His playing time has tapered off since the winter break...he is obtaining a degree at a local business school where he's set to graduate very soon so he's probably got a lot going on. Nonetheless I'm a bit surprised that we haven't heard the USSF being more involved in his recruitment despite them being "aware" of him since he's only 19 and played a decent amount of Bundesliga minutes at a position we really need help in (LB). It does look like he got an extension with Hoffenheim until 2018. A source within U.S. Soccer confirmed to ASN that they are "aware" of Toljan and his progress. But for now any talk of him switching to play for the United States is moot since Toljan is happy playing for Germany. He did, however, leave the door slightly ajar in the future. “For me this question never occurred,” Toljan said. “I enjoy playing for the youth teams of the German federation. I guess the possibility is given, but I never heard anything of any other federation." - Sciaretta's article: http://www.google.com/search?q=jeremy toljan&{google:assistedQueryStats}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}{google:searchClient}{google:sourceId}{google:instantExtendedEnabledParameter}ie=UTF-8
In addition to what @ckl26 said, Toljan isn't good enough for the USMNT yet. Within Germany, there's speculation that Green might actually be good enough to start or supper-sub for a 1 Bundesliga team. Toljan on the other hand, has had that opportunity and probably wasn't ready for it. I think Green is Bundesliga ready as is, while Toljan will take another year to really get up to speed. Funny enough, I think Hoffenheim is one of the prime candidates for a Julian Green loan or sale. They'll be losing Volland this summer and a few teams are still showing in interested in Firmino. They'll be looking to reinforce their attack this summer.
Yup, and totally agree. With that said, I'd maybe like to see a little more effort on the USSF's behalf after this cycle...Toljan will be a legit Bundesliga player it seems soon (1-2.5 years) and he's registered good performances verses the likes of Mainz, Leverkusen, Dortmund, and Augsburg so there's definitely a very very solid foundation being laid at a position we really need some depth in (LB).
Apparently he played well. It might have been his best Bundesliga outing so far, according to the one Hoffenheim fan I actually know.
Toljan is still a regular with the German U20, so it's possible that he will travel together with the German A National Team to South Tirol, where the Germans prepare for the World Cup and the U20 will be their training and Test Match partners.
According to USAprospects on twitter - JK and co. are trying to get him on board and is "high on the radar"
What tweet are you looking at? There are a bunch of USAprospects tweets that talk about Klinsmann pursuing multiple dual nationals, but I don't see anything specific about Toljan.
Hoffenheim 2014/15 Season Preview ...Captain Andreas Beck, Bundesliga winner with Stuttgart in 2006/07, and 19-year old Jeremy Toljan are expected to be the regular full-backs. http://www.vavel.com/en/internation...3771-hoffenheim-14-15-bundesliga-preview.html
Random, but assuming I found his personal Facebook page, he says he's from New York, New York. Not exactly official American citizenship, but interesting nonetheless:
He went 90 for the reserve team this weekend. Hasn't played for the first team yet this season as far as I can see. http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/...hoffenheim-ii-5464_spvgg-neckarelz-10719.html
I guess the writing was on the wall when Hoffenheim signed LB specialist Kim Jin-Su, who would have started for Korea at the WC had he not dropped out of the squad due to injury. Still time for Toljan.
Jeremy Toljan, left back (Hoffenheim) Nationality: German-American Status: Germany youth international, last appearing for the U-20s in March; would have to file a one-time switch to play for the US What's his game? A freakish athlete, Toljan can play on both bookends of the back line. His name started coming up when the 20-year-old provided 10 encouraging Bundesliga games of left-back cover while the injury bug was chewing large holes in Hoffenheim's squad last season. However, there were a few rookie mistakes and the club bought South Korea left back hotshot Kim Jin-su this summer. Sprinkle in a string of preseason injuries and the youngster is now back with the reserves. Is Jurgen recruiting him? It seems unlikely considering Toljan has been comfy climbing his way through the Germany set-up, but the US staff has publicly admitted to keeping watch from afar. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...ng-out-dual-nationals-usmnt-ahead-russia-2018
