It took balls to name the stadium "Livestrong Park".

edit: you've got to be nuts to dislike that name

So essentially, the team forgoes a sponsor, and instead chooses to donate part of every matchday's revenue to Livestrong. Is this a sign that the team is very confident in being profitable this year?

So is Lance still being investigated? If so what happens if he is found guilty. This seems like an odd move given the recent controversy surrounding the face of livestrong.

Props to KC and the league for what looks to be some outstanding corporate responsibility.

It's actually a pretty shrewd move. Livestrong is a pretty well known organisation so this will get out the word about the new stadium and Sporting Kansas City to many people who may never heard of them.

Livestrong Sporting Park is trending nationally on twitter. I think Soccer has come a long way.

This is a great move by SKC.

This could be one of the biggest marketing coups in MLS history. plus, they help fight cancer.

Lance's issues have no impact on this. It's a partnership with the LIVESTRONG ORGANIZATION, not just Lance himself..The organization has done nothing but good.

Going the Barca/UNICEF route? It's a good move PR wise, hopefully it pays of financially for the team too.

Re: Kansas City sells naming rights to Lance Armstrong's Livestrong Foundation

So....I'm just a caveman....is the idea that the attachment of Livestrong to the stadium and the Wizards will mean more press, and more fans at soccer games and thus more money?

What's the appeal of foregoing a more traditional sponsorship in which they receive a couple million a year?

Seems like a revolutionary new approach to stadium naming, so I'm just trying to puzzle out the ideas at play.

    Someone help me out?

Re: Kansas City sells naming rights to Lance Armstrong's Livestrong Foundation

Barcelona set the standard with their UNICEF partnership; however, financial hardships have forced even "morally" elevated teams like Barcelona to sell themselves (see Qatar Foundation).

Essentially, you send a message to your fans and the press that your goal is to not only win by fielding a successful team, but to use philanthropy as a way of marketing it across the world.

Wow. Bold move by SKC. I would love to see the details of the deal. Lance is seemingly a complete douche but can't argue with good of the foundation.

True- and in today's social media dominated marketing universe, having Livestrong foundation and, by connection, Lance Armstrong in your corner is just about 3 Million twitter followers who just heard about Sporting KC, possibly for the first time.

Has anyone heard if Livestrong will also be on the jerseys or will SKC still be looking for a jersey sponsor?

Probably should change the headline to "Kansas City donates naming rights to Lance Armstrong's Livestrong Foundation".

Good job SKC. This move certainly elevates the brand in my eyes.
