17/06/1977 --- Badajoz 1-5 Barcelona [Friendly competition] Headline: “Barcelona into the final of the Iberico” “Brilliant reappearances of Cruyff and Rexach. They were the stars in the second half.” “Badajoz was only a sparring” Goals were scored for Barcelona by Asensi, Rexach, Albaladejo (twice), and Cruyff from the penalty spot. Cruyff assisted Albaladejo once and played 80 minutes because Michels wanted to reserve him for the final. Michels: "It was a comfortable win" Summary: 1 goal (penalty), 1 assist
678. 16/10/1983 --- Feyenoord – PSV 1:1 Attendance: 33000 Goalscorers: Zhelyazkov Season: 1983/1984 Headline: Feyenoord stays on top The draw was a good result: Feyenoord stayed on top of the table with a one point advantage over Ajax, PSV and Roda. Gullit started the match as libero but played as extra attacker in the final 30 minutes when PSV looked vulnerable. Cruijff was "mostly invisible" but also kept "two men occupied". Captain Wijnstekers complained a day later however that Cruijff was not as "dominant any more as in the beginning of this season." Zhelyazkov scored in the 13th minute, assisted by Vermeulen. Koolhof levelled with a header in the 27th minute, the cross (assist) was provided by Berry van Aerle. Both sides had problems with injuries and suspensions so both were uncertain about how the match would unfold. Hence, Feyenoord was happy with the result and PSV was happy that they did not concede more goals.
679. 19/10/1983 --- Tottenham Hotspur (ENG) – Feyenoord 4:2 [1] [EC-3, 2nd rnd] Attendance: 36000 Goalscorers: Cruijff, Nielsen Season: 1983/1984 Headline: Hoddle the great man Hoddle was the man of the match, Tottenham manager Burkinshaw called him "extraterrestrial" and signalled that it was one of his best matches. Hoddle had two assists and was involved in all four goals. After 39 minutes, it was 4:0. Feyenoord manager Libregts made a mistake to tie Cruijff to Hoddle. Cruijff looked forward to this prestigious battle but admitted afterwards that he was "not 25 years any more" and acknowledged the mistake. Cruijff complimented Hoddle afterwards and swapped shirts. Libregts also admitted that he knew about "the aggressiveness, mentality and physicality of the English but the difference was way too big. And yes, then they have also a man like Hoddle to provide the finesse." "At times, an extra man appeared free. It was not only about Hoddle, but as specialist he used it as the best." Cruijff complained about the tactics and said: "Tottenham had always a man surplus on midfield. Besides, the marking was too loosely applied, the injured Gullit played too far ahead of his defence. And we were too polite and soft for the opponent. Too well-behaved. They won deserved and Hoddle was fantastic." At half time a few things were changed: Stafleu came in the field for striker Houtman. Stafleu marked Hoddle in the second half and did that better than Cruijff - Hoddle was not as effective any more. Van Til replaced Gullit, who was not fit before the match started and was deemed as a liability by the coach. It benefited the game of Feyenoord and Tottenham manager Burtinshaw said: "We could not keep the situation under control in the second half, now they still have some hope." Cruijff played for the remainder as attacking midfielder/second-striker, a role that suited him better. He even managed to score a goal - assist Duut. Nielsen scored the other, assist Vermeulen. Reports also unanimously condemned the rough treatment by the English, for example Roberts on Cruijff, but Cruijff himself said this time: "No, it is the other way around, we were too kind this time. You cannot afford that. The press complains often that our [Dutch] league has become more and more defensive but that is a general development in football. We have to understand that it is also the case on the European scene." Elsewhere he elaborated on this: "I do not mean that it was easier to play - or score a goal - 10 years ago, I cannot count the number of times I was injured in an European match, really. I mean that the general approach of the game has become more defensive and reactive, as default/standard tactic of teams, also on the European stage. Generally speaking, of course." http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=SSoaKXbiHvM#t=138s
Brief highlights of the match against DS79 on 20/11/1983. Cruijff assisted the winning goal in the 87th minute, header by Gullit. Cruijff did not play well according to the reports, he was continuously shadowed. But I was still able to find a few notable moments (I did not include all of them though). First 'assist' was an offside goal, and did not count either, but I included it nevertheless because it was a fine cross with his weak left foot.
Before the second leg against Tottenham played Feyenoord on 30/10/1983 a league match against Excelsior. Cruijff scored two goals in a 4:0 win. Video with the two goals has been posted before.
I will continue. For the one who are interested, around that period, in November 1984, shortly after his retirement, he cited Platini and Tigana as his favorite footballers. I have a Spanish source for that: http://hemeroteca.mundodeportivo.com/preview/1984/04/12/pagina-6/1122828/pdf.html He called the name Platini too in August 1983.
682. 02/11/1983 --- Feyenoord – Tottenham Hotspur (ENG) 0:2 [EC-3, 2nd rnd] Attendance: 45000 Goalscorers: N/A Season: 1983/1984 Headline: Tottenham plays modern football Feyenoord had a few excuses available such as the suspension of sweeper Van de Korput and the injury problems of Gullit as well as a private drama for Vermeulen, who was subbed out after just 30 minutes. Before the match, riots took place, which were reminiscent of the ones at the 1974 UEFA Cup final. It resulted in a heart attack of the father of Vermeulen, who was watching in the stands. More general, it resulted in exactly 33 wounded supporters, among them were 11 heavily wounded and fighting for their lives in the hospital. Other than that, Tottenham played a good counter-attacking game and won thanks to two goals of Hughton (24th) and Galvin (85th). Cruijff commented afterwards that they had "found a good compromise, balance between size and technique. It is almost impossible to have both but their well-tuned balance between body and technique is admirable." One thing was sure after this game though and that was that Tottenham became for once and for all another arch-enemy. That their Hooligans bragged about "helping their Jewish brothers of Amsterdam" did not help too, to put it mildly.
