hahah i read a little of their forums too, it is surprising to see just how indifferent they are to him..some of it is probably a pride thing and defense mechanism since it's possible he'd play for canada. i don't think any of us are pretending he'd be anything less than a huge addition though. when was the last time canada had a borderline star from europe? never?

the health of hutchison is huge that can't be overshadowed, even by these two.

IF we get JDG2 there would be no doubt in my mind that we'll get Hoilett too. I honestly don't see us getting JDG2 without Hoilett anyways. For him to go through this process to regain his citizenship there has to be some real WC potential, and I'm sure Hoilett would be a big influence in JDG2's decision.

My point is, that if we don't get Hoilett it means that we're no further along than we ever were in recent times, and JDG2 isn't gonna go through the process just to play in 5 friendlies per year against 3rd rate nations, to lose out of WCQ before the hex, and to play in the biggest joke of any continental tournament every two years and lose before the semis.

With both players however, we're right up there with CR and Honduras, if not better. Our defence is already top 5 in CONCACAF, all we need are some quality attacking options.

A 4-2-3-1 with Jackson as the Striker, DeRo behind him, Hoilett on the left, and JDG2 on the right is pretty scary for CONCACAF standards.

I don't think that JDG is waiting on Hoilett's decision. Whatever Canada's prospects are (and I think that you are somewhat on the pessimistic side), having Hoilett doesn't change it all that dramatically.

You've got me all wrong, I'll clear it up.

First, I don't mean to say that JDG is waiting on Hoilett's decision, however I don't think he'll join without having a good idea as to whether Hoilett will play for us. Based on Julian DG's recent comments and the apparent Simeon Jackson talks with Hoilett it seems that Hoilett's being pursued actively by the players too and has communicated with Jonathan DG. I could see JDG2 joining first, but only if he really thinks Hoilett is coming too. So my opinion on the matter is that we'll get one of 3 things. Both, neither, or Hoilett only (in the case that it takes him even longer to decide and JDG2's interest fades).

Second, I'm not pessimistic. I think we'll get Hoilett, as I haven't been presented with anything major that suggests he'll play for Jamaica (his father's preference doesn't seem like a big factor) and he's way too far down the pecking order for England. I've also been one to defend this team throughout the recent group stage because of our defensive ability. If useless Lars Hirschfeld doesn't allow that terrible goal against St Lucia we'd have had 6 clean sheets. I like the defensive set up, and we should be playing Borjan, not Hirschfeld. Any pessimism I have related to the lack of finishing ability this team has, something I'm sure everyone here can pretty much agree with. Side not: I don't know what it is with me and supporting teams that can't finish  seems to be something that haunts Canada and Liverpool

Third, I think Hoilett's addition would make a big difference because of my second point. He's an excellent attacking player who can play as a winger or striker, and has scored some wonderful goals for Blackburn. he alone wouldn't solve it, but would help the finishing problem. JDG2 is a free kick specialist with a wonderful shot and terrific footballing sense as an attacking mid to create plays for other forwards...something that would boost Hoilett even more.

I dunno about you, but a midfield of JDG, Hutch, Simpson, JDG2, Hoilett sounds pretty damn scary to me. With guys like Johnson and DeRo coming off the bench (if DeRo's ego can handle it)

    fair points, cody.

it would be strange to think of canada's biggest issue as defensive midfield, and not scoring heh. borjan is number one i don't think his lack of call-ups in the last round is much to worry about. just a bit of team management imo. 1) hirschfeld or stamatopoulos will be much happier to sit on the bench now that they've had the chance to help the team into the next round 2) their playing time with the national team could be useful if they ever needed to be called upon in the next round.

I don't expect him to play for TC soon not because he doesn't want to, but because if he has to choose between regaining his Canadian citizenship and keeping his Dutch citizenship, he'll keep his Dutch citizenship. And I won't blame him for making that choice.

As I stated earlier, there is some leeway for the Dutch to allow him dual citizenship, I've read about a number of exemptions. If he can demonstrate one of them then he could regain his Canadian citizenship without renouncing his Dutch one.

    One possibility: marrying a Canadian.

Isn't citizenship and passport two different things? From what I've heard from the interviews with JDG & JDG2, he gave up his Canadian passport, not his citizenship. I'm pretty sure getting your passport is a heck of a lot faster than becoming a citizen.
In an interview he said "i don't have a Canadian passport anymore". He didn't say "I'm not a Canadian citizen"

  11. Are Canadian women cute:)

By the way, I read comments that he isnot in the Orange picture because he probably isnot good enough. I can say that that isnot the case. He is top quality midfield metal, but his bad and our luck is that we have at the moment a ridiculous row of quality midfielders ( and as it seems the next generation suddenly is knocking on the door too) and he was out for a few years due to his knee injury during which time his competitors could prove themselves. So there is no need for the Orange coach to give him a try.

The two bolded quotes above are contradicting each other. As you stated, the Netherlands' quality in the midfield is such that JDG2 is simply not good enough to compete. He will never receive a senior cap with the Dutch NT.

I'm pretty sure that he made the statement as a colloquialism as people often do.

If he was still a citizen and just needed his passport, with the expedite fee it would take only a week.

  15. No, the depth of the Dutch midfield players available with the quality to be in the Orange squad is ridiculous large and JdG is part of that. So no contradiction. Do not misjudge JdG, he is one of the coming top mid field players of the world. If he wasnot injured he already would be one.

Exactly. We don't send our lads to die on foreign shores for anything more than a heartfelt "thank you" and the opportunity to do the right thing.

Canada's Hart to meet with Jonathan de Guzman
Julian de Guzman reveals younger brother keen on being a Canuck
    Rudi Schuller MLSsoccer.com January 26, 2012

“Stephen Hart and [Canada assistant coach] Tony Fonseca are expected to visit him sometime this week,” the elder de Guzman said. “They’ll have some time to sit down and talk about what options or what possibilities or how they can work things out for him to be part of the national team.”

Possibly standing in the way of Jonathan de Guzman joining the Canadian set up is his Dutch citizenship, which he obtained as an 18-year-old. In order to further his career, the younger de Guzman moved to the Netherlands at age 12 and eventually moved up the ranks of the Feyenoord system, catching the eye of the Dutch youth national side.

To that end, Hart and the Canadian Soccer Association have been looking into the legalities of getting Jonathan back within the Canadian fold, a process that has been underway for several weeks.

“I was with my brother throughout the holidays and he’s still keen on being a part of the Canadian national team,” Julian said. “[The CSA is] sorting things out right now and hopefully sometime next week or hopefully next month we’ll see a final answer.”

There are two major hurdles, there's the Dutch government allowing JDG2 to be a dual citizen and then there's the Canadian government giving him back his citizenship. I'm sure that people who renounce their citizenship are not looked highly upon by the immigration department (although the Minister of Immigration I believe has the authority to grant it, so it may be a simple matter of the CSA lobbying the minister).

Considering that JDG2 was born in Canada, I don't understand how the government has any legal leg to stand on to refuse granting his citizenship back. The only hurdle that I see is on the Dutch side. If the Netherlands refuse to allow him to keep his Dutch citizenship if he gets his Canadian citizenship back, this won't happen.

I'm pretty sure that if you renounce your citizenship, your birthright goes with it.

I admit I'm not an expert, but I don't expect this to be an issue. He's not famous enough in Canada to be known by the Department of Immigration or the federal government to build up a grudge - and more importantly, he's not a convict like Black.

The short of it is, bringing him in would be an asset to this country, not a liability, so it would be incredible if his bid to get his citizenship back would be rejected.
