Have any of you ever actually been to Toronto or Canada?????
    I suspect not

Nobody in Toronto cares about soccer (football).
    Although that is slowly changing

I dunno what game Guzman is playing but I can almost guarantee you he made up his mind a long time ago.
Just like I made up mine which country I'd represent given the same position.

I recognize that it's not a case of bending the rules to make him eligible; certainly someone who lives for most of the year in Holland for like 9 years as Jonathan did should be eligible for citizenship if other people are eligible by the same criteria. But any country can have whatever citizenship-gaining process that they like, and that doesn't mean that FIFA might not be authorized to step in and say "hey, you have loose citizenship rules in general, we can't do anything about that, but we can step in and say that people in de Guzman's situation have to meet other criteria that we set to be eligible to play for Holland." Otherwise, the way I see it this sets a precedent for youth to go train in academies in wealthy countries and be made naturalized citizens; whether it happens within the context of routine citizenship naturalization procedures doesn't matter; lets say a country passes legislation to offer naturalized citizenship to everyone who spends a year living there, it may be a consistent rule, but that doesn't mean that young footballers who spend a year at such an academy should be eligible to represent that country.

Turkey already has that rule and if you don´t have a link(father, marriage, etc) you need to live there 2 years before you can represent that country

There is no guarantee that Canada will qualify for the Olympics. I think our regions qualifies begin this month or next.

umm...i'll assume you've been to canada like 30 yrs ago. soccer is slowly growing, you're right, but in places like montreal, vancouver, calgary, edmonton and especially toronto its booming. i've been to holland, loved it, but know theres more to sports there than just football and speedskating.

as for JDG it would make everything much easier if he just made a decision sooner rather than later. i agree with some of you that if he was capped by the dutch nat'l team, when its all said and done he'll have only a handful of caps, whereas canada could really use his talent alongside his bro in the midfield.

it will be interesting to see how this works out...

Agreed, but he may be delusional about his own talents, perhaps the thinks in his own mind he's good enough for Oranje.

I'm far from convinced he is however

I've seen 1 as well but in that game he was spectacular. My opinion hold no value then. *walks away*

i just dont think hes quality enough to play for oranje. i mean, look at kuyt, sure hes not getting much PT @ 'pool, but hes miles better than JDG2 and not in van bastens lineup. i'm sure his bro julian's gotta be disappointed about this, shame

Nope, AFAIK thats wrong, Canada received total independence and I dont think a Canadian can just pack up and move to England.
I'm 99% sure of that, but I could be wrong

I'm lucky I have dual passports, I can move back to Holland anytime

the whole 'announcement' thing was false, basically the host of the show had an interview and asked him about his thoughts, but he didnt commit one way or the other. its was lame. so as it stands he has yet to make a decision officially....if only he was as smart as his bro, lol

and yes, canada has been an independent country for 140 years now....the queen means absolutely nothing here, just a figure head

Not right now. He's in danger of becoming one of those 'eternal talents', i.e. long recognised as a massive talent but never really capitalises on said talent.

he officially choose for Holland the second he got his passport, today.

    http://www2.sportsnet.ca/blogs/gerry_dobson/2008/02/06/goodbye_to_de_guzman/
    http://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/story/2008/02/06/de-guzman-netherlands.html

He came onto our tv screens not 4 days ago and told us he hasn't made up his mind and it will be a tough decision but he has no set time limit.

Now he says in an interview, he made up his mind a few weeks ago (roughly the same time he recorded that interview that was just shown)

Having him officially choose the millisecond he gets his passport means he pretty much was always just waiting for it. He stared into that camera on national tv speaking to his people and lied to them... flat out lied to us.

You don't play for a federation... you play for the country, the flag... the city you spend every summer when you come "home"

Now he's yours, and your his people enjoy

    ....f*ck him

I really hope that he never gets capped. He's a pathetic human being. Can't say I'm surprised though, this outcome basically defines what it's like to be a Canadian soccer fan.

I hope the Dutch FA remember that we liberated Holland from the Nazis before they decide to bring him into the team. I'd like to think that they can do a better job to repay us than giving de Guzman an orange career to the torture of Canadians.