19/06/1977 --- Barcelona 3-0 Ferencvaros [Friendly] Headline: “Barcelona shined like in the old days, won the friendly Iberico tournament” Barcelona played a good game and always had the edge over their opponent. “Carlos Rexach shined scoring 2 goals (one from a PK) and played a complete game.” Clares scored the other goal off a rebound. “This time Cruyff did not shine as in the previous match.” “Neeskens was excellent.” Michels: “This is the team that I want.” Dolnki: “We fell to a great opponent.”
That was the last game of Barcelona and Cruyff in the 76/77 season. I will soon give a statistical summary of every match.

There is one more season to go with Cruyff at Barcelona, but due to the fact that I will be going away in a few weeks, I will have to continue after the New Year since I will be unavailable until then.
I did not recall Cruijff gave praise to any SA player ... for never believed in flashy and tricks! But this is his quote on Pele : “I can be a new Di Stefano, but I can’t be a new Pelé. He is the one that goes beyond the limits of logic.”
Pelé said in March 1982: "There is only one Beethoven, but there have been other good composers. There is only one Muhammed Ali, but there are other good boxers. Maradona is a great player, maybe the best of his generation. But he is different than Pelé. I played my first match for Brazil at the age of 16." In this case Cruijff took issues with Pelé and defended Maradona. Cruijff said, when he was asked for his opinion: "It is true that Pelé did unbelievable things but Maradona can do irreplaceable things too, things that cannot performed or copied by anyone else. Just as Pelé had his moves." So he did give praise to South-American players!
Where did you read that quote by the way? It is possible he has said that because in his eyes Pelé resembles of all greats the most technically perfect player he ever saw (but the perfect technique does not exist!) and he admired his skills. But he always took issues with the notion that Pelé is superior to everybody else. Thank you for the stats. He obviously scored more goals than in 75/76 but interestingly his assists were more or less the same (11 versus 13). A difference is that he won in 76/77 the 'player of the year' award while in 75/76 he was not even in the top 20 of Don Balon. As we talked about previously, he was in the top 5 of El Mundo Deportivo in 75/76 though - an about similar rank as Maradona in his best Barcelona year. You mentioned his age (despite his healed knee); around that time also his smoking habits worsened. He smoked 20-30 cigarettes a day. His mother said to the press: "He is under intense pressure you know. Barcelona is a city he fell in love with but the life around football is not easy. It is one of his ways to level down the mental stress and reach a stage of relaxation." It was anyhow noticed that his smoking habits increased with the years. He himself said when it became known that he won the second edition of the 'player of the year' award: "I prefer a championship."

Last comment before I continue with Feyenoord season: if we combine everything together then we have so far these assists: - 82 assists for Barcelona in 73-77 years - 26 assists for the national team - 27 assists against Dutch top five sides (incomplete for 64-67) - 18 assists in European matches for Ajax - 10 in international friendlies for Ajax (incomplete) - 2 further assists in Cup finals (against non top five opponents) - 6 further assists in his 81/82 season verified (8 in total with matches against top sides included) In total 171 assists known. According to an NASL fan website he had 37 assists in the NASL too http://www.nasljerseys.com/Players/C/Cruyff.Johan.htm So that makes 208 assists, if true.
06/11/1983 --- Sparta – Feyenoord 1:4 Attendance: 20000 Goalscorers: Vermeulen, Hoekstra (2), Houtman Season: 1983/1984 Headline: Fantastic Cruijff leads Feyenoord to a win Feyenoord captain Wijnstekers said afterwards: "This is the Cruijff we know from the months August and September." Sparta captain Van Gaal said: "In this state he is very hard to play against. Remarkable is the light-footedness he has at the age of 36, and the acceleration at the first five meters as a result of that." As the commentator in the highlights noticed, Sparta was in extensive phases the equal side. Crucial were the changes in the 58th minute: Van de Korput fell out with an injury and was replaced by Houtman. It had as result that Gullit moved towards the defense while striker Houtman became the third forward. The goal came in the 60th minute: cross Zhelyazkov, Houtman occupies two defenders and Vermeulen heads in. 0:1 Then the 77th minute: Cruijff passes to Troost, who makes a cross to Hoekstra. 0:2 (see video) In the 88th minute started Cruijff another attack which ended 30 second later in a handball. De Wolf caused the penalty kick after a cross by Vermeulen. Houtman scored the PK. 0:3. In the 90th minute another goal by Hoekstra (see video). 0:4. Troost caused a free-kick deep in injury time. Van Gaal took it and Lengkeek headed in the 1:4. Brief highlights:
Brief highlights of the league match against Willem II on 04/12/1983 I included a few random moments I liked
11/01/1984 - Glasgow Rangers - Feyenoord 3:3 [friendly] During the winter break played Feyenoord one international friendly. Glasgow came 2:0 ahead on Ibrox Park but Carbo (Club Brugge loaned him out to Feyenoord for the remainder of the season) and Gullit scored two goals before half-time. Williamson and Redford were the scorers of the first two goals in the game. Cruijff used this friendly to play as center-forward in the second half and scored the 2:3. But Prytz made 3:3 which took the game surprisingly and unexpectedly to penalty kicks. Feyenoord won the penalty shoot-out with 7-6. Notable event: Cruijff did not take one. The attendance was higher than expected, which was according to some related to the presence of Cruijff on the field. Assisters are unknown/unclear. Summary: 1 goal
