That doesn't look like a colossal mistake, unless you factor in the fact that he probably never justified the 5 million pound bid then. Besides they needed to play it safe in the attacking dept as they got rid of their best striker, and with Fletcher's injury history. The fact that Ji failed so badly at Sunderland and couldn't continue his the development that Sunderland projected is not down to Di Fanti. Maybe it is the fault of Di Canio or Ji himself, but never Di Fanti. The fact that Dortmund would probably not pay 5 million even in the January window shows what they think of Ji now.

#safc team to play @SouthamptonFC: Mannone, Bardsley, Alonso, Ki, Brown, O'Shea (C), Cattermole, Larsson, Johnson, Borini, Altidore.— Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) January 18, 2014
So... SAFC has forgotten how to play football. Possession must be around 90-10 to Southhampton.. Ki not getting any of the ball either. Only useful thing he did so far is disposes and then get fouled for a fk. EDIT: very nearly 2-0 were it not for a LCY-esque shot on goal.. defence whole team getting torn apart.
Sunderland is lucky they are only down by 1 goal. Still can't figure out why Borini isn't playing centrally through the middle for Sunderland.... far better option as starting CF over Jozy or Fletcher right now. His tireless work-rate alone is an upgrade over both
Sunderland playing piss poor, KSY just as bad. Dunno how the second half is going to shape up though. Poyet kept shouting to Ki from the 7th minute to go forward but all he did was just stand around.
The whole team is playing poorly except for Johnson and Borini and KSY isn't putting in a shift. At one point all three of the midfielders just jogged back, inviting the pressure all the way to the 18 yard box w/o challenge. Ki just keeps running up to his man and waits in front of him until he passes. So frustrating to watch
Yeah, Sunderland's first half was really lacking something. It seems like they talked it over during the break.
Altidore off (surprise!) Ki gets the "second assist" I suppose. Just looking (albeit too hard) for a bright spot.
