely doing better in the coefficient, and have matched england 2 out of the last 3 years. they have had a top 3 coefficient in 3 out of 5 seasons, and not been out of the top 4 in any year.
This all really makes me think that the day draws closer when the big European clubs decide enough is enough and force their European Super League into reality.
I'm pretty sure that the EPL is now tied with La Liga with 15 number 1 slots once the 2011-12 season is over. The wikipedia article regarding this was updated recently to reflect his since it is impossible for La Liga to get the number 1 slot by the end of the 2011-12 season.
bugger. i was using wiki and dint realise it was updated already. oh well , spain starts next season in no1 so is the incumbent for the '16'. i think the superleague idea makes a lot of sense for some but none for others. a major problem would have arisen in the last few years , because barcelona would have been the only club in europe with anything to play for. how long would this be allowed to stand? juve, ac, inter, real, bayern, utd, chelsea, city, arsenal etc, with absolutly nothing to play for from february to august? also, in terms of the long term health of european football, look at italys collapse in recent years.thankfully for football in italy, they can see the strength of other leagues and will try to regain their place at the top. a league wide malaise will be arrested and reversed. if there was only 1 league and a problem arises, were all ********ed.
As a fan of an elite club, Manchester United, I don't want a superleague. It would deprive Wigan Athletic of chances to beat Manchester United and Arsenal like they recently did.
What I'd like to see at the end of the season is a mini superleague of 6 teams playing home and away games (10 games). The whole thing would take 5 weeks playing mid-week and weekend games. 2 teams from the top league based on coefficients. 2 teams from the 2nd best league 1 team from the 3rd best league 1 team from 4th best league so for example one season we could have Real Madrid Barcelona Man Utd Man City Bayern Munich Milan
I wasn't arguing about the merits of such a super league when I mentioned it. I merely stated that I feel the possibility of such a thing is steadily growing, particularly if the major clubs feel that the current league structure is no longer allowing them further growth.
English league used to be number 1 in the 70s - mid 80s right up until all their clubs were banned from Europe. Before any foreigners entered the big leagues and the money explosion. That's the only thing the EPL had to catch up on. Money and getting the best players. But that's been evident over the past decade. Not four years.
Exactly. England actually won more European Cups than Italy in the 80's AND the 70's. 1979-1980 Nottingam Forest 1980-1981- Liverpool 1981-1982 - Aston Villa 1983-1984 Liverpool Italy 1984-1985 Juventus 1988-1989 Ac Milan 1989-1990 Ac Milan Italy wasn't No:1 Until England was banned
If we're basing this on the UEFA coefficients, England was only number 1 in 1985 despite having won the Champions Cup seven out of the previous eight years. The Bundesliga was number 1 from 1976-1984. England most likely would've topped the list for the rest of the 80s and perhaps into the 90s had it not been for the ban. Fwiw, England topped the list from 1966-1975.
plus, the uefa coefficients, all those semis finals, finals etc are all nice trinkets, damn nice ones, but i would still like the premiership win the most cups, and la liga still has this firmly locked up and will do for the foreseeable. so even if we do go ahead of them in the no1 ranking stuff, they are stilll the benchmark for silverware.
la liga is shit now; spl south. I know the epl is pretty bad but la liga is unwatchable now. Serie A and bundesliga all the way.
a funny little silverware related statistic I like: different winners EC/CL: ENG: 4 (Liverpool, ManU, Forest, Villa) ITA: 3 (Milan, Inter, Juve) GER 3: (Bayern, Dortmund, HSV) NED:3 (Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord) ESP: 2 (Real, Barcelona) different winners CL, EL, CWC: ENG: 11 (Liverpool, ManU, Forest, Villa, Tottenham, Ipswich, Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham, ManCity, Everton) GER: 8 (Bayern, Dortmund, HSV, Gladbach, Frankfurt, Leverkusen, Schalke, Werder, [Magdeburg]) ITA: 7 (Milan, Inter, Juve, Parma, Napoli, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Lazio) ESP: 6 (Real, Barca, Sevilla, Atlético, Valencia, Zaragoza)
