Xavi will almost certainly not play against Valencia this weekend. He hopes to be ready for the game against Atletico Madrid #fcblive [rac1]

If Xavi is indeed out, Alves and Masch suspended, and Villa, Affelay, Fontas on long term injuries (am I forgetting anyone else?).

Adriano limped off but hopefully he can go. Iniesta and Pedro rounding into shape. Pique back from his discipline or whatever that was. Keita back and a bit rested post Africa. So we have:

GK: 100% - VV (& Pinto on bench)

D: OK if Adriano can go: Adriano-Pique-Puyol-Abidal; if no Adriano I'd love to see Montoya get a game at RB, alternatively Bartra could play CB and Puyol could move out wide to RB. Really don't want to see Sergi B play CB (Keita at DM).

MF: Still pretty great albeit never the same w/o Xavi. Cesc-Busquets-Iniesta could start, Keita back, Thiago too.

F: Messi, Alexis & either Pedro, Cuenca, or Tello (or Cesc moving up). I still have much faith in Pedro's value but I'll admit I want to see Tello start with Messi and Alexis.

Hopefully the team plays with attitude despite the hopeless situation. Would like to see Tello, Cuenca etc. getting lots of minutes during the rest of the season, also Pedro who needs to start remembering how good he is.

EDIT: lol wth is with that Alexis pic at the beginning of the thread, Batman? Haha.
    1 people repped this.

I think I read somewhere that Pique was left out because of the fact that we had suspensions in defense and Pep didn't want to risk injury to Pique midweek. I have a feeling that it was a benching/wake up call/protect us for the league match. Who knows? You know what's funny, we've played Valencia 3 times in what 3.5 weeks, but no one makes a big deal about it. Valencia is quality. I'm still mad they lost to Chelsea in the group stages.

Think Messi needs a deserved rest; if Piquè cant play Bartra in, Montoya 4 Dani and Cuenca or Tello 4 Messi.......Visca el Barça!!!!!!

I remember a barcastuff tweet in our last Valencia game saying they have always lost in Camp Nou ever since Unai Emery became coach. That's reassuring, but it's hard to keep a good team down.

I hope the spectre of a pasillo in el Clasico keeps our guys motivated to compete in La Liga. I feel like we've just gone through the dip that happens in every season and are crawling out. Somehow LPB haven't hit a rough patch yet, except for a couple games in the fall vs. Levante and Racing, but they're due for a major CL bug after their trip to Moscow. I don't think La Liga is within reach, but there's still chances to keep pressure on them, and for our own sakes, play ourselves back into top form.

Messi certainly deserves rest - he has more Liga minutes than any player in the entire Liga including goalies. However, Messi will start and play the entire game. We are not giving up completely on La Liga just yet, much less to a quality team like Valencia.

In other game news, the club welcomed Keita back to much applause and Affelay returned to doing specific training on grass for the first time also to great applause from the team. Here's the latest on Adriano, Sergi B and Xavi plus the reservists:

Sergio Busquets, with a knee injury, and Adriano, who was substituted as a precaution on Tuesday with pain in his left leg, have done specific work, while Xavi worked on his recovery in the gym. Completing the group were four players from the reserves: defenders Montoya, Bartra, and Muniesa and forward Tello. Dos Santos and Sergi Roberto, recently regulars in the training sessions of the first team, trained with the B team on Thursday.

^ Agree. Messi can rest next mid-week. Can't afford to rest him against Valencia when Xavi is already out.

Also, you don't want to think this way but its realistic: lots of tourists go to Nou Camp on the weekend for their one chance to see Messi live. So ...yeah, he's starting all home weekend matches unless and until La Liga is 100% decided.

Exactly what I want to see as well- assuming Adriano and Sergi can go; if neither can go then:

[LINEUP-4-3-3]Tello, Messi, Sánchez, Iniesta, KEITA, Fàbregas, Abidal, Puyol, Pique, MONTOYA, Valdés[/LINEUP-4-3-3]

Put Thiago in for Iniesta, and Pedro in for anyone to ease Iniesta's and Pedro's respective returns to full fitness. If Sergi B can start bring Keita on for him.

i really want to see more of montoya, but i can't see montoya playing this one, not against valencia. in both of our recent meetings with valencia dani has been benched, or played as a forward, with puyol playing RB because valencia's combo of alba and mathieu has been their biggest threat. so i think puyol will play on the right again.

so, if adriano is available i would expect him to start on the left:

    ----adriano----abidal----pique-----puyol-----

if adriano is not available we will have to do a little shuffling because i can't see pep fielding any B-team players against the third best team in the league. i wouldn't be surprised to see sergio play in defense with either keita or thiago taking his place in midfield:

    --------------------keita/thiago------------------
    ----abidal-------sergio------pique------puyol----

other option would be to switch to a back three, with sergio dropping back when necessary, and count on dominating with the home-field advantage(a risky gamble with xavi missing):

    ---------------------sergio------------------
    ----abidal-----------pique----------puyol----

If you see Montoya, it will be with Alves as a forward on the same side.

Seems fit, but it seems he's fallen behind Tello in the pecking order. Can't say I blame Pep if that's the case, he seems to be lacking confidence in his last handful of appearances. I'd reckon either Pedro or Cesc starts aside Messi and Alexis.

Really? I think he's actually been stepping up , his last games specially on CdR vs Valencia was brilliant on Mestalla.

Hopefully both gets playing time though, Tello can create a lot of damage with his speed also.

Xavi, Adriano and Busquets have trained with the group normally today. They are fit to participate tomorrow.

Xavi should probably rest but it would be cool to see him out there at some point with 2 or 3 kids (Tello, Cuenca, Sergi R?) so they could get some big game reps with the Maestro mentoring them. If we're not going full throttle in liga and all that.
